Mask. Online versus Reality.

in LeoFinance2 years ago

Where did this week go? I couldn't believe it when I saw in the corner of my laptop written: Thursday.

I wasn't decided what to write about today.

In the end, I made up my mind.

There is that widespread belief that there's a lot more faking in the online world than in the real world. You know, people on the cover of the distance, and sometimes anonymity (which has its virtues in this world too), sometimes create completely different personas online than in real life.

Let's say that's true, and faking in the online world is probably more than in real life at this point. But the time will come when our online reputation will be influenced by our actions in Web 3.0.

What my mind jumped at when I was thinking about all the potential bad actors in the online world was that they exist in the real world too.

More than that, if regular people may not be totally truthful with what they say and publish online, that is also true in the real world.

For example, I know at least one person directly in the real world who can lie with such ease, to the point I don't believe that person even distinguishes between the web of lies and truth anymore. Everybody who knows that person for some time knows that and learned to accept it and not ever rely on what that person says - if it's important - without confirmation from someone else. Reputation. And its effects.

And then we have photoshopping a person's look. It's another form of lying or twisting the truth. But that's not reduced to the online world or posters or TV. Someone with 20 cosmetic surgeries (that weren't due to a terrible accident), is in a way photoshopping... the real-world version of themselves.

And then we have self-control. People with a temper can often lose control in a conversation. Even more so when the conversation is face-to-face or in real-time (chat, phone).

But we all have moments when we wish we kept our mouths shut. That's why, when we need to talk about a topic that ignited some bad emotions inside us, it is recommended to leave some time to pass before you approach the subject, enough to cool off. And that should work in real life as well as the online world.

That's theory. In reality, people sometimes... can't wait. :)

I'm not sure if this post made any sense to you. If not, I am sorry! I'll try to do better next time.

Hello Gadrian,

I'm John Huckel, the developer of the Matrix-8 Solution. My friend Atma has sought to get you to look at it. Among many other things - it provides a way to establish a Trusted Reputation for those who use the platform.

Think of a mash-up of a Chatroom and a Crowdfunding platform. The Matrix-8 will provide the standard Chatroom where ideas can be discussed openly. Then when the Participants want to go beyond just talking, they can use the matrix platform to Deliberate and Vote in anonymity.

As you point out - anyone can lie their head off on line and not be found out. BUT in commerce, if you don't pay as the buyer, or you provide shoddy products as a seller, your Reputation will soon be in the toilet. With the Matrix-8 Solution, both worlds are straddled. Once a Participant's activities can be tracked in the Real World it's a different story.

Please review 'Trusted Reputation' found here - https://peakd.com/hive-153630/@atma.love/trusted-reputation?ref=atma.love. Then get back to me. I think we have important Goals in common.

Later,

jh

i actually wanted you to engage with @blocktrades as i'm not sure if he has looked at Matrix-8 yet. i think @gadrian has already read the post.

As Atma said, I read part of the post at the time and talked to him about it. If Dan (blocktrades) has time, I know he had plans about creating a better reputation system in the future, not necessarily related to Hive. And he responded to Atma below. Give a read to the articles he linked too, if you haven't.

I believe there are many reasons why people try to mask themselves.
Sometimes it is simply keeping anonymous for safety reasons; other times, I think it is a form of escape from their real life.
Sometimes it is a sign of deeper issues with the person and their self-esteem.

The worst one is the person who masks in order to deceive others and eventually profit from the house of cards.

Good post, Adrian. It really makes you think.

I like that you listed the different reasons why one would use masks. I believe escape from real life and low self-esteem may be the most common reasons why a person would put on a mask online.

Makes perfect sense to me.

This would help Solution to Reputation and Governance issues on Blockchains https://peakd.com/hive-153630/@atma.love/trusted-reputation

Reputation will at some point need to be redone. Blocktrades spoke of a project he has in mind in the future in this direction, not necessarily linked to Hive, but that can be applied to Hive. Obviously, this is something that goes beyond Hive and reputation in our ecosystem.

i in-courage you to read the post if you didn't. It goes way beyond "Trusted Reputation" which is a part of #TheMatrix8Solution.

Here's screenshot of part of a summary i made in this comment which also contains further links

@blocktrades, fyi

I didn't finish it, but I read a part of it this morning. Yes, I've seen this approach before, I just don't remember the blockchain, where decisions are always taken between a short number of nodes selected based on certain criteria. I haven't seen the same approach extended to reputation, but if it works on that blockchain (I wish I'd remember the name, it isn't one of the big ones), why not?

i don't know about that.

To be clear though, Matrix8 is not meant to be for code governance, for security of chain, which needs to be instant, coded to happen automatically.

The software we're developing is also much more than a simple reputation system. That's just one usage of it.

Great, can we compare?

Here's some intro articles I wrote a long time ago that lightly touches on some of the ideas (but doesn't delve much into the ultimate goals, etc). But it is a starting point for understanding the software at a functional level:

https://hive.blog/hivemind/@blocktrades/modeling-information-in-an-information-rating-system

Thanks for sharing. i've read them both.

i'll mention John Huckel @matrix-8 (Designer of The Matrix-8 Solution) to invite him to read and respond.

Oh, this is one of my favorite topics! So much has been said about it, and so much more needs to be said....

What worries me now is the involuntary mask I put on myself. To protect myself or is it a reptilian function, but it happens many times in a day. I see it in others as well. Anyway, I took care of myself first, because I can't change others yet...

Thanks for bringing this up again, it may not be for your audience, but useful anyway!

We all put on masks sometimes. For example, pretending to be interested in a topic or at least listening when we are not, to not hurt the feelings of the one talking. And there are numerous such examples in life.

About what is or isn't for an audience. I hear this lame excuse made a lot on TV: if that's what the public wants... The public, as a whole, is like a child. Gets bored easily, but can be educated. Or manipulated, depending on the purpose.

I think it makes sense and it's hard to tell whether or not people are really what they show themselves as. The internet and games can be helpful but it can also be detrimental. So it depends more on the person itself.

The internet and games can be helpful but it can also be detrimental.

If one doesn't perceive the difference between the virtual (game) and reality, then indeed that's an issue. But even in real life we have people who live in their own world and there are sociopaths who don't have empathy toward other people and may even enjoy inflicting harm on others.

. . . it is recommended to leave some time to pass before you approach the subject, enough to cool off.

I consider this wise advice.

Yep! Usually, I follow this advice and generally I am a calm person. But sometimes I slip too. :)

I suppose many can relate to such an experience.

The online world is just a reflection of the real world imo.

I think you've captured the main idea in one sentence. :)
