Edward Augustine Walsh was born on May 14, 1881, in Plains Township, Pennsylvania, to Irish immigrant parents, as one of 13 children. His early years were spent working in the coal mines of Leren County, but a passion for the game led him to pursue a career in professional baseball. Walsh debuted in the minor leagues with the 1902 Meridan Silverites of the Connecticut State League before earning a major league contract with the Chicago White Sox in 1904.
