Unfortunately, the excessive workload took a toll on Walsh's arm, and by the 1913 season, his performance began to decline. Despite his hopes for a restful year, accidental overexertion during training caused lasting damage. The subsequent years saw him sidelined by injuries, and he played very few games over the next four seasons before being released by the White Sox in 1916.
Walsh attempted to revitalize his career with the Boston Braves but was released shortly after joining. When all was said and done, Walsh finished his career with a remarkable 1.82 ERA—still the lowest in baseball history—alongside 1,736 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.0.
