One of the hallmark luxuries of the 1960s was, undoubtedly, central air conditioning. At a time when many households relied on fans or window units, having central air was synonymous with sophistication. The feeling of entering a cool home on a scorching day was exhilarating, reinforcing the notion that the family could afford such a significant investment. The appearance of work trucks in front of a house would spark neighborhood speculation about how such luxuries were funded. Further, the financial burden of high utility bills from running central air indicated that these families were indeed living the high life.
