The game itself offered me that price. The amount depended on how fast you wanted the transaction to happen. The $900 amount was for the slowest time available, it was even higher if you moved the slider to the faster time.
This was last fall/winter, when they were having some kind of promo. Things may have changed for the better since then.

I think you could of changed some HIVE over and then bought the land for a cheaper price. Is there any reason why you wanted to use ETH to pay?

I had 250 or so BAT tokens saved up from browsing using the Brave browser, and wanted to use them while the price was high. I did not know how high the ETH fees were back then.
