In the elections held recently, the traditional center-right party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), emerged as the largest party with just over 28% of the vote. However, this represents one of their worst performances since World War II. The AfD, on the other hand, secured a remarkable 21% of the vote, effectively doubling its support since its initial entrance into Germany's Bundestag in 2017.
The results for other parties were stark. The left-wing Social Democrats (SPD), who were the ruling party prior to this election, saw their support plummet to 16%. Additionally, their coalition partners, the Greens, suffered a similar fate, dropping to just 11%. This election has thus marked the beginning of a significant shift in political allegiance among the German electorate.
