On December 31, 1972, Roberto Clemente, future Hall of Fame baseball player, is killed along with four others when the cargo plane in which he is traveling crashes off the coast of Puerto Rico. Clemente was on his way to deliver relief supplies to Nicaragua following a devastating earthquake there a week earlier.

This event is an integral part of the baseball career Roberto Clemente had. It cut his career and life short, but not before he reached the key milestone of 3,000 hits.

Being Puerto Rican on my late Mom’s side I grew up as Clemente being one of my heroes for what he did off the field. I learned about him in elementary school. I didn’t start watching baseball until 1973 so I never saw him play.

I learned about him in the late 1970s, so I knew less than you; I was lucky to see Reggie Jackson play during Peak Reggie. That's also when I learned about Nicaragua as a country (before the Daniel Ortega era).

I was watching that three homer game and the had a Reggie bar or two lol
