Great initiative! It makes much sense to do it now, after all the experience you've harvested in this ecosystem, just like it'd 10x more relevant for Laws or Economics College students to work on a Thesis a couple of years AFTER College :)

IOTA, is what happens when there is no decentralization, they can print as many tokens as they want or manipulate the price and capitalization as they wish

From what I read, one of the changes is that they will move to an inflationary system for 4 years, to feed a fund that will be used to further decentralize IOTA. I don't know much about this, but it sounds pretty illogical.

Could there be a working group set up between IOTA pro-decentralization Community members/devs and the NANO Community or Team? Afaik, NANO is a quite successful DAG based project, and they could probably help, at least technically
It's supposed to be the case, the same way NANO & BANANO are (all of them are running on a DAG technology). But I haven't checked their code, or energy consumption :-)
Good point there that truly decentralized platforms are in better position during a prolonged bear market and more safe from all sorts of exits. Some game theoretics in there
