The question was presented for the Week 211: #Weekend-Engagement asking: "What mystery would you most like to solve or understand? Explain what and why."

I am not sure when it was, but I think it was when I was a youmg adult that I first became interested in the story of Amelia Earhart. I'm not obsessed with it or nothing, but it just tickles a curiosity itch to watch documentaries and read articles about her. Yeah, her disappearance in 1937 fascinates me, but so does her spirit.

The mystery of Amelia’s disappearance over the Pacific Ocean while trying to fly around the world is one of the greatest mysteries of the last century. This mystery surrounding her, and her navigator Fred Noonan's, disappearance has resulted in thousands of searches to be conducted, conspiracy theories to form, and speculation to abound. However, no factual answers have been found to this day.

What draws me to this mystery seems to be the historical importance, but also the human side of the story. Earhart wasn't just a pilot who tried to fly around the world and disappeared. She was someone who pushed the limit and walked on the edge as a woman of her era.

This mystery has left many shaking their heads for decades now. Solving the mystery of Earhart's disappearance could provide some closure to her story. Yes, it is simple curiosity itch, but also the desire to gain some more knowledge of the past and of the human spirit.

Thanks for reading,
Joe

It amuses me how every few years someone will come forward and announce they've solved the mystery and know what happened to her, then give some crazy theory that everyone promptly ignores.

Yeah, I think sadly they died in the ocean after ditching the plane. But the castaway theory and never rescued is possible too I guess.

Two big theories are that she died a castaway or is at the bottom of ocean somewhere. I doubt we'll ever know for sure. Then there's the she was abducted by aliens crowd... She sure had a lot of courage and confidence to do what she attempted!

There is also a theory that gained some steam that they were recovered by the Japanese and held captive until they died.

You would have thought they would have kept records, but it was the middle of a losing war... Who knows?

Well it would have been before war with the U.S. she would have been taken. I can’t remember when they think she might have died. If I recall it is based of native testimony.

There's video online of her plane possibly taking off from one of her last flights. They posit that an important transmission wire snapped which made it very hard for her to communicate.

There is also the fascinating story of a teen girl Betty Klenck, who said she (and others) heard Earhart broadcasting calls for help over shortwave in the days after her dissapearance, but that they couldn't track her exact location in the vast South Pacific. Earhart said she was on a deserted island but didn't know which one.

I think it was her. Here's a link to an online newspaper report about her calls for help (she even said her name: "‘This is Amelia Earhart. Ship is on a reef south of the equator.’"), as well as a PDF link to a study showing her possible location at the time. PDF

No matter what happened to her, she's still a hero to me.

I've heard about those transmissions before. The article mentions remains being found, I think they eventually determined they weren't hers if I recall. It could be this remians a mystery for all time. I would hope not. Yes, she was something special.

As every tragedy is terrible, but she really was an admirable and courageous adventurer, perhaps part of the charm of her story is her disappearance and the doubt it leaves us about what else she would have done if she had managed to go around the world.

Agreed. She was a trailblazer for men and women.

I read the post but I want to ask you a question.
