Hello Everyone,
This is an extra edition of the Saturday Savers Club to launch September No Buy Month. If you'd like to know more about Saturday Savers Club, scroll down to see the information section at the bottom and all our registered savers.
September is a really great month for a No-Buy. In the Northern hemisphere the summer holidays are over, we're back to work, school and routine. In the Southern hemisphere we're looking forward to longer days.
Strictly speaking, No-Buy is not literally about buying nothing. It is about reviewing your spending and seeing where changes can be made. In the UK, where I'm based, we've seen large price fluctuations in housing, utilities, food and transport. In addition, if it's been a while since you reviewed your regular outgoings, this might be the time to check what's going on and whether you can get any better deals.
I came across the No Buy idea through a writer called Cinzia Du Bois. Cinzia talked about how she had always said that she could never save as she was on a minimum wage. One year, she earned more, but still didn't have any savings at the end of it. That caused her to wonder what was going on ...
I know my spending has got out of sync due to changes in mortgage rates and energy prices. I'm also making some major life changes including having work done on my house. And I'm involved in some research about healthy aging and my eating habits will be changing over the next few months. There has been so much going on that it has been difficult to stay on top of everything - time for a reset!
What is No-Buy Month?
A no-buy month is a month when you set your self some intentional rules about what you are and are not going to buy. You decide your budget and what is permissible within your rules:
Last time we did a no-buy, one person had a challenge about buying things for the new school year. That's okay: build those known expenses into your rules and allowed expenses for the month.
Of course, you continue to pay essential expenditure like housing costs, but you may want to use the month to review household bills and whether you can get a better deal. You consider whether there is food you can use up from your store cupboard, freezer and garden. Last but not least, you think about what intentional spending you want to include - maybe birthday presents, or social events with friends.
No Buy Rules September 2023
Here's the set of rules that @sally-saver will be following for September
ALLOWED EXPENSES
Food - but aiming to finish up packets, tins and jars.
Essential toiletries and housekeeping replacements.
Essential repairs or replacements.
1 coffee or meal with friends or family per week.
Voices in Art Class subscription.
Rowan September Connect Workshops.
Travel or fuel.NO-NO-BUY
No shop-bought non-essential treats.
No books, stationary, yarn, fabric or notions.
No "new" (ie not replacements) clothes.
No "new" (ie not replacements) furniture, household items, telecoms.
No seeds or plants or houseplants or cut flowers.REVIEW
Household bills - energy, insurance, council tax, subscriptions.
Personal and business accounts for first half of year.
Savings and emergency fund goals.
I'm torn on one: perhaps you can help. Should I have a budget for purchasing more HIVE if the price drops further? Is it a weekly budget or a single one for the month?
Last time I did this, I set a goal to reduce monthly expenditure by 10%. I did pretty well that time, and managed to save 25% for that month, so a nice boost to my savings!

These conditions are going on here at the moment, since the corona virus has been here, it is getting so much that those who are here used to eat three meals a day, now they are forced to eat two meals a day and the poor people he cannot feed his children, the situation is getting worse and people are committing suicide every day, so there is a lot of trouble here in Pakistan. My plan here is to play this platform for people to use it and earn some money for living.
I am very sorry to hear that @djbravo. Can this idea help you?
Yes its helpful.

That looks like a good list! Do you need to include essential replacements in case something you need for work breaks or wears out?
Oh yeah I thought about that. And look at that! Sockets. Lemme add it.

I really like the idea of this but know I wont be very good at it ! And I like that you have list "notions" under no-buy !!!
I like the prompt to review outgoings, so thats where I will concentrate. I'll look at my monthly outgoings and see where we can get a better deal on utilities and the like.
Thanks !
I agree with most of these

Our cost in Canada have gone nuts due to carbon tax so trying to cut back on power is next to impossible, along with the price of gas for the car has also gone nuts.

For a person like me who has lost everything due to C19, have struggled for 3 years barely able to put food on the table, I think I have done these unconsciously even until today. I will share my September no buy report later on separate or individual post, hopefully it can encourage people like Cinzia to get some way to make a saving.
About hive budget, it's all back to your mid and long term goal. I plan to hoard HIVE until the next bullrun, so right now I prefer the weekly buy because it keeps me on the railway. Hold up for a one big purchase is a great idea and it can double and triple your profit if you hit the right time and right price but its more like a double edge sword. When we have good amount of ammunition, sometime we easily lured or baited to buy things or invest on new project which is not on our plan with many silly reason such as "opportunity won't knock twice" or "golden/better opportunity".
I agree I find weekly buys easier to manage - I like the routine.
Look forward to your post.
I like this idea, especially since I had a salary adjustment this month and I want to organize myself to leave that extra money as savings.
Now I have some homework to do and share in a post.
Look forward to your post 😍
I have literally stopped buying books, subscription and also stopped those unnecessary games online. Instead I have started writing here on hive and also on the blog outside. I am also spending my time controlling my weight and diet. All of this has slowly worked out for me but I need to manage the expenses which are increased due to inflation like rent, fuel etc. Those seem to be unavoidable.
It looks like you have already done a lot of the hard work to change things. 😍
I wonder if we can find ways through September to manage some of those costs?
I'm going to be a bit contrariwise with this one ! I think the only thing that'll change is that I don't plan to buy any crypto in September, but I'd already decided that.
In terms of the rest of my life, most of what I would do is already done. Over the last couple of years, my wife and I have looked at just about every expense and worked out what we can improve.
I work from home and my wife is incredibly talented at making meals from scratch. We grow a certain amount ourselves; that'll be increasing next spring, but for the last 15 years every plant I've put in the garden has either given us an edible crop or been bee-friendly. Unnecessary subscriptions have been cut out. Any expenses that are left are either necessary, or for luxuries which we've decided we want to keep just to make life bearable and enjoyable.
But this is the kind of idea I still thoroughly support, so I'll still be doing my ongoing routine of looking at each cost as it happens and going "do I need to keep paying this ?"
Great that you already have this hand, @alonicus 😍
Do share any tips you have!
Thanks for your reply ! I reckon the answer is different for everyone, but it mainly comes down to just stopping and thinking for a second each time you spend money, as well as regularly reviewing what goes out of bank accounts. Also, you have to have a sense of balance; cutting so much out that you stop enjoying life is a guaranteed way to back-slide !
A few specific things I've got into the habit of doing include;
I'm sure there's more, but the main thing is that when my wife's business was closed by government diktat during the pandemic and neither of us got any support whatsoever (Rishi lied...), we just got into the habit of being continually mindful about both our spending and our lifestyles.
Some great ideas, there, thank you 😍
Continuous payment authorities are one of my bugbears!
This is a nice initiative.
Will take on this!
No buy is good. Especially when online shopping platforms always entice us with 9 September super sale. And often meals and gatherings at nice places end up causing us to splurge.
I will commit to only doing essential purchasing such as food, utilities and essential living expenses such as groceries and fuel. Thank you for sharing on this initiative with the community.
Oh, so easy to buy online!
That looks like a good list there 😍
Yes, online shopping is a super splurging tool. "add to cart" is very dangerous
Sometimes I add to cart and then see if I remember the next day what I added. If I forget about it, then I really didn't need that thing at all 😂
For a long time in my home we have already been following the rules of no-buy. Since COVID-19, we only spend what is strictly necessary and the whims are exceptional. It's a good idea and I'll look forward to reading the results.
The key is to never buy on impulse and think carefully if it is really needed. 😘🤗

I hope we'll share lots of good tips like this during September @palomap3 😍.
Yes, I will pay attention to learn new tricks, hehe. 😁

That's a good idea! 😍
Sorry about the expired date 😍
I've cleared it from the next draft so we should be straight from next Saturday.
I do love September no savings ... I already told Mrs T No Yarn ...
The fluffing look I got!!!
Well thank you @shanibeer 🤣🤣🤣
Actually I love it as I use up tins of food, pasta packets, stuff in the freezer etc.
I shall make a post on this for sure!
Thanks as ever for helping us all Shani 😁
Yes, I like clearing out the cupboards 😍
This is really a good initiative which encourages savings. Please count me in, I am joining this moving train, hopefully I can save som HBD from now
NO BUY
-Drinks and biscuits (this might be difficult, hahaha)
-new clothes ( oops, I had it in mind of getting one before now but I am taking this challenge..lolz)
-New hair 😩
-Books
Buy
-Foodstuff
-Beverages
-Data subscription
-Essential replacements..
I hope to save at least 10% of the amount of HBD I roughly earn per month at the end of this September challenge
I don't really know if this entry meets the SSC requirements, if not @deraaa , please come to my rescue 😀
😁
Except for food, essentials, and HIVE, I have not been buying other things but the husband is getting addicted to shopping online and can't be stopped, lol!
I do indulge in sweet treats (chocolates and sweet snacks) so it might be a good challenge to give it a "no-buy" this September and will see how it goes :) Do know that I still have a box of chocolates so I can survive the month without buying, haha!
😁
It's all about making do! 😁
Haha, that's right :) It's a test of one's resolve especially if one loves to splurge on things. Thankfully, I am not a shopper hehe
