This economic stagnation within Shansi has manifested in declining coal production and diminished manufacturing output. Foxconn, a major employer, has relocated portions of its production overseas, leading to a sharp drop in cell phone production. The consequence of such industrial imbalance has been a severe shortage of job opportunities, compounded by a decreasing quality of education, which has resulted in massive population outflows. Between 2010 and 2023, Shansi lost approximately one million residents, further exemplifying the ongoing economic crisis.
