As his father left the family when Carl was around seven or eight, his criminal activity escalated, culminating in multiple arrests for being drunk and disorderly. By 1903, he was sent to the Minnesota State Training School—a juvenile detention center—where he experienced beatings and assaults, fostering his desire for revenge. His early acts of violence included burning down a building while incarcerated.
His life of crime continued with theft, burglary, and even an assassination attempt on a teacher. By the age of 13, he was evading authorities and had already developed a criminal record.
