Born James Howard Thome on August 27, 1970, in Peoria, Illinois, Jim grew up in an athletic family with a strong softball background. He idolized Chicago Cubs' Dave Kingman and became an All-State athlete in both baseball and basketball during high school. His powerful swing attracted the attention of scouts while attending Illinois Central College, leading to his selection by the Cleveland Indians as a shortstop in the 1989 MLB Draft.
