William Clark was born on August 1, 1770, in Caroline County, Virginia, into a prominent family with English and Scottish roots. He was the ninth of ten children in a large household led by his parents, John and Ann Rogers Clark. Growing up in a military family, Clark was influenced by the exploits of his five older brothers, who all participated in the American Revolutionary War. His brothers' military histories inspired him to join the U.S. Army at the age of 19, where he would eventually form a lasting friendship with Meriwether Lewis, setting the stage for his later contributions to American exploration.
