Breno’s unnerving investigation was only one part of a larger exploration. In the 1940s, American scientists Robert Cornish and Joseph Karft endeavored to resurrect the dead. Cornish’s experiments involved repeatedly killing and reviving dogs with a combination of adrenaline, anti-coagulants, and artificial respiration. The results were distressing; some dogs were indeed revived, but many emerged brain-damaged and barely functional. Cornish's obsession led him to seek permission to test his methods on a death row inmate, a request that was justifiably denied.
