Throughout his youth, Turner experienced life on several different plantations. In 1821, he made a daring attempt to escape from the plantation of Samuel Turner, Benjamin’s brother. After spending 30 days in hiding, he returned, convinced he had received a divine sign directing him to come back. It was during this time that he became increasingly involved in religious activities, ultimately emerging as a preacher who sought to inspire his fellow enslaved individuals with a message of hope and liberation.
