H̶a̶n̶s̶ Hive, are we the baddies?

in LeoFinance2 years ago

I'm gonna tell you, I'm freaking mad, man.

This is not a rant, or at least I'm not writing this in order to throw punches at anyone specific or to stir the pot - we know it stirs itself every now and then, no need to add anything to the stove.

This post is intended to open the eyes of more than a few members of the Hive community that have an X (Twitter) account and use that account and the #hive tag to promote their content in this platform.

Have you ever thought that if you are going to use a web2 platform that is a direct competitor of Hive - at a bigger scale, their 450M users dwarf our hilariously weak 11k users - in terms of community building, perhaps you should use it to bring an audience to Hive, instead of using it selfishly to promote your own content, looking to get a few more cents of rewards in the social side of our blockchain?

Yep, I think we are the baddies.

I think we, as a community, are not leveraging X the proper way. It's nobodies fault, in the end nobody has taught us how to properly use X to bring more people into Hive, we just know it's a good place to shill our miscellaneous posts, use the #hive tag so that the very same community that roams in here can ignore our posts in a second platform, and hope and pray that a whale - who doesn't browse X - spares some votes our way.

Best case scenario, we get a few more cents, worst case scenario, we get deboosted and algorithm-hated because we only talk about Hive and we only share links that takes us away from X, which is something Elon hates as of late and penalizes.

I mean think about it, if you were a crypto investor or a content creator looking for a new home for your money or your content, and you heard about Hive somewhere, and then you go browse the #hive tag, only to find a spamfest of a feed that 99% looks like this, would you understand what the social side of Hive is, or would you have the time and drive to scroll endlessly and see if you find a website or an actual link that helps you understand the ecosystem?

Look at this:

Accounts are censored because I don't want to out anyone, this is just to give a quick example.

Stuff like this is worhless.

Think about it. This is not adding anything to your value as a content creator, and it is actually hurting Hive's visibility and perception to the outside creators and investors.

If we are going to use X to build a brand and get more impression because we want more upvotes, we should change the strategy. If we are going to use X to promote Hive, then we should focus on the actual promotion of the ecosystem, not on our post promotion.

I will be posting the most freaking thorough guide on how to build a brand on X, how to use the algorithm in our favor, and how to actually grow an audience there and use that in Hive's benefit, because God knows we need to grow our user base one way or another or the next bulls are going to eat us alive.

If you want me to tag you in that post, drop a comment here saying so.

I think the problem is not that I "Have you ever thought that if you are going to use a web2 platform that is a direct competitor of Hive".

I created my Twitter account (Yes, it was Twitter then) but never used it, because I didn't like it after trying it.

But Hive started a campaign: "Promote your content on Twitter and you will be rewarded!", because it was supposed to be suitable for Hive. And they created a whole program for that, and created a token, and Peakd included Twitter's bird in your profile. A lot of things seemed to me absurd, but they were supposed to be good for Hive.

So, I (and a lot of people) started to promote our posts there. Although the application that checked for the #posh tag on Twitter stopped working, I kept sharing there my posts, because "it's good for Hive"!!!

I fully support your opinion and your point of view. My comment is not against it, but against doing things wrong. And now I'm sure we were doing things wrong. We have to stop promoting other social networks and pushing our people to publish there.

I have little time, so I'm not sure if I can take an active role there, but by now I'll stop promoting my posts there unless they can be interesting to non-hive users!

The posh strategy was amazing with the old algorithm, but since so many recent changes it's not working anymore :(

Thanks for your comment man!

I love it when people say the truth even though it might hurt someone's feelings. Indeed a lot of persons promote their post on x just so they could be lucky with votes using the #hive tag not caring what they are even sharing.

I've done that before but then I realized that it was somehow to just share anything and use the #hive and ever since then I try to avoid sharing anything on x that does not really speak about hive.

I'd be looking forward to reading how I can use x better to promote hive right.

I don't understand how using the #hive tag on X (Twitter) to share Hive related content may not be beneficial? What would be the right way to do it? If I want to promote the post to any user on the platform because I find it interesting, and I want it to be known that it is hive content, then how should I do it?

I would like to be tagged in your next post on that. Please, I would like to know how to properly promote Hive even through my content on X (Twitter). I used to think that promoting our posts and using other common tags related to the content aside #hive will also work well in bringing people here when they click on any of the tags.

No worries, we don't know how to do outreach because we've never been taught to. I'll add you to the mention list. Thanks for your comment

Thank you 😊 I will be looking forward to it.

I love your emphasis on the need for a more strategic approach to using external platforms to promote Hive, rather than simply seeking personal rewards because this will make hive go far and more popular on the social media platform.

We have 174 frontends to coordinate, rally and follow a common strategy, but that would require people to stop looking out for their post rewards and do something for the community without getting any tangible benefit. I do believe there's a lot of people who want hive to thrive, hopefully they'll jump on board.

Yeah, you are right ther are truly different people with different goals but I believe things are changing with time..

How to actually bring in users and potential investors without making it look like some sketchy pyramid scheme 🤔

Easy, don't mention the money, sell the user experience and the digital identity concept, then throw in the monetization, and only then mention the tech.

I think the approach should be promoting the apps, games and the things that are developed on hive to be promoted. That way the Hive chain would automatically gets bumped to the mainstream. If we try to play comparison card, twitter/X public would burry us as there are paid promoters of other chains already.

In fairness to them, the self promotion nonsense is common blogging advice.

And I think most people follow common blogging advice incorrectly.

Yep, the problem is not the advice, but that people fit that advice into what they want it to be and then tell themselves they are doing everything right when in reality, they are doing everything wrong xD

I've been working on growing a presence on X myself and have been trying out a couple of different strategies myself. Would love to cross promote hive as I work on my own projects as well. These are my current stats.

I noticed that the idea of promoting our personal posts on X hasn't been an effective method of inviting people to hive and these days I only share hive promoting contents on my x account.

I'm looking forward to learning more from you on what better strategy to promote hive on web2

It isn't, and the algorithm ends up hiding your account if you only promote links that take users out of X. There are better strategies, way better.

The thing about decentralized systems is that we can't control what people do.
We have to go into it knowing for a fact that most people are going to act selfishly.
This is not a failure of the individual.
Holding the individual accountable will not work, nor is it justified.
This is a failure of the Hive network itself.
Hive simply does not have the proper infrastructure that allows users to generate maximum value.
Certainly you'd like to rectify this and I'm interested to see what you come up with.

Exactly, it's on hive, not us.

Hardfork rewards and allocate some to traffic generators and not just people with connections in here, and you'll see how this behavior in web2 changes in a glimpse.

I'll tag you in that post fren, thanks for the comment.

I'm not really tweeting these days, but I'll retweet those that promote the platform and events around Hive. We need to sell it as a better place to post. Sharing posts is not ideal as we mostly do not have the quality to draw in outsiders.

Yeah man, doing your part is more than enough, no matter how little or big your help is.

Although, replies are the new retweet, the X algorithm loves replies, a reply boosts a post around 30x more than what a like can achieve, and around 13x more than what a retweet can achieve.

So my 2c would be to reply more and like less, takes a bit more time, but helps the accounts a fuckton more.

I'll bear that in mind. We need the visibility.
