Despite having a rough idea of where the Titanic had sunk, the technology of the early 1900s was inadequate for precise underwater exploration. The first serious search didn’t occur until 1953, led by Risden Beasley. Utilizing a loud explosive device to send shockwaves into the water, he hoped to detect the ship's remains. Nonetheless, his efforts ended fruitlessly.

Two decades later, oceanographer Robert Ballard made more determined attempts. In 1977, his initial expedition with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution aimed at mapping the ocean floor as part of a technology test but resulted in a broken drill pipe, thwarting his efforts yet again.
