We need to remember that government doesn't have $$ of its own. Every unit of money a government has comes from the taxpayer. This is why it's an outrage to discover that tax money was used for purposes contrary to what the people expect.
Totally get that tax money deserves careful allocation. The challenge lies in creating a consensus about what's best for everyone, even if that means funding programs that some might not individually support
