Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo will be sidelined through the next week due to a mild calf strain and will miss the NBA All-Star Game next Sunday, sources tell ESPN. Antetokounmpo, out since Feb. 2, is expected to return to action shortly after All-Star break.
BREAKING: The Jets informed Aaron Rodgers in a meeting last week that they will be moving on from him, per @ Jay Glazer. His time with the Jets is over.
Davante Adams looks to be following Rodgers out of the door.
I'm making yogurt... Do I know how to, no, did I search for instructions, yes, did I follow them? no.... so in a couple hours let's see how it turned out XD
ideally you have a government that sees self governance as a right, and only agrees on certain basic things. I think this is how the USA was supposed to work.
I wish we had just abolished slavery made women equal, returned some more land to natives and kept most things as states rights. Nobody thinks of the 50 states as 50 autonomous regions with a unifying constitution now….
in some ways though I think we do have a fluid blending of economic systems. We all share and we all earn and purchase. It depends how you see these terms.
I don’t usually get into debates about communism and capitalism because most people don’t agree on the definitions…honestly most people don’t even understand them. The misunderstandings people have are really incredible sometimes.
Sharing experience and interpretations with curious people (like you are doing) can be useful but arguing is a waste of energy
You're right on this one. I had to study deep about it before posting the initial thread. A d the feedback I have gotten from people here has even thought me way more now
I’ve had experience in both kinds of societies and I feel the stated ideology of institutions is very different, some family values are different, a few important things you never think about are different. The reality of most other things are the same.
If you have any questions about that I’d rather answer on discord tho 😜
In December 1978, the Soviet Union faced an unprecedented climate catastrophe that brought the nation to its knees. As temperatures plummeted to a shocking -73°F (-58 °C), entire cities lost power, heating systems failed, and millions of people struggled to survive. But behind this arctic nightmare lurked an even greater danger - a near-catastrophic incident at the Beloyarsk Nuclear Power Station that could have changed history forever.
The 1978 Ice Age: When All of Russia Froze to -73°F
Through personal memories and eyewitness accounts, this video reveals the forgotten story of the Soviet Union's deadliest winter. From students fighting for survival in the brutal cold to families huddling in frozen apartments, from desperate attempts to stay warm to neighbors helping each other through the crisis - these are the stories of ordinary people who lived through an extraordinary moment in history.

A chilling reminder of nature's power and humanity's resilience in the face of impossible odds.
The cold snap was so severe that it even reached as far as Germany, the brown coal froze in the GDR and almost the entire power supply collapsed as a result, north and east Germany (in the GDR and West-Germany) was in large regions completely cut off from the outside world. My home in the north-west was only really hit hard in the second cold spell in February 1979, the snowdrifts lasted until May according to my parents. My great uncle was a farmer, he had trouble milking the cows and had to pour all the milk away. Other farmers' cows froze to death in the barns. At least there was something positive for my parents, my brother was conceived during the first cold snap For us here, these are very unusual events because we are not used to it (temperatures to -30°C), for you it would be a normal winter period in Siberia, I didn't even know it was that bad in the Soviet Union, it must've been absolute horror Thank you for the exciting video, I learned so much new stuff!
In January 1977, my area in Virginia USA spent about 2.5 weeks with incredible cold: nighttime lows were -18 to -20F, and daytime HIGHS were only -5F. Normally, we don't even go below 0F for a low temperature. I'd thought that was nearly unbearable outdoors, but we still had heat, electricity, and water indoors. I can't imagine how Russians survived the brutal cold that you described so vividly with no resources unless they had gas stoves for a bit of heat. My heart goes out to the families who lost loved ones during that awful winter. And God bless that wonderful woman who opened her building to the cats and dogs who otherwise would have frozen to death. Thank you for such an informative video!
The Diocletian system arose in the middle of the third century when the political and military problems Rome was facing posed a significant threat to her stability. The new structure utilized a shallow “defense in depth” strategy to replace the massed force model. As in the Antonine system, there was no surplus of military power for offensive use or deterrent, but unlike its predecessor, the Diocletian system had no “surge” capability.
The concept of defense was one of containment. Because forces had to be put together ad hoc according to circumstances, penetrations were commonplace and the threat of Roman power was everywhere absent. Any diplomacy undertaken with external powers was local and dependent on the availability of forces. The outputs and inputs to the military system had finally come into balance and security was equal to the size of the force put to the task of maintaining it.
The most important accomplishment of the Lycurgan reforms was the creation of the Spartan Army, an instrument of power that held off political revolution in Sparta for 400 years. At the same time, the reforms created some behaviors which had a negative impact on the army and diminished its power to protect the Spartan people.
Before discussing the army, it is necessary for us to explain how the words Spartan and Lacedaemonian come into play here. Spartans were the people inhabiting the five villages of Sparta – Mesoa, Kynosaura, Pitane, Limnae, and Amyklai, while Lacedaemonian defines the physical area of Spartan control including Sparta, Messenia, and the Perioikoi Villages of the Central Peloponnese. Because the Spartan Army used hoplites from the Lacedaemonian territories, the word Lacedaemonian more accurately describes its composition.
The Spartan tactic of using territorial reinforcements was a necessity but at the same time a trap which limited the size of the army. Because the Perioikoi were more numerous, they offered a large auxiliary force, but their numbers in battle had to be limited by ratio to the number of Spartiates, otherwise the balance of the army’s power would be held by outsiders. This requirement led to the unfortunate consequence of a decrease in the size of the army as the number of available Spartiates declined.
Spartans had forty years of eligibility for service, from age twenty to sixty. To prepare for war, they chose a call up age limit based on the number of hoplites needed -- sometimes age forty-five, sometimes fifty, and in extreme cases, more.
As early as Platea, the Sparta’s ability to field adequate numbers of Homoioi was stretched relative to the Perioikoi. The Spartans selected a call up to age forty-five for that battle, while the Perioikoi had enough hoplites available to afford the luxury of selecting only elite troops. Since the Perioikoi did not attend the Agoge, they did not possess equivalent skill in battle, but were also not subject to the same cultural pressures as the Homoioi. They had their own professions and lived a “normal” life like other Greeks. During the centuries when the Spartan Army was the strongest in Greece, the Perioikoi contingent was never utilized to its capacity.
The Spartan Phalanx was built by aggregating small units into larger ones --the smallest unit being the Enomotia with a maximum of 40 men. Each Enomotia consisted of two Syssitia, the basic unit of the mess. The twenty men who dined every day together were considered a “band of brothers” who ate together, trained together, and went to war together. Each Enomotia was represented by all age classes required to be present in a specific deployment. For example, when the call up was to age forty-five, each Enomotia consisted of five hoplites between the age of 20 and 25, five between the age of 25 and 30, five between the ages of 30 and 35, five between the ages of 35 and 40, and five between the ages of 40 and 45, making a total of 25. In a call up to age 60, there would be 40 men for each Enomotia.
NY law firm CEO Kevin Colwell killed in upstate skiing mishap: 'An immense tragedy'
State police are investigating after upstate law firm founder Kevin Colwell was found “severely injured” at the Gore Mountain ski area and pronounced dead.
The founder and CEO of a prominent Capital District law firm was killed in a skiing mishap at an upstate ski mountain on Saturday, police and the firm said Sunday.
Kevin Colwell, 53, head of the Albany law offices of Colwell Law Group, died after being found severely injured near the Sagamore Trail at Gore Mountain around 11 a.m., state police said in a release.
Colwell was identified on Facebook by the firm he founded.
“This is an immense tragedy for all of us at the Colwell Law Group,” Jennifer Stevens, chief operating officer at Colwell, said in a statement. “Kevin built not just a business, but a family, and the loss of his presence is felt deeply by all who had the privilege of working wit him.”
Police said the injured Colwell was spotted on the slopes, and died despite life-saving efforts by bystanders and members of the ski patrol.
His law firm has been in practice for nearly 20 years around the state capital as well as in Western and Central New York, the law group’s statement said.
In a previous post (June 2009), I discussed Lycurgus and his influence over the development of the Spartan political system. I described him as a shadowy figure who may never have existed. Rather than speculate about Lycurgus as a person and his influence over the Spartan political system, I would like to focus now on the system itself, its development and the forces that pushed it forward.
The most cohesive story of that time was contained in Plutarch’s life of Lycurgus, which attributes the Spartan government to that great lawgiver. Many of his facts have been questioned and much may have come from Plato – a biased source writing centuries later – but still it’s a place to start.
Prior to the advent of its militaristic model Sparta, like many of the other Greek Poleis, was managed by an aristocratic faction. We talked previously about splinter experiments in new government, like the Basileus as a military leader, which failed to catch on. But at some point, possibly the mid-eight century B.C, the Spartan political system began to evolve in a unique direction. Was Lycurgus the prime mover? Maybe, but there were certainly forces at work moving the Spartans toward equality whether or not they were driven by a single individual.
The foundational step was the creation of the Council of Elders, which as Plato stated had the effect of “cooling the high fever or royalty” and since the Elders had equal vote with the kings, they could bring “caution and sobriety to their deliberations”. The Gerousia and was made up of thirty members including the two kings.
The second body of government was the Ecclesia or Assembly, made up of all members of the Spartan army (hoplites). These members were referred to as Homoioi. Remarkably, the Assembly was mandated by the Rhetra (pronouncement of the Oracle) of Lycurgus near the end of the 8th century B.C, making it the first citizen legislative body in history.
Plutarch tells us what happened next. “Even though these changes had the effect of mixing the several powers of the state, successor generations, seeing that the powers of the oligarchy were unimpaired, and that it was, as Plato calls it, full of life and vigor, placed as a curb to it the power of the Ephors. The first Ephors, of whom Elatus was one, were elected during the reign of Theopompus” circa 675 B.C. The five Ephors were administrators elected for one year who were granted power greater than the kings with regards to the management of Spartan society, although in military matters, the kings were supreme. Speculation is that the Ephors were originally part of the king’s staff, but spun off as a separate governmental unit to reduce royal authority.
According to our sources, thirty thousand lots were granted to the Perioeci (neighboring villages) and nine thousand (later twelve thousand) to Spartiates.
One wonders about the land distribution and it impetus. What factor would have caused the rich to share their land? While the formation of a Council of Elders and Assembly are logical, even inevitable, the redistribution of land is not. There answer of course is that the rich did not give up their land. The land distribution was public land similar to the Roman agar publicus. There was still private land held onto by the rich. Embedded in the land distribution somewhere is the relationship between Sparta and Messenia, the territory of fertile lands west of the Taygetos Mountains. See map below.
The military mindset of Sparta manifested itself in other more eccentric ways. The mess was an institutionalized meal ritual among Homoioi designed to create camaraderie between them . Each Spartiate ate his meals with the same men he fought beside in war and each man was required to contribute food to the mess on a monthly basis. It has been written that Lycurgus got the idea for the mess from a visit to Crete where he saw it in action, but Crete is not the only example of this ritual in antiquity.
So we see an evolved Spartan Republic, perhaps by 650 B.C, consisting of a balanced political system built to support a militaristic ideal.
So much of it was eccentric: the anachronistic twin royal houses that lived on past their time, the Ephors, commoners elected by the shouts of the populace, and the odd relationship between Sparta, the Perioikoi, and the Messenians. But still the power of Sparta survived for centuries until the its army became weak in battle. The end came in 371 B.C. when a Spartan army of only 800 Homoioi was utterly defeated at Leuctra.
Victory on the Peloponnesian War had been an illusion. The Spartans could not rule others because their eccentric system did not prepare them for the task. Thirty years later, Spartan power had ended.
MTA worker’s teeth knocked out by subway vagrant, leaving him afraid to return to work: ‘It’s crazy’
A city transit worker who was slugged in an unprovoked attack last month said it's gotten so scary in the subway system that he's afraid to return to work.
A 44-year-old Big Apple transit worker who had two of his teeth knocked out by a short-on-cash subway vagrant said Sunday that he’s now afraid to return to work.
The victim, whose name is being withheld by The Post, said he’s still laid up from his painful injuries.
“It’s crazy,” the victim said of the Jan. 17 attack. “The guy said he has money but his car was not working. So, I checked his card and the card only had 30 cents on it. I told him, ‘Sorry, you don’t have enough money.’ Then he suddenly punched me in the face and said, ‘Where did my money go?’
“Like in 10 seconds all this happened.”
The NYPD on Sunday released surveillance footage of the brute in the attack, which unfolded around 7 p.m. at the Herald Square/34th Street station in Manhattan. The attacker was still on the loose Sunday.
He has a beard and moustache, and wore a dark coat with a light green hoodie
The transit worker, who has only been on the job since late 2023 and has three young children, said he’s still out of work due to his injuries and is questioning whether it’s safe to go back.
“I’m very afraid,” he said. “My mouth is open right now. Two teeth are missing. It’s still bleeding, I have headaches. Sometimes I feel I should leave the job, that it’s not for me, because I have my family.
“For some reason he was so angry and he just punched my face and ran away.”
The victim was treated at Bellevue Hospital following the unprovoked attack.
The city subways have seen a recent spike in violence, despite an overall drop in transit crime.
Authorities: Remains of All Killed in Alaska Plane Crash Recovered
The Remains of All 10 People Killed in Alaska Plane Crash Have Been Recovered, Authorities Say
The Nome Volunteer Fire Department made the announcement on its Facebook page Saturday afternoon. Recovery crews had been racing to recover the bodies before a winter storm was expected to hit the region.
“All ten individuals aboard the Bering Air plane have been officially brought home,” the fire department wrote in the social media post at about 3 p.m.
Crews were still working on recovering the aircraft, the fire department said.
The Bering Air single-engine turboprop plane was traveling from Unalakleet to the hub community of Nome when it disappeared Thursday afternoon. It was found the next day after an extensive search with all nine passengers and the pilot dead, making it one of the deadliest plane crashes in the state in 25 years.
The aircraft is on an ice floe that is drifting about 5 miles (8 kilometers) a day, creating difficult conditions for recovery crews, said National Transportation Safety Board chair Jennifer Homendy during a press conference Saturday afternoon.
“Please know that we'll work diligently to determine how this happened with the ultimate goal of improving safety in Alaska and across the United States,” said Homendy.
"The loss of these two incredible individuals and everyone else on board the plane will be felt all over Alaska,” David Beveridge, vice president of environmental health and engineering for the organization, said in a statement.
The pilot, 34-year-old Chad Antill of Nome, was also killed. The other victims ranged in age from 30 to 58 years old.
The flight was a regularly scheduled commuter trip, according to Lt. Ben Endres of the Alaska State Troopers.
A photo provided by the Coast Guard showed the plane’s splintered body and debris lying on the sea ice. Two people in brightly colored emergency gear circled the wreckage.
“It’s hard to accept the reality of our loss,” U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski said during an evening news conference.
Radar forensic data provided by the U.S. Civil Air Patrol indicated that about 3:18 p.m., the plane had “some kind of event which caused them to experience a rapid loss in elevation and a rapid loss in speed,” Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Benjamin McIntyre-Coble said. “What that event is, I can't speculate to.”
McIntyre-Coble said he was unaware of any distress signals from the aircraft. Planes carry an emergency locating transmitter. If exposed to seawater, the device sends a signal to a satellite, which then relays that message back to the Coast Guard to indicate an aircraft may be in distress. No such messages were received by the Coast Guard, he said.
Rescuers were searching the aircraft’s last known location by helicopter when the wreckage was spotted, said Mike Salerno, a spokesperson for the U.S. Coast Guard. Two rescue swimmers were lowered to investigate.
“Our hearts are heavy with grief as we process this heartbreaking news,” Bering Air wrote in a statement on its website. “At this time, our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those affected by this tragedy."
A phone line was set up to give updates and emotional support to people who had loved ones on board, Bering Air said. The company asked for privacy for everyone involved, and said it was committed to supporting authorities.
Unalakleet is a community of about 690 people about 150 miles (about 240 kilometers) southeast of Nome and 395 miles (about 640 kilometers) northwest of Anchorage. The village is on the Iditarod trail, route of the world's most famous sled dog race, during which mushers and their teams must cross the frozen Norton Sound.
Nome, a Gold Rush town, is just south of the Arctic Circle and is known as the ending point of the 1,000-mile Iditarod. The city said prayer vigils would be held Friday for those on board the plane, friends and family and those involved in search efforts.
Fast Moving Storms Leaves Fluffy Piles of Snow Across New England
New Englanders stocked up on both Super Bowl snacks and staples like bread and milk this weekend ahead of a fast-moving storm that dropped up to a foot of light, fluffy snow.
The parking lot was packed and the checkout lines were long at a Market Basket grocery store in Epping, New Hampshire, on Saturday, WMUR-TV reported. None of the shoppers seemed to panic about the storm, which cleared out by Sunday morning well ahead of kickoff time.
Bob Oravec, lead forecaster with the National Weather Service, said the storm moved from the Great Lakes into the Northeast, with accumulated totals of 6 to 12 inches in upstate New York and New England and 3-5 inches around Boston and New York City. While northern areas enjoyed the powder, the snowfall in New York City was wet and dense, clogging storm drains and creating ponds of water at sidewalk intersections in Northern Manhattan.
Airports in Boston and New York saw increased flight delays and cancelations Sunday.
Meanwhile, the weather service issued freeze warnings for parts of south central California and the San Francisco area on Sunday, cautioning that below-freezing temperatures could kill crops, damage unprotected outdoor plumbing and put vulnerable populations at risk of hypothermia.
'Finally happening:' House Republicans rally behind Elon Musk's efficiency rampage
Republican lawmakers for years have preached fiscal responsibility and vowed to curb wanton federal spending, but Congress kept racking up deficits and the national debt has now ballooned to more than $36 trillion.
Enter Elon Musk, tech billionaire and leader of President Trump’s charge to downsize the federal government.
Mr. Cloud is a member of the debt-hawk-filled House Freedom Caucus and the House’s new DOGE subcommittee. He said that while Congress has “long had the authority to rein in the government spending,” sometimes they didn’t know where to look.
The other side of the story, he said, was that bureaucrats have done everything they can to “hide, to obfuscate, to keep Congress from knowing the information for us to know where the money is actually going.”
“He’s been able to bring some technology tools to the table that have provided transparency to where we and the American people are seeing where things were going,” Mr. Cloud said.
Mr. Musk’s efforts have been met with criticism, both for their forcefulness and over their legality, particularly DOGE’s access to federal payment systems at the Treasury Department and moves to dismantle the U.S. Agency for International Development.
Congressional Republicans welcome Mr. Musk’s involvement and see his work opening up new, more viable pathways to slashing federal spending.
“I’m at the point where I’m just glad it’s finally happening,” Rep. Aaron Bean, Florida Republican, said.
Rep. John Rutherford, Florida Republican, said that paradigm shift among his colleagues stemmed not so much from DOGE or the new administration, but from voters.
“I think we’ve always known where the cuts needed to be, it was having the political will to do it,” he said. “And now that the members have the public behind them, I think they’re much more inclined to step out there and make those cuts.”
Trump also reaffirmed that he would announce “reciprocal tariffs” -“probably Tuesday or Wednesday” - meaning that the U.S. would impose import duties on products in cases where another country has levied duties on U.S. goods.
“If they are charging us 130% and we’re charging them nothing, it’s not going to stay that way,” he told reporters.
“We are flying right over it right now,” Mr. Trump said, sitting aboard Air Force One with a pen in his hand. “So we thought this would be appropriate.”
Mr. Trump said the signing event was “even bigger than the Super Bowl” and that most everyone accepted his change.
The pilot then declared on the loudspeaker that “Air Force One is currently in international waters, for the first time in history, flying over the recently renamed Gulf of America.”
The US China Trade War has begun and although Trump has passed 10% tariffs on China the simple reality is China is well prepared to for this battle. China has retaliated against US tariffs and started their own round of sanctions. What happens next in the US China Trade War? Let's break it down in today's video!
Judges emerge as major roadblock to Trump's agenda
President Trump emerged victorious in a D.C. courtroom when a judge shot down an attempt by the ACLU to restart a Biden-era "parole" program for unauthorized migrants.
President Trump emerged victorious in a D.C. courtroom when a judge shot down an attempt by the ACLU to restart a Biden-era “parole” program for unauthorized migrants.
But that was a lonely win in what has otherwise been a total legal wipeout for Mr. Trump, who has seen federal judges leap to block his aggressive agenda.
“Trump hasn’t won in court even once since taking office,” said Democracy Docket, a left-leaning legal tip sheet that cheered the president’s shortfalls.
“It has become ever more apparent that to our president the rule of law is but an impediment to his policy goals,” said U.S. District Judge John C. Coughenour. “The rule of law is, according to him, something to navigate around or simply ignore, whether that be for political or personal gain.”
Other judges were less scolding in their rulings, characterizing them as short-term pauses to give the legal cases a chance to develop without unleashing any genies that would be tough to put back in bottles.
In the Trump spending pause cases, judges picked by Presidents Barack Obama and Joseph R. Biden ruled against Mr. Trump. And a Clinton appointee was the one who iced the federal worker buyout.
The FBI names were paused by a Biden appointee, and the USAID action is being handled by a judge Mr. Trump appointed in his first term.
“It’s still early days and the challengers are selecting friendly jurisdictions in which to file their suits,” said Ilya Shapiro, director of constitutional studies at the Manhattan Institute.
Mr. Trump nixed the program and canceled all pending appointments when he took office.
Led by the American Civil Liberties Union, the immigration groups argued the cancelations left migrants stranded in Mexico, where they faced violence and potential persecution.
But Judge Rudolph Contreras, an Obama appointee to the federal district court in the District of Columbia, said courts have no power to order the government to grant parole in specific cases.
“No formal claim or request for prize money was made by the University to Odds On in this matter,” the company said. “Odds On was not involved in the initial invalidation of the contest win and only became aware of the University’s decision to not pay the contestant through media coverage.”
Josh Schreiber, who identified himself as a UMass women’s basketball broadcaster and Lee’s best friend, said the insurance company told Lee he wouldn’t get the prize but offered a package that included tickets, gift cards and UMass swag. On Friday morning, UMass athletic director Ryan Bamford said Lee would get his money - one way or the other.
“For all those wondering, we’re working on getting $10K to Noah,” Bamford posted on X. “If we can’t get to a good result via the insurance company, we will pay him directly. We appreciate his support of @UMassAthletics & want to reward his fun accomplishment the other night at our @UMassWBB game.”
Among those coming to Lee’s defense was men’s basketball coach Frank Martin, who reached out to Lee through Schreiber on Thursday. He later retweeted Bamford’s decision.
The bomber deployments “demonstrate lethality and interoperability in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific and enhance the readiness and training necessary to respond to any contingency or challenge,” Cmdr. Comer told The Washington Times in a statement.
The joint flights also showed increased coordination between the U.S. and Philippines forces, he said.
“This exercise demonstrates the strong relationship between the Armed Force of the Philippines and IndoPacom as well as our collective commitment to maintaining regional security and stability,” Cmdr. Comer said. “Evaluating readiness and forward positioning of bombers ensures the Department of Defense can maintain operational and support capabilities to meet our security obligations.”
The flights and drills also suggest the administration is not backing off U.S. policies of confronting China or that Mr. Trump is becoming more accommodating to China in the region than his predecessor.
Politico reported in a column this week that Mr. Trump has begun his second term with conciliatory policies toward Beijing, including delaying a ban on TikTok, inviting President Xi Jinping to his inauguration, and giving China’s communist regime “a chance to strengthen itself just as it was facing economic headwinds.”
Officials from the Philippines said the overflight took place near the disputed Scarborough Shoal, where China’s naval and maritime militia forces have been conducting provocative maneuvers against Philippines vessels seeking to resupply a grounded navy ship on the shoal.
The area was in the west Philippines Sea and claimed as part of Manila’s exclusive economic zone. The South China Sea is a strategic waterway that sees more than $3 trillion annually in shipping.
The B-1B bombers that conducted the operation were non-nuclear variants that can carry a range of missiles and bombs, including the Joint Standoff Weapon and Long Range Anti-Ship Missile. They also can deliver the Joint Direct Attack Munition, a guided aerial bomb.
Donald Trump says Justin Trudeau is right, I do want Canada to be 51st state
President Trump said Sunday he is serious about making Canada the nation's 51st state.
In a pre-Super Bowl interview on Fox, Mr. Trump said that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was telling the truth when he told business officials that his talk of making Canada the 51st state is “a real thing.”
“Yes, it is,” Mr. Trump said. “I think Canada would be much better off being a 51st state because we lose $200 billion a year with Canada and I am not going to let that happen.”
Mr. Trump has maintained that Canada is ripping off the United States on trade, arguing Americans are “subsidizing” their neighbor to the north.
“Now, if they are 51st state, I don’t mind doing it,” he said.

White House flags nearly $200 million in questionable spending by USAID
The Trump administration has flagged nearly $200 million in questionable spending by the U.S. Agency for International Development, which Elon Musk and his team have put in their crosshairs for cutting alleged waste and abuse.
Among the most stunning revelations from a White House list of questionable spending was nearly $10 million USAID spent on meals that went to al Qaeda-funded terrorist groups.
Then there was the roughly $75 million USAID spent on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in foreign countries.
• $1.5 million to advance “diversity, equity and inclusion” in Serbian workplaces.
USAID also spent millions to promote transgenderism through various media outlets including using $47,000 of taxpayer funds to produce a transgender opera in Colombia, $32,000 for a transgender opera in Columbia, $70,000 for a “DEI-themed musical” in Ireland and $2 million for a “transgender comic book in Peru.”
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt called out the USAID for spending taxpayer dollars on “crap.”
She said Democrats who are protesting the administration’s plan to fold USAID into the State Department should be focused on making sure Americans benefit when Uncle Sam doles out their tax dollars.
“Democrats are outraged that the American people want their tax dollars going to good uses, not stuff like this but then they’re very quiet about the fact that there are still North Carolinians and people in California who have lost everything, but in the last four years, the federal government did nothing to help them,” she said of the two states affected by natural disasters.
Also included on the list was $6 million approved by USAID to promote tourism in Egypt, a move that was authorized by the first Trump administration.
The White House has not detailed a vision for the future of the foreign aid agency.
President Trump decided to end the agency’s autonomy and make it part of the State Department, but how that will work or even if it will retain the USAID name remains to be seen.
All USAID programs have been halted and its staff around the world have been placed on administrative leave. Mr. Trump said that he will decide the future of the agency later.
“It’s been run by a bunch of radical lunatics and we’re getting them out. USAID, run by radical lunatics, and we’re getting them out, and then we’ll make a decision,” he said.
USAID’s offices have been closed to workers, a move that was protested on Monday by both its employees and Democratic lawmakers. The Democrats said shuttering the agency was illegal and unconstitutional. They argued that it was created by an act of Congress so the president can’t just get rid of it through executive fiat.
Sen. Chris Van Hollen, Maryland Democrat, said shuttering USAID “is essentially putting lives at risk around the world.”

USAID is supposed to send money and other resources to parts of the world affected by conflict and poverty. Its programs range from providing relief for refugees fleeing natural disasters and war to literacy campaigns in the Middle East to disease vaccination initiatives and drought-resistant seeds to African farmers.

Denver-area authorities said they shot and killed an armed man late Saturday near a family entertainment venue after a woman inside the business was wounded in a separate shooting.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were responding to a shooting at the venue in Highlands Ranch when they encountered a man wielding a pistol in the parking lot.
Police said the man, who was not identified, was walking between cars and refusing the deputy’s commands to drop his weapon moments before the officer opened fire.
“The male turned toward the deputy, and at that time he was shot,” Sheriff Darren Weekly said early Sunday in a video statement about the fatal shooting.

The best way to understand the system is that it is designed for complaint minimization: people don’t complain if they receive money, but do complain loudly (especially fraudsters!) if they don’t receive money.

ideally you have a government that sees self governance as a right, and only agrees on certain basic things. I think this is how the USA was supposed to work.
I wish we had just abolished slavery made women equal, returned some more land to natives and kept most things as states rights. Nobody thinks of the 50 states as 50 autonomous regions with a unifying constitution now….
This makes a lot of sense.
in some ways though I think we do have a fluid blending of economic systems.

Discover:
• How an unusual weather pattern turned into a national emergency
• The devastating impact on infrastructure and daily life
• Personal stories of survival and human kindness
• The hidden nuclear crisis that almost led to disaster
• How this event compares to today's changing climate

!summarize #russellbrand #usaid #government

!summarize #usaid #gamers #toxic #journalism #government

!summarize #Target #dei #business #retail #money
!summarize #Titanic #shipwreck #ocean #history #lost

Mr. Trump gushed, “He did that well.”

The agency also pays to improve sanitation systems in India and teach entrepreneurial skills in Guatemala as well as provide low-interest loans to families in Africa.
Deputy fatally shoots armed man outside family entertainment venue near Denver
