The Senators, both Senate Armed Services Committee members, emphasized the urgency of modernizing defense mechanisms to protect the homeland.
In a joint statement, they outlined the necessity of adapting the United States’ missile defense strategy, which historically focused on managing risks from rogue states and unintended launches.
“For decades, the primary focus of our missile defense strategy has been on dealing with ballistic missile threats from unpredictable nations or rare accidental launches. However, the landscape is changing rapidly,” Sullivan commented.
He highlighted the proliferation of hypersonic and cruise missiles as pressing threats that necessitate updating existing defenses.
The IRON DOME Act is designed to align with President Trump’s “Iron Dome for America” executive order.
