Benny Binion’s upbringing was as rugged as the cowboy persona he later embraced. With a tumultuous childhood health-wise — often sick and considered unlikely to reach adulthood — formal schooling took a back seat in his early life. Binion’s education in the art of gambling commenced at around the age of 10 during business trips with his father, a horse trader. During these trips, Binion was exposed to informal betting games among traders, gradually honing his skills in gambling and negotiation.
