In conversation with my wife's nephew the other day, he was talking about his business degree and the subjects he is interested in. He has designs on being an "entrepreneur" and likes the logo planning, the marketing and advertising side of things - the relatively useless stuff, at least at the high level they cover. What I suggested was that (especially since he is crypto bullish) is that he adds as many accounting, statistics and data analysis courses he can.
But they are boring!
Yes.
Ever noticed how the things that end up making people a lot of money are pretty well boring subject matter that takes a lot of learning and consideration, as well as a lot of time to develop? Ever noticed how economics is presented as something that people don't really need to know in order to function and is delivered in a way that disconnects the concepts of it to the effects it has on our everyday lives?
"Boring" is where all the value is.
People imagine that the stock exchange is all Gordon Gekko, but the reality is that it is in the numbers, in the analysis, in the boring, no-one-wants-to-read, put-me-to-sleep, black and white.
But, reading through some Gekko quotes, there is some insight there for a movie released in 1987:
Sure, the infamous:
Greed, for lack of a better word, is good.
But there are others:
Greed captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit.
You got ninety percent of the American public out there with little or no net worth.
Now you’re not naive enough to think we’re living in a democracy, are you buddy? It’s the free market. And you’re a part of it.
I create nothing. I own.
What’s worth doing is worth doing for money.
And this gem:
It’s not about the money. It’s about the game between people.
And I like this one:
It’s not always the most popular person who gets the job done.
It sounds exiting and it sounds like greed really is the secret sauce of success, but there are a couple other quotes that I will add here that tell of what really is at the heart of success and why so many of us fail financially to be successful:
You stop sending me information, and you start getting me some.
You don’t understand. I wanna be surprised. Astonish me, pal. New info. I don’t care where or how you get it, just get it.
The most valuable commodity I know of is information.
Information.
We are surrounded by it, we have access to it whenever we want and as such, we have devalued it in our own practices because everything is available, every answer. But, we are missing the fact that those answers have already been established, they have already had the information parsed and consolidated - there is very little value left.
Where the value lays is in the collection, analysis and selling of information, or the ability to take what is learned and productize it to gain market entry, position, competitive advantage and brand recognition. This requires understanding of the data available, the ability to analyze, theorize, predict and extrapolate out to a larger audience, or to find a focal point to target.
But, most people aren't interested in the "backend" of data, because it is boring - however the predictions for the future is that the backend data jobs are going to be where employment is available and value is made. And, for those who are working in the frontend, they are going to benefit from understanding how all of these things are connected, because they are going to want to leverage and benefit from the dynamics in play.
But, there is more to boring and boredom in general, because it is in these areas that we tend to become the most creative in thought, where we look for connections and relationships, where we invent the new world. For me personally, I wish I had spent more time in the numbers and less time and energy in the frontend subjects, because it is in those numbers where I spend so much of my time now, trying to predict where the ball is going to be a month, a year or a decade into the future.
I think that one of the problems facing the "youth of today" is that they are never bored, they always have something to occupy their attention - steal their boredom from them. They don't need to look at the world around them and problem solve, because they have a screen in front of their face that has all the answers they need in how to spend their time - except how to make their time count.
Being an entrepreneur is being able to do what others are not willing to do for a few years at least -
People are willing to be entertained.
Have to do different.
Be bored instead.

Idle Brains are very active and basically play vs themselves. The lack of enough boredom can be very dangerous. People keep staking thoughts and emotions in their subconsciousness and become truly mentally restless. That disturbed my creativity and sleep in my mid 20s, until I solved it with a decent amount of meditation.
It is interesting that you mention the sleep thing. When I was mid-20s and early 30s, I had a lot of trouble sleeping also, until I realized what the problem was - I wasn't thinking enough. I consumed a lot, but didn't go deep on much at all and barely created anything. Now - there are no issues whatsoever.
It's very easy to constantly consume something, what an interesting problem.
And, it makes us feel like we are doing something of value whilst consuming, while actually doing nothing at all. Very interesting issue.
Consuming and creating is the exact opposite, but only one of those is putting actual energy into the system.
Consumerism, the killer of creativity.
Good point! I hardly see boredom as a bad thing. Boredom is boring! Not necessarily bad. For starters, it means you have free time to do whatever. You just don't have things to do at the moment. Yeah boredom can feel bad but the opposite is far worse. Being busy is cool. Being too busy and not having time for the things you enjoy (or need!) the most is the real problem.
My dad's response would have been, "Use your brain and find something to do"
Most of us are busy doing a lot that doesn't bring much value to ourselves or anyone else.
It's true, for example, a lot of money is made from trivial and boring things such as social media, but owners of these sites who have the power are the ones who know the mysteries and secrets of these fields as they have studies from all sides and they have all kinds of data. It is not in their interest for the public to know the reality of these sites, as we think, it's made to communicate but in reality it's most valuable than gold because they pay billions of dollars to own, they know that it has an impact and a relation in daily life.
Boredom doesn't accept awareness
Social media is designed to keep us engaged to earn valueless likes and stars, while generating the information needed for the owners to mine and sell to advertisers. Facebook makes over 95% of their income from advertising, Google over 80% - we are being fleeced.
Yes, this is true, and if you tell him why Musk bought Twitter with that huge amount, he will laugh at him, sometimes ignorance of true secret is a great blessing.
Do you know that the 10 richest people in the world have more wealth than the world's population? It's unbelievable stuff
Made me laugh 😁.
Actually, I quite the boring stuff and making sense of all the different pieces. But then I like calculators, too 😂
I wish I was a nerd too!
Really.
I was never a cool kid growing up, but was never smart enough to be a nerd - I think that just makes me a loser! :D
A sweet loser, though 😍
Every woman's dream partner! :P
😘
One of the reasons I want to get back into the support side is to get into the backend of the systems so that I can learn how to operate there a lot more. It’s not glamorous but it’s important and those skills will make me employable in any industry. I love what I’m doing and who I’m working for however I’m not short sighted and foolish enough to think that I’ll be in the same role and company in the next 5-10 years. The firing of people for making personal choices over the last year have shown how little companies care for people so it’s best to do what we can to insulate ourselves and charge these fucks lots of money to do it! Lol
I certainly think boredom is helpful to have because it makes you come up with ways to entertain yourself!
As you know, I work in an IT company, but it is really interesting, because the people who are the most effective in management and sales, have more than a basic understanding of the backend of the product too - they don't know it all, but they have a good working understanding and are able to leverage it in conversation. The least effective are those who are all marketing, no product.
The job climate is rapidly changing and whether it is better or worse, will depend on each of us.
I don't think so. Being bored or boredom makes me unproductivite as stupid things occupy my mind in those times.
Well, I am never bored too :) I always have something to occupy my time, and even I can't spare time for some of them.
That is interesting. What is your intention at those moments though?
There is never enough time!! I have the issue where there are always far too many things on my plate - too many of them are junk food ;)
When I am bored I judge things in my life, compare things especially in past with that of today. Those unnecessary things make my mind busy...
I'm always a bit surprised at how people can sit and watch YouTube for hours on end. I usually only visit the site when I want to see a music video or I need to know how to fix something. Other than that, I just don't find it that entertaining. I wish I had spent some more time learning some of that fundamental stuff too. I kind of feel like I am just winging it most of the time!

I am the same! It is great for troubleshooting content, but what the hell are people watching there otherwise?
Perhaps this is also a bit like being bored - forced into doing something :)
Yeah, I don't know. My nephews watch these gaming "influencers" and to me they are just downright annoying. I simply don't get the draw!

I believe the era we are now will definitely eradicate that idea or mood of been bored because there are so many things to take that mood of where youth can engage in what can bring limelight and excitement to change the mood situation to a positive one with technology leading the way to change that.
But, where they are spending their time has very little personal value - it just takes their mental and time resources.
Honestly, I have never considered boredom to be a good thing. Also, you're certainly right about my generation always having something to steal our attention, because there's always a screen.
For me, boredom doesn't exactly make me creative or productive me, it actually makes me think of everything I could have better about my life.
However, reading this gives me a completely different perspective and I absolutely love it. This was very interesting to read.
Information is something that makes really all the differences, and I think its quite right the fact that, the vital commodity is the flow of information and those having a ready wit can keep their head moved.
Being an entrepreneur is relatively a difficult task, but with integrity, reaching a proper goal would be possible. These quotes says a lot..
At some point, people are going to want to stop giving their information away for free.
Hmm..Thats right I think.
But, anyway without information, life would cease no exist.
Part of the communication is connected with information share and we keep doing this, until death.
But your proposition speaks something sublime, great notion, 💯
Maybe that's why not so many make it big because most people are not into "boring" stuff.

Exactly. They want the glamor and fame, but not have to do the work.
Yes. Everyone wants to be up there and sparkle but not all are willing to stretch their muscles (brain and body) to work.

Totally agree with this. Asides Cryptocurrency and blockchain, programming is a typical example.
Today's generations have access to so many things that, as you say, they have no time to get bored. They get too much "information" all the time. And that makes a distortion. They tend to skip the important things and those that add value many times.
The risk is that it could end up in another kind of boredom which is what comes when you have had so much of everything that nothing interests you anymore.
For my part, I welcome boredom. :)

does staring blankly and lost in thought count as being bored? cos that's what I always do 😂
