Square wants to use Bitcoin to enter the Defi space. I don't think I see many Defi networks on BTC because most of them tend to be on ETH, Polygon and BSC.

There are no smart contracts on Bitcoin that is why you dont see any DeFi on there.
It is one of the things holding Hive back at this moment.

That makes me question how much research Square did since BTC doesn't have smart contracts. Are they planning to do it on a second layer network?

I would say it is a second layer although there is talk of it being added.
