The year 2022 will see the rise of some of the cool Metaverse platforms in addition to Facebook, Microsoft, and big giants like Nike and Addidas entering the space with their fully loaded investments & tech capabilities. They are rapidly gaining popularity each day. The metaverse refers to digital platforms focused on virtual and augmented reality where users can interact with each other within a code-generated environment. They are generally powered by Crypto & Blockchain technologies otherwise it's gonna be just another WEB2 Social media platform.
We all know that the travel industry is so huge although it got hit badly after the pandemic. Slowly and gradually it is going to revive in the upcoming years but I suspect that it will see a huge technical advancement soon. In this blog, I am going to discuss whether Metaverse platforms will make different kinds of Travel obsolete or not.
Business Travel
Business Travel is obsolete already and it will shrink down even more in the future. After COVID, many have realized 90% of the time, you don't need to travel especially when you are in a tech business. Meetings can easily happen over a zoom call. It's cheap and not time-consuming. Look what zoom did to skype and hopefully, in the future, Metaverse will do the same to these two applications if they do not upgrade with AR and VR technology. Imagine the amount of pollution you are not creating by traveling to different countries just to conclude business when that can be done online. We have often seen it in the movies, especially in Avengers where you don't need to be present in one place to communicate with your fellow teammates. The meetings would happen with hologram images appearing/sitting on the conference table or they will happen in the Metaverse with a virtual conference room with avatars of your teammates sitting in front of you.
Personal Travel
Personal travel will keep on happening and I think it will hardly see any major change happening anytime soon. For personal reasons, people generally travel to meet their family members & friends, to attend parties, weddings and funerals. In India, we have seen so many Covid deaths happening last year. During lockdowns, I have attended 3 funeral ceremonies online over a zoom call. Similarly, I have attended several birthday parties online. This made me wonder how two people communicate when they are miles apart, divided by borders. It's a norm for them already but during extreme situations like pandemics, it become a norm for everyone. In a more connected world, I feel that Metaverse will have a huge application for Personal travel as well considering the extreme situations we human beings are faced with. But I would still want to meet my family & friends in person if possible and I think that's going to be the case with almost everyone I know. What about you? Let me know in the comments!
Leisure Travel
According to me, Leisure Travel travel would be least affected because of Metaverse. People choose to go on vacation to be away from work, their gadgets and their normal life to have a refreshing experience. I love to travel for pleasure and it's the best form of experience you can get. Travel makes you learn about life and turn you into a better person. Sometimes you get to meet and learn about new cultures. Going through all of it via a computer screen or VR goggles won't be as sexy as doing it in real life. I mean, I have already seen Niagra Falls in the pictures. There are even 360* videos available to experience it in a way like you are already there. Even if this technology upgrades itself to the highest levels, I would still choose to do it physically. But that's just me! You never know, there could be a time when we won't be able to distinguish what's real and what's not but we are far away from that advancement. In any case, it could those people who cannot afford to do it in real life due to financial or medical reasons.

I think it will make travel obsolete. In a way, I think there might be a demand for people who want the safety of a virtual environment while being able to experience everything there. So I think even vacations will be affected once the technology gets good enough.

This is an interesting discussion. I tend to think that people will still travel for leisure but that's partially because I've never experienced a fully immersive simulation so the "real thing" is waaaay better than anything I know so far.
Maybe, as technology progresses, the sensation of a metaverse travel will be very similar to that of the real world.

The metaverse won't make travel obsolete.
People still want to go and experience people, places and cultures in person.
But the metaverse will compliment travel, especially in business settings.
A lot of business travel is a chore and if you can effectively meet and get what you need done in a virtual setting, then why wouldn't you choose that instead of leaving your family/life for a few days?

I think the most important thing in traveling is the mood. And a lot can be related to this. But comfort is also not unimportant for me, and therefore I prefer to choose the best in these matters.
