Volunteer tells what it was like to spend a year in a Mars simulation
The crew of four volunteers spent more than 300 days in Mars Dune Alpha, a habitat created by 3D printing. The site was made to replicate the conditions and challenges that astronauts will encounter when they arrive on Mars in a few decades, such as communication delays, equipment failures and more.
During their stay, Selariu and his colleagues needed to collect and analyze geological samples, used drones and rovers and even used modified spacesuits to simulate an expedition to the Red Planet. “The amount of data that will come out of the CHAPEA study will be incredible,” he commented.
