A friend of mine, Vini Barbosa, made a great post about how regulatory uncertainty rewarded Bitcoin, Ethereum, and memecoins (therefore Solana), and how the first two at least would be "pushed" by the future market as utility takes over.

I would add:

  1. Bitcoin and Ethereum won't be "punished" but will start performing more poorly than actual utility platforms.

  2. 95% of the people talking about utility vastly overestimate the utility of the projects they're thinking of when they say that. 😬

No, 2016 tech isn't good enough anymore without massive improvements. Evolve or die! 🧬

Here's the whole post on X, I'll get him on InLeo soon enough!

People who haven't been involved don't appreciate just how brutal it's been dealing with every form of FUD imaginable: "Premined scam!" "Unregistered security!" "Too private for exchanges!" "Not private!"

It's all fading away.

Hey @khaleelkazi, #feedback: the dashboard should also include LEO earnings.

Ideally, a month-to-month chart of earnings of HBD, Hive power, and LEO separately, then liquid vs. illiquid earnings.

Make it happen!

Yep it’s something being worked on with the infra

It requires us to build our own DB & APIs (hive earnings already have an api from the chain, Leo earnings are something we have to build from scratch)

Cool, looking forward to seeing it!

Looking at my dashboard I'm able to estimate pretty well how much HBD I earn per month. With the Dash integration it'll be HBD+LEO. Would be nice to be able to tell people about how much to expect.

100%. We'll likely have something even better for #dash users specifically since we'll show the earnings till next automated conversion

Lion tip of the day :

The #nfl is a stand in until #mlb Hot Stove season gets cooking.

Juan Soto is the prime rib in this year's class.

Only if he signs with the Mets lol.

He is still prime rib...it means the NY Mets ended up with chopped liver.

It’s all a question if Cohen outbids everyone but giving him the years too. It only works if the contract allows for the team to continue building a winning product like Shohei did @taskmaster4460le

Cohen has shown the inclination to lose money on the team if he has to. I know that wont go on forever but they cleared out a lot of salaries.

Stearns is also committed to having a couple young guys on the roster each year, to save some money at those positions.

For example, a Vientos for Pete swap would save a fair bit of money over the next couple years. Helps to offset things.

I see him having a starting staff without a high payroll. He will do like he did last year along with developing his own pitchers.

If they don’t sign Soto I won’t be crushed only because I have full confidence in the Cohen Stearns regime @taskmaster4450le there are a few guys out there they can bring in to make the Mets formidable.

I always liked Rich Eisen.

Part 1/5:

The NFL's Biggest Storylines: A Week 12 Preview

Eagles Soar, Commanders Stumble

The Philadelphia Eagles are firmly in the race for the NFC's top seed, while the Washington Commanders' playoff hopes are in jeopardy. The Eagles have a favorable remaining schedule, with potential losses against the Lions, Bills, and Vikings. Meanwhile, the Commanders face a tough road ahead, including games against the Cowboys, Titans, and Eagles. Despite their recent stumble, the Commanders are still likely to make the playoffs, but the Eagles have a legitimate shot at securing the coveted #1 seed.

Raven-Steelers Rivalry Renewed

Part 2/5:

This week's matchup between the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers promises to be a classic AFC North showdown. While Derrick Henry's dominance is always a concern, the panel believes that Russell Wilson and the Broncos' offense are more likely to have the better performance. Wilson has looked sharp in recent weeks, and the Steelers' defense may struggle to contain him.

Jets Aim to Spoil Patriots' Playoff Hopes

The struggling New York Jets have a chance to play spoiler against the New England Patriots this weekend. While the panel expects the Los Angeles Rams to bounce back from their recent woes, they believe the Jets have a better shot at pulling off an upset on the road.

Quarterback Redemption Narratives

Part 3/5:

Both Caleb Williams and Anthony Richardson will be looking to bounce back from recent struggles. The panel is more confident in Williams' ability to rebound, given his previous success in overcoming adversity.

Browns Seek Upset in Las Vegas

The Cleveland Browns, despite their 2-7 record, have a chance to pull off an upset against the Las Vegas Raiders on the road. The panel believes that the Browns' running game, led by Nick Chubb, could be the key to their success.

McCaffrey vs. Robinson: Battle of the Backs

The panel expects Christian McCaffrey to have a dominant performance against the Denver Broncos, citing the 49ers' offense and the Broncos' defense as factors in his favor.

Chiefs Aim to Stay Unbeaten, Bills Seek AFC's Top Seed

Part 4/5:

The panel believes that the Kansas City Chiefs are more likely to "eke out a win" to remain unbeaten, rather than the Buffalo Bills securing the AFC's #1 seed this week. The loss of Keenan Allen is seen as a significant blow to the Bills' offense.

Burrow and Chase vs. the Chargers

While the panel acknowledges the Chargers' offensive firepower, they believe that the combined yardage of Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase will exceed the Chargers' total team output, highlighting the Bengals' potent passing attack.

A Realistic Prediction: Wan'Dale Signs Elsewhere

Part 5/5:

When asked about the likelihood of Mike Tyson knocking out Jake Paul or Wan'Dale Robinson signing with a non-New York team, the panel opted for the more realistic scenario, predicting that Wan'Dale Robinson will sign with a team outside of New York.

OK I'm here. time to party!

23-14 Bills....FINISH THEM!!!!

A nine point lead is a good margin but is against the Chiefs.

2 point lead lol

Part 1/5:

Dak Prescott's Injury and the Cowboys' Struggles

The news of Dak Prescott's season-ending injury has cast a shadow over the Dallas Cowboys' 2022 campaign. While Jerry Jones and the organization may have hoped to use Prescott's absence as cover for their struggles, the reality is that the Cowboys were already a flawed team even before their star quarterback went down.

The Cowboys' Downward Spiral

Part 2/5:

Prior to Prescott's injury, the Cowboys were already showing signs of decline. Despite preseason expectations of a division title and playoff berth, the team had struggled to a 4-3 record, raising questions about their true talent level. As one of the co-hosts pointed out, the Cowboys' issues went beyond just the loss of Prescott, with the team's running game, offensive line, and overall roster construction all contributing to their underwhelming performance.

Dak Prescott's Regression

Part 3/5:

Even before the injury, Prescott was not playing at the level many had expected. His numbers this season were down across the board compared to his career averages, suggesting that he was not able to carry the team on his own without a strong supporting cast. The co-hosts noted that Prescott has historically relied on a strong running game and offensive line to be successful, and the Cowboys' inability to provide those elements this year had taken a toll on his production.

Jerry Jones' Questionable Decisions

Part 4/5:

The co-hosts argued that the root of the Cowboys' problems lies with owner and general manager Jerry Jones. They contended that many of Jones' offseason decisions, from the philosophical approach to team-building to specific personnel moves, have backfired and contributed to the team's current predicament. The failure to adequately address the running game and offensive line, as well as the decision to sign Prescott to a lucrative contract, were all cited as examples of Jones' missteps.

The Cowboys' Future

Part 5/5:

With Prescott sidelined, the co-hosts believe the Cowboys are now in a position to receive a high draft pick, which could provide an opportunity to truly assess the state of the roster and make necessary changes. However, they expressed concerns about the team's ability to attract top coaching candidates, given the uncertainty surrounding the quarterback position and the overall state of the franchise.

In the end, the overarching narrative emerging from the Cowboys' struggles is one of a once-proud organization that has lost its way, with the responsibility falling squarely on the shoulders of Jerry Jones and his leadership.

Oh man....Bass missed the PAT 6-0 Buffalo

Bills D is on fire right now!

Why did McDermott challenge that? Awful challenge.

Overcoaching

someone told him to challenge that lol odd stuff

Amari COOOOOOPER!

Letting that guy go was one of a list of epic fails by Jones.

he's so under rated!

14-13 Chiefs.

Bills need to double dip.

Plenty of game left but have to clean up some things.

Biggest issue with this #Bills team...one part of their team shows up. never D, O and special teams at once.

Can’t do deep into the postseason not clicking on all cylinders.

Week 11 of the NFL Season with a handful of very intriguing matchups. The Steelers versus Ravens and Chiefs versus the Bills as probably the top two games of the day.

My Cowboys are playing Monday Night at home against the Texans but it’s safe to say my Boys are done. I don’t see them getting back into a position to make the playoffs.

For NFL Week 11, here's an overview of some notable players' statuses based on injury reports and expected participation:

Players In:

  • Jaylen Warren for the Pittsburgh Steelers
  • Davante Adams for the Las Vegas Raiders
  • Michael Pittman Jr. for the Indianapolis Colts
  • Jaire Alexander for the Green Bay Packers
  • Tee Higgins for the Cincinnati Bengals

Players Out:

  • Dalton Kincaid for the Buffalo Bills
  • Sam LaPorta for the Detroit Lions
  • Trevor Lawrence for the Jacksonville Jaguars
  • Tank Bigsby for the Jacksonville Jaguars
  • Kendall Fuller for the Washington Commanders
  • L'Jarius Sneed for the Kansas City Chiefs

Questionable:

  • George Kittle for the San Francisco 49ers
  • Amari Cooper for the Cleveland Browns
  • CeeDee Lamb for the Dallas Cowboys

Titans holding the Vikings scoreless so far.

Scratch that. Vikings with a TD immediately after I posted them being blanked 😂

Tucker has missed two field goals for the Ravens as the Steelers hold them to no score so far, but Steelers only have three points themselves.

It took almost two full quarters before the Jets got their first FIRST DOWN! 😮

The Lions are looking good to winning their eighth straight game as they are wrecking the Jaguars.

Part 1/5:

The Ravens and Steelers Renew Their Fierce Rivalry

The Ravens and Steelers are set to renew their long-standing rivalry today, and the stakes could not be higher. These two AFC North foes have played each other 52 times since 2000, with the total point differential between them amounting to just 3 points.

This will be the 36th meeting between head coaches Mike Tomlin and John Harbaugh, making it the second-most matchup between two head coaches in NFL history. With the Ravens sitting at an 80% chance to win the division if they win today, and the Steelers at 62% if they come out on top, the outcome of this game could have major implications on the AFC North race.

Steelers Captain Cam Heyward Expects a Physical, Trash-Talking Affair

Part 2/5:

Steelers captain Cam Heyward emphasized that this rivalry "runs through Pittsburgh and Baltimore" and that you "can't run away from that." Heyward told Kimberly Martin that the Steelers players are expecting "some trash talking" and a "highly contested physical game" today.

Heyward also noted that these games between the Ravens and Steelers often come down to "one possession," underscoring the razor-thin margins that have defined this rivalry over the years. The Steelers are hoping their new quarterback, Russell Wilson, can provide a boost to their offense and help them come out on top in these close battles.

Russell Wilson's Deep Ball and Preparation Key for Steelers

Part 3/5:

Wilson's ability to connect on deep passes has been a major asset since taking over as the Steelers' starting QB. He ranks 3rd in the NFL in completion percentage on throws over 15 yards downfield, and has the highest QBR on those deep shots since becoming the starter in Week 7.

Steelers players have praised Wilson's leadership and preparation, with Heyward describing him as a "methodical monster" when it comes to getting ready. Tight end Pat Freiermuth also highlighted how Wilson's 13 years of experience and Super Bowl pedigree have had a positive impact on the team's young offense.

Can Wilson's Deep Ball Overcome Baltimore's Struggling Defense?

Part 4/5:

The Ravens' defense has been historically bad against the pass this season, which could play right into the Steelers' hands and Wilson's strengths. Analysts like Rex Ryan believe the Steelers should look to attack Baltimore deep with their talented receiving corps of George Pickens and Mike Williams.

However, others like Greeny caution that the Ravens may try to take away those deep shots and force Wilson to beat them with intermediate and short throws, an area where he has struggled at times this season. The Steelers' ability to establish the run game with Najee Harris could also be crucial in opening up the passing attack.

Part 5/5:

Ultimately, this game has all the makings of another classic clash in this storied rivalry. With so much on the line for both teams, the outcome could come down to which quarterback - Wilson or Lamar Jackson - makes the decisive plays when it matters most.

!summarize

Part 1/4:

The Battle for AFC Supremacy: Bills vs. Chiefs

The highly anticipated matchup between the Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs is set to take center stage this Sunday. With both teams vying for the top spot in the AFC, the outcome of this game could have significant implications for the postseason.

The Bills, led by the dynamic Josh Allen, are the favorites heading into this contest. Allen has been playing smart, disciplined football, making wise decisions and limiting turnovers. His growth as a quarterback has been a key factor in the Bills' success this season.

Part 2/4:

However, the Chiefs, led by the ever-dominant Patrick Mahomes, cannot be counted out. Despite not blowing out opponents as they have in the past, the Chiefs have found a way to win close games week after week. Mahomes and the Chiefs have a certain aura of invincibility, and a victory for them would cement their status as the team to beat in the AFC.

"If Kansas City wins, it's like the coronation. They're going undefeated, they never have to leave our ahead in January, and who's going to beat them?" - Analyst

The history between these two teams adds an extra layer of intrigue to the matchup. The Chiefs have had the Bills' number in the playoffs, but Josh Allen has proven to be a formidable opponent, putting up impressive numbers against the Chiefs in the postseason.

Part 3/4:

One key aspect of the game that could prove pivotal is the battle in the trenches. The Bills' strong running game, led by their offensive line, will be tested against the Chiefs' stout run defense, which has been a strength of their team. If the Bills can establish the run and take pressure off of Allen, it could give them the edge they need to come out on top.

"If we come in here on Monday and the bills won, I would guess that that's like 140-150 rushing yards for Buffalo with a couple of rushing touchdowns. If we come in here on Monday and the Chiefs won by a touchdown or more, I'm thinking that it's less than 100 rushing yards for Buffalo." - Analyst

Part 4/4:

Ultimately, this game is a must-watch for any NFL fan. The clash of two of the league's elite teams, with the potential for a playoff preview, promises to be an exciting and closely contested affair. While the Chiefs' track record and Mahomes' dominance make them a tempting pick, the Bills' home-field advantage and Josh Allen's growth as a quarterback could give them the edge they need to secure the victory.

Part 1/3:

Upset Alert: Week 11 Picks

The Standings and Rules

The hosts review the current standings, with Coach and Greg stuck in the high 30s for points, while the challenger has only 1 point. The challenger acknowledges that a 13-point deficit is not insurmountable, and there is still plenty of time left in the competition.

The Challenger's Upset Pick: Kansas City Chiefs

The challenger declares that his upset pick for the week is the Kansas City Chiefs. He explains that this is a "win-win" situation, as if the Chiefs win, they will get another point, but if they lose, it's not a big deal either. The challenger is confident in this pick and believes it is the best upset alert he has chosen so far.

The Challenger's Other Picks

Part 2/3:

The challenger also considers picking the Jacksonville Jaguars as an upset, but ultimately goes with the Atlanta Falcons over the Denver Broncos. He cites Kirk Cousins' recent struggles and the potential for an emotional letdown from the Broncos after a tough loss.

The Host's Picks

The host agrees with the challenger's take on the potential emotional impact of the Broncos' recent loss. He also believes the Cincinnati Bengals could upset the Los Angeles Chargers, but ultimately goes with the Atlanta Falcons as well, citing the potential for more points.

The Patani Phil of Football's Upset Pick

Part 3/3:

The Patani Phil of Football, a regular contributor, makes his upset pick for the week: the New England Patriots over the Los Angeles Rams. He cites the Patriots' improved offensive line, the Rams' struggles in the red zone, and the potential for the Rams to be affected by the short week and cross-country travel.

The host acknowledges the Patani Phil's strong track record of picking upsets, and the Patani Phil defends his pick, highlighting the Patriots' recent success against the spread and their history of success in Orchard Park against the Bills.

How are the Giants looking on this Sunday?

Shitty as always I am sure.

@jimmy.adames maybe Jerry will want to acquire Daniel Jones to carry the Cowboys through the rest of the season. He needs a change of scenery.

I believe the G-Men are on a bye week. Saquon is sending them flowers 🤪

The Giants need to get more bye weeks on the schedule.

17 sounds about right.

Three minutes to go and Packers take the lead back from Da Bears.

Jets up five with less than three minutes to go.

Packers fail to get the two point conversion and only lead by one.

I’m ready to jump into @jongolson threadcast of the Bills and Chiefs if he’s coming by @taskmaster4450le

I will fill it with Patriot videos. He will love that.

Early games are in the witching hour: “where wins become losses and losses become wins”

Football so bad, I am not focusing upon St John's basketball.

They beat Pitino's son and New Mexcico.

The Bears are ready to kick a game winning field goal with three seconds remaining

Steelers go up 8 over the Ravens

The Jets being the Jets blew it and lose to the Colts by one. What a wreck.

Second half games are starting to trickle in.

Seahawks versus 49ers is always a good matchup.

Falcons versus Broncos should be a good one.

Lamar and the Ravens are driving with a little over one minute down 8

TOUCHDOWN BALTIMORE and need a two point conversion to tie it up

STEELERS quashes the two point Baltimore try.

BO NIX runs in a TD and the Broncos draws first blood 🩸

Steelers up two with 1:06 remaining and the Ravens punting and not going for the onside kick.

Steelers on lol the clock mode running the ball.

Current three games in progress

Steelers go into Baltimore and handle their business and they get the first down to lock in the win.

This was the first game into Week 11 that the Steelers plays a team in their division 🤯

George Kittle out today. The 49ers have been decimated with injuries this season.

Chiefs with the ball first!

Ahh Damn 49ers with a TD

Yessir! Samuel and Cooper with some big first downs!

Horrible end to that drive by the Seahawks

Notable win for the Rams who are still in the thick of it.

Broncos looking good against the Falcons so far. Falcons have taken a step back after looking very good until recently.

Hankins intercepts Purdy

Khalil Shakir is my spirit animal!!!

Awesome play between Josh and Khalil

and then nothing after it. good d by the chiefs though on 3rd down

That D has that team on top.

Niners D lookin’ stout after that Purdy pick

Quick 4 and out

Not having a great time on this drive...

Yea, Chiefs made it a game

Yeah.....That was inevitable 7-6 chiefs

That extra point miss looks ugly but plenty of time left to this game. Will be a nail biter @jongolson

not a good idea to leave points on the field

Not against the Chiefs especially

Tight game between the Niners and Seahawks heading into the second half soon @jeffjagoe

Big catch Knox!!!

Good way to get back on track knocking down the camera man Jongo lol

Urgh

I mean does not look like an official catch?

Broncos are spanking the Falcons 21-6 with 25 seconds to go in the first half. Bo Nix is crushing it.

James Cook!!!! Automatic! 13-7 Bills!

the kid is awesome!

Von with a sack...Special teams great return...Let's goooooo Buffalo!!!!

That was awful

The KC Offence just looks automatic.

and they get Pacheco back next week.

Bills killing themselves....INT instead of FG...missed pAT

Not a good way to go into the second half Jongo.

I hate football.

Horrible interception throw by Geno. Geez.

Seahawks D is playing the Niners tough

Broncos are carving up the Falcons in all facets.

Shocker...Missed blatant facemask penalty.

Epic Fail

it's becoming an issue for sure for the league

Second half wont be stressful at all....

Second half starts now!!!

Broncos still holding the Falcons at six points.

Bills D did their job!

Broncos total yards is almost double of the Falcons 😮

Buffalo offense is doo doo right now

Second half lagging

31-6 Broncos it’s getting uglier for the Falcons.

Bills defense showed up!

Bills run game is non existent

You are preaching to a Cowboys’ fan’s choir 🤪

I really like Khalil Shakir.

A Michael Penix, Jr sighting. They bring in the rookie as Kirk Cousins did nothing today and the Broncos pretty much has the game in hand.

That being said...Bills usually beat the Chiefs in the regular season. The game they need is in the playoffs.

Witching hour.....Kinda sorta? @jimmy.adames

Last game left before the night matchup.

Big Win for Seattle over the 49ers 🏈🔥

7-3 Chargers with the Bengals trying to get it going but with Jim Harbaugh coaching the Bolts now it’s not the same choking Chargers.

That's why I don't watch such kind of movies, I am not able to keep myself from such horrible scenes.

Having 44,715.35 Hive Power at 100% Power my Vote amounts of $0.47 in value. That's a decent amount to spread some love around and build for the future!

Working on a blog post after a long time. Feels weird lol

Gotta stop slacking

some days we slack you're doing perfectly well bro. Awaiting your threads 💪

C'mon, you can do it! 💪

Things I’m excited about today:

  • I got some crazy new pants that make me feel like more of a wizard 🧙‍♂️

  • Designer let me try on all his wacky clothes. I got to see the future me. Insane 🔥

  • Flea market today, my first time doing it alone since partner is visiting hometown 🧶

  • Two months ago I tagged my favorite Japanese band and a music festival in Uganda and a month later they announced they’d be playing. Yesterday was their performance and the videos are incredible. I have no idea if that was my doing or not, there is a chance (?) it’s just a huge coincidence. This only reinforces the magic of life and the idea that your actions make a difference. 🦋

  • Connecting with a interesting artists from Africa. Last year Ghana, this year Uganda. I have no idea what purpose this serves, I just want to see Africa have the artistic, spiritual, and economic revolution that the wind is telling me it will have and I plan on taking part in the magic in whatever small way I can 🌬️

I hope the flea market thing went well since you had to do it alone. I don't think I've ever been to the market alone before

I sold $400 in hats! Good day!

damn I gotta get some hat selling done, didn't know it could be this cool a business. Congratulations on this bro, one day you're going to tell me you just sold $400K in hats😁

lol I don’t think hat selling is some kind of lucrative business. My girlfriend likes to make them and she’s getting better at it so she was able to raise her price and I’m pretty good at selling I guess 😝 I just like talking to people

this is a perfect relationship based business man. Like for real I'm going straight to my girlfriend to make something so I can seek it 🤣🤣🤣

dude you've really experienced a lot of cool stuff 🤩. Your favorite band and seeing the future you. I barely wear suits I'mma try it and see the future me🤣

I don’t own a suit, just trying to find the right wizard robes 🙃. Thank you!

I hope you get the perfect wizard robes man. You look good in robes

It's amazing how we derive joy from things that may not make sense to others. The beautiful thing about life is creating memories we can reminisce on any time and any day that would bring back smiles and laughter and the sense of adding value to the life of others.

You actually lived your life today, full of fun.

Sounds like someone is having a good time

I mean most of the weekend was spend listening to really fast Ugandan electronic music while procrastinating my translation work but there were social and active parts too 🤣

So you had fast fan 😂

Part 1/5:

The Age of Intelligence: A Techno-Optimistic Vision

The Best Time Yet to Start a Technology Company

This is an exciting time to be starting a technology company. With each successive technological revolution, the potential for companies to be more amazing and impactful has grown. When things are moving slowly, big companies have the edge. But when a major shift like the internet or mobile revolution happens, that's when upstarts have their edge.

We are currently in the midst of another such transformative period. Sam Altman believes this is the best time yet to start a technology company. The reason is the rapid progress being made in artificial intelligence and the potential for this technology to unlock incredible capabilities.

Part 2/5:

The Promise of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)

Altman and his team at OpenAI have been boldly pursuing the development of AGI, or artificial general intelligence, at a time when many in the field thought it was impossible. They faced criticism for this ambitious goal, but they were convinced that the underlying technology was advancing rapidly and that they could make significant progress.

The key insights that drove OpenAI were the belief that deep learning would continue to scale and improve dramatically, and that unsupervised learning and reinforcement learning were the keys to unlocking AGI. While many in the field were skeptical, Altman and his team were willing to bet big on these ideas.

The Compounding Progress of AI

Part 3/5:

Altman believes that the work being done in AI is compounding rapidly, with the potential for dramatic progress in the coming years. He sees a path where the rate of improvement seen over the last three years could continue for the next 3, 6, or 9 years. This could result in AI systems becoming incredibly capable within the next thousand days.

The scaling of deep learning architectures like GPT has been a major driver of this progress. Altman is amazed by how quickly these language models have advanced, to the point where they can now be effectively used in real-world applications. He sees this as just the beginning, with much more potential for growth and capability.

The Age of Abundance

Part 4/5:

Altman is extremely techno-optimistic about the future, envisioning an "age of abundance" where we solve major challenges like climate change, establish space colonies, and uncover the fundamental laws of physics. The key enablers for this are the expected breakthroughs in abundant, low-cost energy and the development of artificial general intelligence.

With truly abundant energy and intelligence, the physical constraints that have limited human progress could be unlocked. Robotics and language AI could automate away most physical labor, allowing for rapid material progress that benefits everyone, not just the wealthy. This could usher in an era of unprecedented human flourishing.

The Power of Conviction and Peer Groups

Part 5/5:

Altman credits much of his success to the techno-optimistic culture fostered by Y Combinator, which encouraged founders to think bigger and have conviction in their ideas, even when they seemed implausible. He also emphasizes the importance of finding the right peer group - a community of like-minded individuals who believe in the power of technology to transform the world.

This willingness to bet big on ambitious ideas, even in the face of skepticism, has been a hallmark of Altman's approach, from his early days at Y Combinator to the founding of OpenAI. He believes that this kind of conviction, combined with the compounding progress of AI, could lead to breakthroughs that dramatically improve the human condition in the coming years.

Part 1/12:

The Bursting of China's Lithium Battery Bubble

The Decline of a Once-Booming Industry

A Chinese investment project worth nearly a billion dollars has now turned into a ghost town. This lithium battery factory, covering 300 acres, was once one of the most notable companies in the area, with an annual output valued in the billions. The facility had it all - a technical research center, exhibition hall, office building, and factory spaces across 16 buildings. Now, the whole site stands abandoned.

Part 2/12:

"Look, the entire park is empty. We used to have thousands of people here," laments a man from Jangsu. Nearby, another lithium battery factory spanning 100 acres with seven or eight buildings and 50 acres of vacant land has also closed down. Despite their shutdown, the factories' equipment remains in fairly good condition.

This situation reflects the broader shutdowns in China's lithium battery industry this year. Insiders report that the entire new energy sector is under immense pressure, with declining orders and factory closures becoming the norm.

The Rise and Fall of China's Lithium Battery Boom

Part 3/12:

The industry's journey has gone through stages of growth, boom, and ultimately bust. In 2009, both central and local governments launched dual subsidies for the electric vehicle industry, kickstarting China's lithium battery sector. Initially, local governments rushed to launch projects, and lithium battery plants sprang up everywhere.

In 2020, the Chinese government's dual carbon targets fueled a rapid rise in energy storage projects, creating another surge in new facilities. However, by 2022, the industry faced overcapacity, with enough batteries for 2 million vehicles unsold, equaling about 100 gigawatt-hours.

Part 4/12:

From 2022 to 2024, over 700 projects, each worth over a billion dollars, were hastily started, totaling an investment of 3.5 trillion yen. This led to an even greater surplus, with China's lithium battery production capacity reaching 3.3 times the demand in 2023. Capacity utilization dropped from 76% in 2022 to just 50% in the first half of 2024.

The Cascading Crisis

The lithium battery industry is now facing a full-blown crisis, impacting the entire supply chain from upstream raw materials to downstream demand. The crisis first showed up in the upstream raw material market, with lithium carbonate prices plummeting by 80% from their peak in November 2022.

Part 5/12:

This situation is no coincidence, but rather the inevitable outcome of China's predatory economic strategies to undercut competitors on the global market. The Chinese government manipulated lithium prices to create a temporary advantage, forcing Western competitors into losses. However, this also caused domestic lithium companies to cut back production or shut down entirely.

The difficulties extend beyond lithium suppliers, as essential materials like separators and electrolytes also struggle with plummeting orders and stockpiles that haven't sold for 6 to 8 months. This distress is reflected in the financial reports of several lithium battery material suppliers, with inventory surging over 100% year-on-year and revenue dropping by 20 to 30%.

Part 6/12:

The situation is even worse for midstream manufacturers, with revenue for 107 listed lithium battery companies in the first quarter of 2024 falling by 18% year-over-year, and net profits slashed in half. Downstream demand continues to shrink, with growth in sales for new energy vehicles in China slowing to below 20% in the first quarter of 2024, far lower than the over 90% growth rate seen in the same period in 2023.

The Vicious Cycle of Decline

Part 7/12:

This breakdown throughout the industry chain is driving the industry into a severe deflationary spiral. The crash in upstream raw material prices forces suppliers to cut production to reduce losses, while overcapacity in the midstream sector worsens company losses. Shrinking downstream demand leads to a steady drop in orders, and export barriers add further strain, leading to a vicious cycle that's difficult to break.

Even industry giants like CATL have seen revenue decline for three consecutive quarters, with a 35% year-over-year drop in net profit in the third quarter of this year. Smaller companies are facing even greater challenges, with some declaring bankruptcy and leaving behind debts and abandoned projects.

Global Shifts and Restructuring

Part 8/12:

As the Chinese lithium battery industry grapples with its crisis, the global market is undergoing significant changes. The United States, Japan, and Europe are all making strategic moves to reduce their reliance on Chinese products and develop domestic supply chains.

In the US, Nevada-based Lionel is investing over $1 billion to build the world's first large-scale lithium-sulfur battery production facility, a revolutionary technology that eliminates dependency on resources controlled by China. Japan has also seen a breakthrough in battery technology, with a new lithium iron oxide-based battery developed by Hokkaido University.

Part 9/12:

Europe is also taking steps to establish its own lithium mines and reduce its 97% reliance on China for lithium supply. The EU has also introduced stricter environmental and safety standards, leading to a 45% year-over-year drop in China's battery exports to Europe and the US.

These actions by democratic nations are fundamentally challenging China's dominance in the global lithium battery supply chain, making it increasingly difficult for Chinese companies to expand internationally.

The Reckoning of China's Economic Model

Part 10/12:

The bursting of the lithium battery bubble exemplifies the failure of achievement-driven projects in China. These projects, marketed as engines of local economic growth, have often been marred by favoritism and government-business collusion. Local officials eager for short-term achievements allocated substantial public funds and resources to companies with close connections, while companies took advantage of subsidies and tax breaks to aggressively expand production lines and inflate investment figures.

Part 11/12:

Ultimately, instead of fostering industry upgrades, the money lined private pockets and further enriched local elites. The result is that these lithium battery projects, once hailed as part of the new energy revolution, have been left into disarray, with high-end equipment worth millions sold off at low prices to overseas buyers.

This situation highlights a key feature of China's economic development model: rapid expansion and short-term gains followed by economic fallout and abandoned projects, company struggles, and labor issues. As Western countries reduce reliance on Chinese products and Gen Z workers resist high-stress, low-pay jobs, companies face a growing struggle to recruit and retain employees, making high-end manufacturing even harder to achieve.

Part 12/12:

The wave of closures in the lithium battery industry may be just the beginning of a larger economic unraveling in China as the global economy and domestic demand continue to lag. The Chinese government's attempts to mask structural issues with policy intervention merely delay the crisis without addressing the root causes. As economic pressures mount, China faces a harsh reality: the once-vaunted economic miracle is rapidly unraveling, and the Chinese model of growth heavily reliant on subsidies and achievement-driven projects has reached its limits.

Stories like these scare me a lot because it proves to me that no matter how high a business rises, it can still fall flat to the ground

I learned new term from a friend of mine. He says things can be aggressively American.
