Between the ages of sixteen and thirty-nine, Carl Panzram would accumulate an extensive criminal history. After various juvenile delinquency incidents, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, only to be court-martialed shortly thereafter for theft. His time in Fort Leavenworth gave him the grim outlook that "anything good left in him was crushed" during his imprisonment.

Following his release, he traversed the country—committing burglaries, assaults, and murders in numerous states. Panzram’s method showed both skill in evasion and an alarming lack of remorse; he often used aliases, allowing him to escape serious consequences.
