How I Got Monetized on YouTube: My Journey to the Partner Program

In this article, I will walk you through my journey of how I successfully monetized my YouTube channel. After dedicating around four years to creating content, I finally achieved my goal of joining the YouTube Partner Program. The process has been a mix of trials, tribulations, and valuable lessons that every aspiring YouTuber should consider.

Understanding the Monetization Requirements

Part 2/8:

To become monetized on YouTube, there are specific requirements that one must meet: 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours. While this may sound daunting, it is primarily about how many people watch your videos or live streams. For instance, if a live stream has 100 viewers watching for 10 minutes, you would accumulate a total of 1,000 watch minutes, translating into watch hours when divided accordingly.

My Key to Success: Live Streaming

Part 3/8:

One of the crucial elements that led to my monetization was my focus on live streaming, especially in the gaming niche. While I also posted regular videos, it was primarily my live streams that accumulated the necessary hours to hit that 4,000 mark. I discovered that gaming streams were a great way to attract viewers, particularly during the peak of popular games like “Fall Guys.”

For example, one of my live streams garnered over 2,000 views, accumulating an impressive 241 watch hours. The key takeaway here is that the more engaging your content is, the more likely you are to retain viewers for longer durations, ultimately boosting your watch time and subscriber count.

Analyzing My Channel's Growth

Part 4/8:

Through consistent gaming content, I observed my subscriber count steadily increasing. From around 1668 subscribers — many of whom were drawn in by my gaming montages and live streams — I realized how pivotal live streaming was to my growth. Some of my best streams received upwards of 4,000 views, leading to significant watch hours.

By showcasing live gameplay and engaging with my audience, I created a sense of community that encouraged viewers to keep coming back. It’s essential to analyze your analytics carefully; each stream contributes significantly to your journey toward monetization.

The Downside: My Demonetization Experience

Part 5/8:

Despite my progress, I faced obstacles along the way. Early in my YouTube career, I was demonetized due to posting reused content. I learned the hard way that simply reposting TikTok videos without modification could lead to dire consequences. Thankfully, after contacting YouTube’s support and adhering to their guidelines, I was able to regain my monetization status.

This experience taught me the importance of originality in content creation. I shifted my focus back to creating unique content that resonated with my audience, which played a pivotal role in my return to the platform.

Understanding Revenue and Earnings

Part 6/8:

As I became more familiar with the YouTube ecosystem, I noticed that monetization does not equate to substantial earnings initially. Throughout my journey, I’ve garnered a total of $317 in revenue, which, while not a fortune, reflects the income potential available when combining different types of content. Notably, I learned how varying content formats, such as shorts and live streams, would earn different rates based on engagement.

For instance, while my long videos yield a higher RPM (Revenue Per Mille) due to ads, my short videos received significantly less. Yet, it’s crucial for content creators to remain aware of the various revenue streams available on the platform, including ad revenue, memberships, and super chats, which allow for additional income opportunities.

Part 7/8:

Best Practices for Aspiring YouTubers

As you embark on your journey in content creation, remember these key strategies:

  1. Choose a Niche: Select a niche that resonates with you and is also in demand. I found success in gaming, but you can explore various genres as long as you're passionate about them.

  2. Consistency is Key: Regularly upload content and strive to engage your audience. Whether through structured live streams or edited videos, consistency helps build an audience over time.

  3. Engage with Your Audience: Ask for feedback, respond to comments, and create community posts to build a loyal fan base.

  4. Analyze Your Metrics: Regularly check your analytics to understand what works and what doesn’t. This data can help you pivot your content strategy effectively.

Part 8/8:

  1. Avoid Reused Content: Originality is crucial for success on YouTube. Always aim to create your own unique content.

Conclusion

Reaching monetization on YouTube can be a rewarding yet challenging journey. My experience has taught me valuable lessons—primarily the importance of persistence, originality, and understanding the platform's requirements. As I transition back to producing more gaming content along with other diverse topics, I remain excited about the potential of sharing my journey and experiences with a growing audience.
