That's interesting. I have a friend who lives in a neighborhood where it's mandatory to maintain a lawn. You can get fined if you don't.

That is the norm in the US too. If yards are not taken care of, either the homeowners association or the city will find you.
It might change if more articles like that emerge. The reality is that wildlife needs cover. Nothing other than insect can life in a well maintain lawn. Get some brush going and small critters have a place to go.
