Seven Years On The Hive Blockchain

Yesterday (01/017/2025) while scrolling my blog (@rentmoney) and the blogs of others I just so happen to notice something. That something was the fact that I have been part of this amazing and interesting community known as Hive since January of 2018. The current date is January of 2025. Making this month my Hive Birthday. That is a total of seven years since I first created my account. No small amount of time to continuously or even sparingly spend somewhere. Within that time frame I have went MIA for months at a time. It's likely if we were to tally all the consecutive weeks/months I went with little interaction it could total a good two years of that seven. Balance is the key to everything and its ok to take time away from things to return with a fresh new outlook or to continue business as usual. Of course my thoughts didn't stop there. I also pondered my success or lack there of in regards to my blog. Success now there's an interesting word. How do we define it. There is multiple ways of course. More on that later but for now I'd like to share some more of my not so random thoughts.

Success What Is It?

Other thoughts such as reviewing my Hive / HBD holdings and weighing them against "success". Thoughts such as having the mindset that such holdings is a direct reflection of my growth here on Hive. Such is also a reflection of the support my blog gives to the blockchain as a whole compared to someone who might continuously cashout any earnings. I then factored in my other Hive Holdings such as my Splinterland collection (NFT's , SPS, LAND, Ect.). The last thing I pondered is am I supporting the growth of others. This last one is an important one. I concluded that at the very least I have tried to. Such actions as participating and supporting upcoming apps either through delegation or asset purchasing (Holozing being a clear example) would fall under this category. Another being the creation of small but meaningful giveaways that create safe havens for an easy interaction. Too often us O.G.'s of the Hive platform forget how hard it might be to start here. Even more so if you are someone who has stumbled on this amazing place from WEB2 wondering around not sure what to do. When such people stumble upon a giveaway post that only requires a comment its an in to stress free interaction. I once was that WEB2 user lost in the world of WEB3. Such giveaways are frowned on by some but there's a place for everything and everything has its place.

Success Did Rentmoney Accomplish It

So based on my above thoughts did Rentmoney accomplish "Success" with my hive profile. Well if we look strictly at the financial side of things using only the main currencies of the Hive Blockchain (HIVE/ HBD holdings) the answer becomes a clear No. I have been on the Hive blockchian for seven years and only have 16,500 Hive Tokens Staked. Considering I have never powered down to sell for fiat (Yuck) that isn't that great of a number. My HBD Holdings are at roughly $2,000 HBD. Again not a large amount when compared to the seven years being on the chain. Rentmoney also holds roughly 2,500 liquid Hive and about 1000 Swap.Hive as well. Even with those factored in the answer is still a clear "No". However luckily that is not how Rentmoney factors financial success here on the Hive Blockchain as there are many working parts. Including but not limited to any second layer tokens held from communities like LeoFinance or assets held from the many apps built on Hive (Splinterlands, Holozing ect.). If I factor in those held assets then the answer becomes a clear Yes. I was here for the NFT boom and Splinterland assets were at an all time high. For anyone that was a holder of Splinterland assets at that time you became a financial success here on HIVE. If you held and didn't sell during that time to later experience the downside: that doesn't take away that past success. It just means you showed support by holding your Hive Blockchain assets. Factoring that in I would conclude that my hive profile @rentmoney indeed was and potentially still is a financial success with allot of upside to go.

Financial Success Isn't The End Goal

Of course above we talked about Financial success but that's not nearly as important as activity associated with ones blog or eventual concluding message. To run a blog one needs viewers. If you don't have viewers then its more of a personal diary than a social blog. This leads me to my definition of success on the Hive Blockchain as it pertains to ones blog profile. For me success on the blogging side of things isn't the amount earned but the amount of interactions one can generate. The amount of views one can get on their created content. In the WEB2 world being successful at those things will lead to financial success because of things like well placed ads that generate income for the author per view/click and impression. Here on WEB3 that isn't always the case do to the fact we can't attach ads to our blog spot. Instead we get rewarded via our viewers who interact with our blog by the means of voting on it. An interesting system indeed. This means that trying to use rewards as a base to determine if one's Hive Blog is successful is a poor measurement. One can be getting 10X the views, comments and interactions as someone who might only be getting a handful of views but more rewards due to the fact whales noticed them and not you yet. That's just the nature of things here on Hive. So don't be down in the dumps if you aren't being rewarded for your content. Know that rewards are not the be all and end all to running a successful blog.

Personal Success: Mental Health

Here is something I don't see talked about allot. Blogging can take a toll on ones mental health. Both positively and negatively. If your blog or anything else for that matter is taking a toll on your mental health its time to take a break. I'm lucky enough to be on the opposite end of that spectrum. Blogging helps my mental health and therefore my overall general health. This trumps all else so even if there was no interaction on my blog, even if no rewards were attainable, Success would still be there. To conclude I would have to say that my time here on the Hive Blockchain was well spent. I attained knowledge about blogging, content creating, blockchains, cryptocurrency and many other things here on HIVE that I likely wouldn't of attained elsewhere. I was almost a complete newbie to all those aforementioned things before coming here. Hive has expanded my knowledge and skill set of all that and much more while allowing me to interact with other bloggers who's blogs I routinely visit for a multitude of reasons. If that isn't success I don't know what is. I look forward to seeing what the next seven years might detail. I have a feeling that the landscape of cryptocurrency is very close to exploding. I'll be here on the Hive Blockchain posting away when it does.

Thanks or reading. See you at our next post :)

I just noticed that we both joined Hive (Welp . . . Steem at the time) at pretty much the same time. You have been here a month older than me :D

What an amazing journey it has been and much more to come!

!BBH

Its been an interesting ride for sure.

And to think; we are all still early.

Congratulations on your Hive birthday! I like to make an annual post evaluating my actions, and just like you, I have noticed that the collateral gains are more important than the simple financial accumulation. And writing my almost daily blog is part of my self-therapy. I have written about this in my series of complaints about life "ramblings".
I hope to see you on your next birthday!

Thanks for taking the time to comment.
I'll have to head on over to your blog to visit your "ramblings" series.

Congratulations on 7 years!
I think mine is 7 years this August.

I find success is being able to give good content to the community, enjoy what you do and be able to make the money along the way as a bonus including what you earn from those earnings!

I have on and off powered down and sold and bought again through thr Hive and HBD or second layer tokens, I find a week and a half onward I can start to really grow again in HP and will be hopefully keeping, the HBD growing throughout the year. Rough times and a lot to get through in my life but I love Hive and the community so much.

We all succeed in our own way.

Agreed, that's a great definition. Enjoyment, yet another form of success.

I don't fault anyone for cashing out their earnings. For some reason it has a bad stigma attached to it but it should be expected. When WEB2 users come knocking that is what the majority of them will be doing. Not to mention the enjoyment of paying for something with blog earnings is much greater than paying with already acquired funds. I experienced such with poker winnings but haven't cashed out Hive yet. Whatever is ailing you in life I hope you overcome it and things pick up for you.

It is expected for sure, people coming for the games will be withdrawing, but when they still stick around and grow as well then it helps see the community keep growing.

Cheers I always keep working on improving personal life issues

Happy Anniversary! I just celebrated my 7th last week.

Thanks,

Congrats on your 7th.

I agree about the mental health aspect... sometimes I need to get thoughts out and blogging about them basically means I can flesh out the thought and then put a lid on it at the end.

I think where mental health suffers is when people feel the need to post in order to keep their autovotes, and then it becomes a chore and a burden.

Sounds like a good way to do things to me :)

For sure, one shouldn't force a post out for autovotes. Speaking of autovotes mine seem to have dimished greatly ever since the hiccup of the blockchain removing our banners and displaying our old ones. My old one showcased a logo from a previous linked chain. I wonder how long the old banner was showing before I noticed. I also wonder if the hiccup reverted auto-votes for some accounts. Today when browsing hive as a guest I noticed my Post Headers and preview for contents of each post didn't match. I was shown previews for posts I created weeks ago with current post headers. The go to explanation and answer is nodes acting up. You notice anything out of order with your blog?

I did notice that!

I didn't notice it on my own posts... but I was confused about some of the preview text I saw on other posts that did not at all match the actual content of the posts.

I'm sorry you've seen a reduction in your autovotes, that's frustrating. I imagine it kind of ebbs and flows as people get distracted by other things or cash out or whatever. I expect a lot of whales will try to cash out in 2025.

Happy Hive Anniversary! 7 years on Hive is a great milestone! Congratulations

Well done, I also joined about 7 years ago.

The fact that we're still around is rare and legendary. Here's a sad fact of Hive:

"Over the years hive had had some 2.5 million accounts. Yet there might be under 8000 active users."

What do you think is going on?

Happy Hive Day!! 7 years is a long time, keep going! 🙂

For me personally, the goal on Hive is not financial success, too. For me, it's more about learning as much as possible about things that interest me and exchanging ideas. And Hive is a great place to do that in my opinion.

Even in the financial part alone, with those numbers I would still consider it a win. Happy Hiveversary!
