šŸ“• 'Never Split the Difference' by Chris Voss

Negotiating as if your life depended on itā€¦

This guy knows a thing or 2 about striking a good deal. The author worked as a prominent figure in international hostage negotiations and was the go-to guy for many ransom requests.

The title may suggest being hard-nosed and not willing to budge your position. That's not the case, but more a reference to the common theme of negotiatingā€¦

That is, offering a figure or position, the other side counter-offering, and meeting somewhere in the middle. However, it can go a lot better than that (and had to in Voss's case!) and leave all sides happy.

You may not be in such a high stakes situation but it equally applies to the day-to-dayā€¦ everything is based around these concepts, we're just discussing different levels and circumstances.

Worth a read and may just give you some useful tips!

šŸ“˜ 'You Are The Placebo' by Joe Dispenza

Are you really the placebo, how can that help us, and who is Dr Joe?

We've all heard of the placebo effect - taking a 'sugar pill' (literally or figuratively) with the subject believing it is (or likely to be) the active catalyst involved in a treatment or desired changeā€¦ and a healing process taking place as if that were the case, even though there was never anything 'active' contained.

Such is the power of the human mind and the potential we sit onā€¦

That is the subject of this book and life work of Joe Dispenza.

It also opens a whole world of possibilities. We kind of get it on one level, but perhaps don't really follow that train of thought into the realms of what's possible.

The fact that this can happen, means we are definitely underutilising this knowledge and dismissing the huge implicationsā€¦

A very powerful concept, and one worth exploring!

šŸ“• 'So Good They Can't Ignore You' by Cal Newport

Why skills trump passion in the quest for work you loveā€¦

Cal's back, and what's Steve Martin got to do with it?

Whereas Deep Work goes against the grain of collaboration and distraction, encouraging people to nurture higher valued skills cultivated in a focused environment.

This book talks about the modern phenomenon of following your passion, and why that could actually be a bad idea, and the title is a quote from the comedian Steve Martinā€¦

The point Newport makes is that you shouldn't blindly follow your passion but get so good at something that you build up a value 'bank' and you become passionate about it in the process.

Newport does write a good, in-depth, well thought out and researched book. Not hugely entertaining prose but an academic, structured and considered approachā€¦

šŸ“— 'On Writing' by Stephen King

By the time I was fourteen the nail in my wall would no longer support the weight of the rejection slips impaled upon it. I replaced the nail with a spike and went on writing

I'm sure this guy needs no introduction, so let's start with a classic quote of his above, on the power of persistence.

It's a chap who goes by the name of Mr Stephen King, calls himself a writer and along with all his tales of the macabre, has brought this little non-fiction nugget to help us along in our wordy craftā€¦

He is of course one of the biggest names out there and as qualified as anyone to offer advice, and this book could be said to be a 'bible' (or top 3 reference) for any writer.

Here are a few tips to get you started:

  • Avoid Adverbs
  • No Passion for Passive
  • Read & Writeā€¦ a lot!
  • Keep it Simple
  • Sit down to Write (Regardless)
