Yeah. I would say you are correct. The problem is that is not how we want the user base to be. Incentivizing is a great way to introduce them. But when people disappear, it shows they are not part of the foundation.

Why not. In the Weekend battle, threaders demonstrated how to produce 1500, 2000, or even more threads in just 3 days. We still have 8 days to go in May. It is achievable.
But there are no such XP points for achieving 5000 feat. If Zealy includes another benchmark of 5000 threads, trust me people will start roaring like never before once again.
To inculcate that habit you need extrinsic gratification in the initial days, after a certain period threading will become their intrinsic passion. The initial conditioning needs incentives/contests/challenges.
A few have the potential to get to 5,000 threads for the month. They are the super users.

Solution- modify the adoption campaign into an addiction campaign with a stretch timeline.
Yeah or implement longer term gamification that takes into account cumulative activities.
difficult milestones should be set with a long stretch of marathon and also adequate checks and balances on spammy content.
