A nintendo 64 emulator on the Bitcoin blockchain! Thanks to the Ordinals!

in LeoFinance11 months ago

Ninjalerts has announced the registration of a Nintendo 64 emulator on Bitcoin using the Ordinals protocol. This isn't the development team's first foray into blockchain registration; last January, they successfully registered a Super Nintendo (SNES) emulator, the predecessor to the Nintendo 64.

Trevor Owens, CEO of Ninjalerts, revealed that Pizza Ninjas accomplished this feat using the new Brotli compression on the Ordinals protocol, resulting in an approximately 80% reduction in file size. Owens stated, "I am pleased to announce that Pizza Ninjas has successfully registered a Nintendo 64 emulator on Bitcoin! Initially, we didn't think it was feasible, but thanks to the recent implementation of Brotli compression on Ordinals, registering a more complex system like the N64 - along with its games - is now possible, and the result is extremely convincing."

"We chose the N64 because it's the first and only non-DRM console for 4 players! This means we can develop the interface and multiplayer function so as to find a way to use WebRTC and allow four people on the same WiFi network to play online in a way that will work forever," added the CEO of Ninjalerts.

What's the impact on the Bitcoin network? Brotli, developed by Google, offers efficient compression and is also open-source. Owens exemplifies the weight of a game by using James Bond Goldeneye 64 as an example. Thanks to Brotli, the registration of the game on Ordinals is only 3.15 MB instead of 12.4 MB. Given the significant impact of each megabyte on the decentralized network, such achievements become feasible.

However, it's important to note that registering at 15 satoshis per vbyte would cost $6,000, while at 100 satoshis, it would amount to $40,000. Owens commented, "Although the cost is significantly higher than the increase in network fees, Brotli still falls within a feasibility range, provided there is sufficient demand. We decided to take advantage of this opportunity when mempool fees were low to register most of the files, as we anticipate that fees will become very high after the April halving."

Thus, the realization of this small-yet-grand dream lies in the hands of the community. Considering that the imminent halving could raise fees again and make this much more complicated in the future.

A historical console. For those unfamiliar or those who wish to revisit a part of video game history, the Nintendo 64, developed by Nintendo, was launched in the United States in September 1996 and arrived in Italy in March 1997. It was the evolution of the legendary Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and was the last major game console to use cartridges as the main format for storing titles.

Time magazine named the Nintendo 64 the "Machine of the Year" in 1996, and it is undoubtedly one of the most popular game consoles of all time. The best-selling game for the Nintendo 64 is Super Mario 64, also launched in the United States in September 1996.

Let's recap some of the distinctive features of the console.

  • It was the first console to feature 3D graphics.
  • It was the first system to have a controller with an analog stick.
  • The Nintendo 64 has nearly 400 games.
  • Initially, Nintendo intended to call it Ultra 64.
  • The "64" refers to the 64-bit processor.

Production of the Nintendo 64 ceased at the end of April 2002. Since then, only second-hand consoles have been available, and the fan market is very active and thriving. In this regard, the console's popularity makes it relatively easy to find games even twenty years after production ceased.

Alternatively, it has long been possible to play with the N64 with the help of software emulators. Now, it's also possible on Bitcoin.
