The increase in electric vehicle sales comes on the heels of a government decision to discontinue the environmental bonus for private EV purchases at the end of December 2023. This shift initially led to a drop in registrations, as consumers adjusted to the changes. However, as the year unfolded, EV sales began to stabilize at around 35,000 units monthly, indicating a recovery from the earlier slump.
In terms of market share, EVs represented 16.6% of all new car registrations in January, a figure that notably exceeds the 8.8% market share of electric vehicles in the United States for the same period. This disparity suggests that, without substantial subsidies, EV adoption in Germany has exhibited remarkable growth.
