Nvidia‘s accelerated computing has helped India manage its tollbooth traffic, which spans four million miles across 1,000 tollbooths.
Tne Indian road network is the second-largest in the world, and most of it is run manually. Traditional tollbooths, wherever in the world they’re deployed, can contribute to massive traffic delays, long commute times and serious road congestion.
To help automate tollbooths across India, Calsoft, an Indian-American technology company, helped implement a broad range of Nvidia technologies integrated with the country’s dominant payment system, known as the unified payments interface, or UPI, for a client.
Manual tollbooths demand more time and labor compared to automated ones. However, automating India’s toll systems faces an extra complication: the diverse range of license plates.
India’s non-standardized plates pose a significant challenge to the accuracy of automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) systems. Any implementation would need to address these plate variations, which include divergent color, sizing, font styles and placement upon vehicles, as well as many different languages.
The solution Calsoft helped build automatically reads passing vehicle plates and charges the associated driver’s UPI account. This approach reduces the need for manual toll collection and is a massive step toward addressing traffic in the region.

Skyfire created a payment network specifically for AI agents to make autonomous transactions. Now, obviously, AI agents are hard to control today, so the idea of one tied to your bank account is terrifying. However, Skyfire uses a number of safeguards to prevent AI agents from overspending, making the whole thing a little less scary.
Skyfire assigns each AI agent a digital wallet with a unique identifier, where businesses can deposit a set amount of funds they want the agent to spend, so they don’t get unlimited access to a bank account. Skyfire also allows customers to set limits in how much an AI agent can spend in one transaction and over time. If an AI agent tries to overspend, it will ping a human to review it. Skyfire also offers a dashboard to view exactly how much, and where, their agent is spending.
Skyfire’s co-founder and CEO Amir Sarhangi sold his last startup, Jibe, to Google, and the RCS messaging protocol Jibe helped pioneer became the standard for Android’s billion users. Now, he’s trying to develop an open protocol to power payments in the AI era.
“AI agents can’t do anything if they can’t make payments, it’s just a glorified search,” said Skyfire co-founder and Chief Product Officer Craig DeWitt in an interview with TechCrunch. “Either we figure out a way where agents are actually able to do things, or they don’t do anything, and therefore, they’re not agents.”
On Wednesday, Skyfire officially launched its payment network and announced $8.5 million in seed funding raised from Neuberger Berman, Inception Capital, Arrington Capital, and other investors. Those figures were shared by Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana in a social media post on X. The new 100,000 figure is double what the company has previously disclosed. Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai noted on the company’s earnings call this summer Waymo was delivering well over 50,000 paid rides per week, a number that Waymo also noted in a June blog post.
Waymo has reached that milestone with a fleet of hundreds of fully autonomous and electric Jaguar I-Pace vehicles. The company doesn’t share specific fleet numbers, but a Freedom of Information Act request from the California Department of Revenue revealed the company has 778 robotaxis under its deployment permit in the state. It’s unclear if some of those vehicles are operating in Phoenix.
Waymo has long had a foothold in Phoenix, which it continues to grow. But its most notable expansion has been in California, where it received last August the final remaining permits required to operate a robotaxi service commercially.
Since then, Waymo has moved to a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week service in all of San Francisco and continues to move into new areas in the sprawling city of Los Angeles. Waymo recently expanded service to other cities in the San Francisco Peninsula, including Daly City, and started testing its fully autonomous vehicles with no human safety driver on freeways in the area. The company is also ramping up efforts to access pickup and drop-offs at San Francisco International Airport, although the process to obtain approval promises to be slow.
The company also operates in Austin, but has yet to charge for driverless rides there.

The round values the two-year-old company at $2.25 billion, sources familiar with the matter told CNBC. The sources preferred not to be named as the information has not been made public.
Story said that it raised the funds in a Series B round — typically the third major round of funding in a private startup’s growth journey after seed and Series A — led by Andreessen Horowitz, which is also known as a16z.

A candidate running for the mayor of Cheyenne in the US state of Wyoming with an artificial intelligence bot has lost the primary election.
In results announced by Laramie County on Aug. 20, officials tabulated that nonpartisan candidate Victor Miller and his AI bot VIC — Virtual Integrated Citizen — got 327 votes from Cheyenne residents out of the roughly 11,000 cast in a primary election. Incumbent Patrick Collins, who has served as mayor of the Wyoming capital city since 2021, and Rick Coppinger will advance to the November general election.
“As the first person to put artificial intelligence directly on the ballot, offering voters the novel choice of AI governance, our campaign has marked a historic moment in politics and technology,” said Miller in an Aug. 20 concession statement. “I served merely as the necessary human interface to get this new form of intelligence on the ballot, since current laws don’t allow AI to run independently.”
Wyoming officials challenged Miller’s introduction of the AI bot after he registered for the mayoral race. Though state officials allowed his name to appear on the ballot, Miller asked residents to consider the bot when casting their votes, updating its name to Virtual Integrated Citizen, The Official Robot — i.e., VICTOR.
As tech companies race to deliver on-device AI, we are seeing a growing body of research and techniques for creating small language models (SLMs) that can run on resource-constrained devices.
The latest models, created by a research team at Nvidia, leverage recent advances in pruning and distillation to create Llama-3.1-Minitron 4B, a compressed version of the Llama 3 model. This model rivals the performance of both larger models and equally sized SLMs while being significantly more efficient to train and deploy.
Pruning and distillation are two key techniques for creating smaller, more efficient language models. Pruning involves removing less important components of a model. “Depth pruning” removes complete layers while “width pruning” drops specific elements such as neurons and attention heads.
Model distillation is a technique that transfers knowledge and capabilities from a large model—often called the “teacher model”—to a smaller, simpler “student model.” There are two main ways to do distillation. First is “SGD training,” where the student model is trained on the inputs and responses of the teacher. Another method is “classical knowledge distillation,” where in addition to the results, the student is trained on the inner activations of the teacher model.
In a previous study, Nvidia researchers demonstrated the effectiveness of combining pruning with classical knowledge distillation. They started with the Nemotron 15B model and progressively pruned and distilled it down to an 8-billion parameter model. They then performed a light retraining procedure using model distillation with the original model as the teacher and the pruned model as the student. Finally, they repeated the process with the 8B model as the starting point to create a smaller 4B model.
This approach resulted in a 16% improvement in performance on the popular MMLU benchmark compared to training a 4-billion parameter model from scratch. Impressively, the entire process required 40X fewer tokens than training the model from scratch. The model’s performance was comparable to Mistral 7B, Gemma 7B, and Llama-3 8B, which were trained on trillions of tokens.
A survey by Epoch AI of some of these techniques, like scaffolding, tool use, and so on, finds that techniques like this can typically result in effective compute gains of 5-30x on many benchmarks. METR (an organization that evaluates models) similarly found very large performance improvements on their set of agentic tasks, via unhobbling from the same GPT-4 base model: from 5% with just the base model, to 20% with the GPT-4 as posttrained on release, to nearly 40% today from better posttraining, tools, and agent scaffolding.

If you care at all about AI generated video, you’ve probably already heard of the big names in the rapidly emerging sector: Runway ML with its Gen-3 Alpha Turbo model, OpenAI’s (still non-public) Sora, Luma’s Dream Machine, and Pika’s self-titled AI video generator.
Now you can add yet another name to that list: Hotshot, a startup founded in 2023 by Aakash Sastry, John Mullan, and Duncan Crawbuck, today announced its new self-titled text-to-video AI generator model as a public “early preview.”
“For the first time in over a decade, it’s possible to build powerful and novel video applications for customers,” wrote Sastry in a post on the social network X. “This model is our foundation for building those experiences and this is only the beginning. We can’t wait to share more soon.”
Indeed, models today are still incredibly hobbled! For example:
They don’t have long-term memory.
They can’t use a computer (they still only have very limited tools).
They still mostly don’t think before they speak. When you ask ChatGPT to write an essay, that’s like expecting a human to write an essay via their initial stream-of-consciousness.
They can (mostly) only engage in short back-and-forth dialogues, rather than going away for a day or a week, thinking about a problem, researching different approaches, consulting other humans, and then writing you a longer report or pull request.
They’re mostly not personalized to you or your application (just a generic chatbot with a short prompt, rather than having all the relevant background on your company and your work).
Right now, models can’t do this yet. Even with recent advances in long-context, this longer context mostly only works for the consumption of tokens, not the production of tokens—after a while, the model goes off the rails or gets stuck. It’s not yet able to go away for a while to work on a problem or project on its own.
But unlocking test-time compute might merely be a matter of relatively small “unhobbling” algorithmic wins. Perhaps a small amount of RL helps a model learn to error correct (“hm, that doesn’t look right, let me double check that”), make plans, search over possible solutions, and so on. In a sense, the model already has most of the raw capabilities, it just needs to learn a few extra skills on top to put it all together.
While early unhobbling improvements teach models to use individual isolated tools, I expect that with multimodal models we will soon be able to do this in one fell swoop: we will simply enable models to use a computer like a human would.
That means joining your Zoom calls, researching things online, messaging and emailing people, reading shared docs, using your apps and dev tooling, and so on. (Of course, for models to make the most use of this in longer-horizon loops, this will go hand-in-hand with unlocking test-time compute.)
To put this in perspective, suppose GPT-4 training took 3 months. In 2027, a leading AI lab will be able to train a GPT-4-level model in a minute. The OOM effective compute scaleup will be dramatic.
Salesforce, the enterprise software giant, has released a new suite of open-source large multimodal AI models that could accelerate research and development of more capable artificial intelligence systems.

The next natural step is to package things like multi-step workflows, memory and personalization in the form of agents that can solve use cases in multiple functions including sales and engineering.
The expectation is that a simple prompt from a user will enable an agent to classify intent, break down the goal into multiple steps and complete the task, whether it includes internet searches, authentication into multiple tools or learning from past repeat behaviors.
These agents, when applied to consumer use cases, start giving us a sense of a future where everyone can have a personal Jarvis-like agent on their phones that understands them. Want to book a trip to Hawaii, order food from your favorite restaurant, or manage personal finances? The future of you and I being able to securely manage these tasks using personalized agents is possible, but, from a technological perspective, we are still far from that future.

The computer security software company McAfee has revealed a new tool aimed at helping users combat the rise in artificial intelligence deepfakes.
On Aug. 21, the company introduced its new AI Deepfake Detector software, the first of its kind. The tool is available on select Lenovo AI computers and is designed to help users detect deceptive video content with unmatched speed and accuracy.

I have started "this one" quite a long ago... and damn... it just has been the craziest best invented pools game I ever played... (note, it's not a real game with a real UI, but someone invented the right tokenomics for it to have some strategy).
Cost of playing it? minuscule... (in my case, probably profit, but I don't really care for it to be profitable, and I just want to see where it goes, and how people react to things).

Nvidia‘s accelerated computing has helped India manage its tollbooth traffic, which spans four million miles across 1,000 tollbooths.
Tne Indian road network is the second-largest in the world, and most of it is run manually. Traditional tollbooths, wherever in the world they’re deployed, can contribute to massive traffic delays, long commute times and serious road congestion.
To help automate tollbooths across India, Calsoft, an Indian-American technology company, helped implement a broad range of Nvidia technologies integrated with the country’s dominant payment system, known as the unified payments interface, or UPI, for a client.

Manual tollbooths demand more time and labor compared to automated ones. However, automating India’s toll systems faces an extra complication: the diverse range of license plates.
India’s non-standardized plates pose a significant challenge to the accuracy of automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) systems. Any implementation would need to address these plate variations, which include divergent color, sizing, font styles and placement upon vehicles, as well as many different languages.
The solution Calsoft helped build automatically reads passing vehicle plates and charges the associated driver’s UPI account. This approach reduces the need for manual toll collection and is a massive step toward addressing traffic in the region.

Skyfire created a payment network specifically for AI agents to make autonomous transactions. Now, obviously, AI agents are hard to control today, so the idea of one tied to your bank account is terrifying. However, Skyfire uses a number of safeguards to prevent AI agents from overspending, making the whole thing a little less scary.

Skyfire assigns each AI agent a digital wallet with a unique identifier, where businesses can deposit a set amount of funds they want the agent to spend, so they don’t get unlimited access to a bank account. Skyfire also allows customers to set limits in how much an AI agent can spend in one transaction and over time. If an AI agent tries to overspend, it will ping a human to review it. Skyfire also offers a dashboard to view exactly how much, and where, their agent is spending.
Skyfire’s co-founder and CEO Amir Sarhangi sold his last startup, Jibe, to Google, and the RCS messaging protocol Jibe helped pioneer became the standard for Android’s billion users. Now, he’s trying to develop an open protocol to power payments in the AI era.
“AI agents can’t do anything if they can’t make payments, it’s just a glorified search,” said Skyfire co-founder and Chief Product Officer Craig DeWitt in an interview with TechCrunch. “Either we figure out a way where agents are actually able to do things, or they don’t do anything, and therefore, they’re not agents.”
On Wednesday, Skyfire officially launched its payment network and announced $8.5 million in seed funding raised from Neuberger Berman, Inception Capital, Arrington Capital, and other investors. (Arrington Capital is led by Michael Arrington, the founder of TechCrunch, who left the publication in 2011.)

Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai noted on the company’s earnings call this summer Waymo was delivering well over 50,000 paid rides per week, a number that Waymo also noted in a June blog post.

Waymo has reached that milestone with a fleet of hundreds of fully autonomous and electric Jaguar I-Pace vehicles. The company doesn’t share specific fleet numbers, but a Freedom of Information Act request from the California Department of Revenue revealed the company has 778 robotaxis under its deployment permit in the state. It’s unclear if some of those vehicles are operating in Phoenix.
Waymo has long had a foothold in Phoenix, which it continues to grow. But its most notable expansion has been in California, where it received last August the final remaining permits required to operate a robotaxi service commercially.
Since then, Waymo has moved to a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week service in all of San Francisco and continues to move into new areas in the sprawling city of Los Angeles. Waymo recently expanded service to other cities in the San Francisco Peninsula, including Daly City, and started testing its fully autonomous vehicles with no human safety driver on freeways in the area. The company is also ramping up efforts to access pickup and drop-offs at San Francisco International Airport, although the process to obtain approval promises to be slow.
The company also operates in Austin, but has yet to charge for driverless rides there.

The latest models, created by a research team at Nvidia, leverage recent advances in pruning and distillation to create Llama-3.1-Minitron 4B, a compressed version of the Llama 3 model. This model rivals the performance of both larger models and equally sized SLMs while being significantly more efficient to train and deploy.

The power of pruning and distillation
Pruning and distillation are two key techniques for creating smaller, more efficient language models. Pruning involves removing less important components of a model. “Depth pruning” removes complete layers while “width pruning” drops specific elements such as neurons and attention heads.
Model distillation is a technique that transfers knowledge and capabilities from a large model—often called the “teacher model”—to a smaller, simpler “student model.” There are two main ways to do distillation. First is “SGD training,” where the student model is trained on the inputs and responses of the teacher. Another method is “classical knowledge distillation,” where in addition to the results, the student is trained on the inner activations of the teacher model.
In a previous study, Nvidia researchers demonstrated the effectiveness of combining pruning with classical knowledge distillation. They started with the Nemotron 15B model and progressively pruned and distilled it down to an 8-billion parameter model. They then performed a light retraining procedure using model distillation with the original model as the teacher and the pruned model as the student. Finally, they repeated the process with the 8B model as the starting point to create a smaller 4B model.
This approach resulted in a 16% improvement in performance on the popular MMLU benchmark compared to training a 4-billion parameter model from scratch. Impressively, the entire process required 40X fewer tokens than training the model from scratch. The model’s performance was comparable to Mistral 7B, Gemma 7B, and Llama-3 8B, which were trained on trillions of tokens.

Keeping the maximum players of a guild claiming daily, is probably the best strategy in my view, for any guilds. Researched stuff is super valuable long term.

I have started "this one" quite a long ago... and damn... it just has been the craziest best invented pools game I ever played... (note, it's not a real game with a real UI, but someone invented the right tokenomics for it to have some strategy).
Cost of playing it? minuscule... (in my case, probably profit, but I don't really care for it to be profitable, and I just want to see where it goes, and how people react to things).
