Issues with Edge Wallet
Lots of wallets has been my habit since agencies started prying into my digital money clip. Bitcoin is a necessary evil - the Western Union of an otherwise wonderful cryptosphere. There are exchanges that only allow bitcoin deposits. Some anonymous swap services will error with "that pair not found" until you enter BTC - then you can purchase the token that you want. I don't mind using bitcoin as long as I won't be needing the funds ten to fifteen hours. Most wallet apps allow management of other coins. I test them as my contacts recommend this one or that one.
I try to review as many mobile wallets as I can, but it takes time for their true colors to be shown. I use wallet apps to transfer small amounts from places that likely track addresses and then start to build a profile on who owns what coin. The goal is not to connect them all. It is the opposite of KYC. Last post, I found that Particl wallet is unable to manage to keep their bitcoin wallet feature working - I had to chase down 12 or 15 addresses and pull private keys. That wallet is being eliminated from my phones.
Some wallet apps may eventually be fixed. If I fine several bugs, I would rather move on to a new one that does reasonable testing, release, and then allows me to enjoy years of solid service. (coinomi comes to mind)
Today I would like to make others aware of a quirk or two in the Edge Wallet for Android.
The set up
A new trader was introduced to me though an existing contact. He wanted to buy crypto and asked what the limit would be. I told him that he would not be buying bitcoin or ethereum today and offered to sell him up to $2,000 of any other crypto. He came, we met, he bought the last of my XRP stash and walked away happy.
He got back to me within a few hours, hoping for a higher limit as many do. It just so happened that wanted to meet again the very next day. Bitcoin was down a couple thousand. He wanted either Litecoin or Monero. Monero seems to be holding stable through the dip, I set a time and we met the next day at a coffee shop.
This time would be $5,000 so I sent that amount to my Edge wallet and went out to meet him.
I normally send a smaller amount to confirm that the client's address is good and to make sure it arrives at the destination, in this case it was an exchange.
I specified $100 and sent it. (see "a")
Next I specified $4,900 and expected the wallet to convert that to the correct amount of XRP at the current market value. As you can see, the wallet only sent $490 and the client, a guy I had just met yesterday, looked at me as though I was hoping he would shake my hand and leave for home. I felt accused, but it was not his fault. (see "b")
I avoid bitcoin so that I do not have to sit with strangers in awkward silent dismay with thousands of their dollars in my pocket. Yet here I was doing exactly that due to a faulty wallet app.
I attempted to do the same thing again - insanity right? - expecting the proper amount of XMR to go out. Again only ten percent had left. (see "c")
I wanted this to be over with. I calculated the remaining funds owed and specified the amount - 17.869 XMR - and hit send. Error: - with the necessary error codes. Then a notification came in that I was receiving 1.96xxx XMR in my wallet. (no screenshot of error)
We decided to square up with bitcoin, and I looked to see which of my wallets had a spare $4,000 or so in it... found one... Then went back to Edge to look at the transactions and calculate the remainder... The error-on-send transaction had gone out. Surprise! (see "d")
This had now burned three hours of my day much like a bitcoin transaction normally does.
Digital cash needs to be fast like cash. Monero is fast. Edge seems to be half baked at best.
When I returned home, the client was ready to do another transaction - next day. He wanted to meet with me for round three, I mean, day three. He had completed Level 1 and level 2 of the EZRider game and wanted to advance - hehe. I responded that I want to investigate my mobile wallet solutions in order to keep trading reliably.
Updating Edge was the first thing I did. Then I ran a test fire to my core wallet - same thing - only 10% of the specified amount went out when entering a dollar amount for the transaction as you can see.
Conclusion
I remember the day I installed Edge - it seemed funny that my account would be recoverable only with the email, passphrase, and PIN that the user entered upon installation. I have tested restoration and it works. Being a crypto enthusiasts, I still like having my keys. I rarely break that rule, but as I said, I never planned to keep much money on this app while testing it.
The inability to send the specified amount is a big one. What if it had been a purchase? Days of emails and documents, transaction hashes being sent back and forth in order to undo the wrong amount. Time is precious.
The error could have lost me $4,000 if I had believed it and sent another coin from another wallet.
I am not sure if the amount issues and send errors exist when using other crypto coins within Edge. As with food poisoning at a certain restaurant, you don't go back to find out if a different item will also lay you up for a week.
I am shit canning Edge. It is an unnecessary frustration and I do not want to have to remember not to store much there (no keys), not to specify a dollar amounts (the 10% thing) and to wait for transactions with errors to go through.
Please share this post on twitter to the Edge Wallet people. I quit twitter because they have been banning hundreds of thousands of people that do not share @jack's opinion on things. If anyone wants to help Edge trouble shoot their wallet app, you are free to tweet this post. They will not see my review - I use F-Droid for apps because of google's business practices.
Final note.
With the quadrupling of my original investment, Hive has been among the top producers in my portfolio this year. Leo has more than tripled. I have enjoyed voting and earning as I go. Thank you Hive and LeoFinance for your warm welcome. And now a toast to a prosperous second quarter.

Oh man that sounds like a real pain in the ass lol. I’m not looking forward to trying those types of things out but the benefit to a lot of it as you say is you avoid KYC crap so it’s give and take. Thankfully I think crypto wallets for mobile phones seem to be a dime a dozen so there’s lots of opportunities for another one.
The other fun part about it is you get to shoot the shit and chit chat about it on here to earn a little bit. That’s probably my favorite part of this experience lol

Yeah, it sucks that they put so much time into a smooth interface, nice graphics and a slide to send. Then they forget to test it. I tried to put the blame on myself, "maybe it's because I didn't update it." Nope.
The guy is nice. I am thinking he will go whale here on Hive and Leo - I need the time to meet with him and explain how.
Neither of us is happy with the kinds of updates google wants to put on our phones and tracking will surely ID us as freedom lovers - next step is likely a notebook with Linux - core wallets all around and burner phones for coms.

Well what a painful experience that must have been, imagine having to lose the time, the money and the transaction lagging. As for your hive and Leo investment cheers to that, it's been a really great time to be on hive and investing in Leo too.

Great review, thanks for the warning! Have you tried CakeWallet? It's designed for Monero but also handles BTC.
Multiwallets may be convenient, but even aside from random issues like this one, I don't expect them to keep up with multiple experimental technology projects.
