Renting, staking, and compounding. I invested less than $100 during the alpha phase and pulled some very nice cards. Still don't see a reason to take any profits or sell any cards.
Splinterlands is a much better game than AXIE and many others out there, I see no reason why it won't completely dominate the NFT market once everyone realizes it is an actual working product, not a work of fiction like many others.

I've been thinking about starting up Axie for a while. I even downloaded the app and everything but I've not just pulled the trigger yet.
It makes no economic sense for people that are used to spending $60 on games. If they are the targeted audience you can't reach them with a $3k minimum pay-to-play.

$3k? That's quite an expensive entry amount. Seems more like a crypto investment than a game tbh.
You can theoretically start with less than $1k but if you want to actually play the game and be competitive $3k seems to be the entry sum.
One more reason why I expect Splinterlands to be a much bigger game than Axie.
