Its really frustrating and less motivational for children, when their parent compare them with other people, instead of encouraging them to do better, and being a shoulder for the children to lean on, in times of need.
Self comparison on be other hand can have a huge impact on an individual.
Unlike the parental judgmental mode of comparison, self comparison can have a very good impact, all dependent on the reason/emotional state behind the comparison.
Comparison can have both a positive impact on a person, and a negative impact as well.
