Last century

The year 2000? Ah, I remember it well! I’d just bought a canal house in Amsterdam and was staying there for New Year with my beau of 5 years.

We were sleeping on a mezzanine floor accessed by a ladder. I was dreadfully unwell and, if you will pardon the sickening scene, I spewed up all over him, unable as I was to get down the ladder quickly enough.

He broke up with me a short time later. I’m not sure if the two events were connected. My heart was broken...for about two weeks until I realised the caddish bounder was misappropriating funds from my credit card to furnish a love nest for himself and my replacement.

This photo is tiny and sideways as he is a solicitor now

I was running a legal services business in Dublin when the whole Y2K bug madness was going on. We got numerous calls from clients enquiring as to whether we were Y2K compliant, to which we replied with a resounding “Of course." Always tell them what they want to hear!

In fact, we ignored the whole thing, assured by our IT support, a couple of young bucks in a new start-up, that our computers would be grand, that there’d be no meltdown and no chance of being transported back to that wonderful world pre-technology.

And New Year’s came and went. We all woke up with electricity. ATMs didn’t refuse to dispense cash. Planes remained in the air. We flew back to Dublin on New Years day. I could barely breathe. Next day I was diagnosed with pneumonia.

Posted in response to @galenkp's Weekend Experiences prompt asking Do you remember the year 2000 and the Y2K malarky? All that end of the world stuff was laughable right? Where were you and what were you doing on New Years Eve 1999, the day before the world as we knew it was supposed to end.

Sort:

Oh man that was a bad year for you!

I honestly don't remember it, I was young, no problems, no responsibility, so a normal year like all I guess, except that millennium bug should have killed the world according to "experts"

Yeah, never believe the experts or trust the science!:)

That was quite a remembrance saga!

I’m quite full of condolences for you, your century turn remembrance was more than a bit traumatic, but you absolutely killed me with the sideways photo of the philandering, money absconding former beau. Of course he became a lawyer😆

Hope this year is loads better!

!BBH

The gas thing was we were fellow law clerks and despised lawyers. Typical of him to go over to the dark side.

Ah, I don’t despise all lawyers, just horrible behaving dark side ones who take advantage of those who care for them, it’s a specific subset!

year 2000 im like 4 years old xD. I barely remember anything.

Meanwhile you bought a house! Now houses are so expensive, I know I will get one but probably not as cheap as in year 2000.

I can't recall exactly how much it was, but property was really cheap in Amsterdam at the time. I bought my first house in Dublin in the early 80s for just 30,000 pounds, 4 stories over basement. Unimaginable these days.

um can I buy at that price today? HAHA . well after calculating inflation according to chatgpt, that 30,000 pounds would be about $150,000 to $187,500 USD today. How much is the house worth now?

Ya real estate is crazy expensive and will keep going up I think as time goes at least based on history :c.

I sold it way back, just a few years after buying. It was sold again 2 years ago at 1.25 million euro!
I don't know how much higher property prices can go. They're already beyond almost everyone's reach.

1.25 million euros. instant millionaire just like that

Yea it's rough but better to get one as soon as possible before they go to impossible land lol

I was only 7 years old when the electricity went out in the whole city. We spent New Year's Eve with candles, canned food, and darkness, at least until the fireworks started. This now made me realize how quickly time flies. 😅😂

It flies indeed. One day you wake up, look in the mirror and see your granny looking back at you.

@deirdyweirdy, that lawyer's photo is too tiny, and sideways makes it look like I'm peering over a coffin! I honestly nearly broke my neck trying to see his face—haha! You did that on purpose, didn't you?

Oh well, I'll take it as an experience. I'm glad you can share this and make others laugh. But two weeks of heartbreak is too short, so surely you didn’t like him that much anyway. You’re better off without him. 😊💗

There are some who are so convoluted that they're best viewed sideways!;)

Haha! Absolutely. I love your posts to bits! You are a very good story teller. 😊🩷

Just mentioned you to my family, we currently eating out. As soon as they found out you're Irish , they are bugging me to ask Irish stew recipe from you! 😂

There's only one thing more hilarious than me and that's my cooking!;)

Sorry, hit the fucken downvote button instead of the upvote initially...rectified it with a 100% up though.

Happy weekend.

At least you didn't hit the upvote button and rectify it with 100% downvote:)

Haha...yeah. I pressed go and was like, oh fuck, that was a 100% downvote.

Oops.

Well that is one to remember. I was living in London at that time. Finding my way. studying and partying. I was at a house party I think, those weekends are all a bit blurry for me now.
What a right Gobshite that ex of yours is.
xxx

Remember? Sure I'll never forget! It's one of the only times in my life I've been really ill and definitely the only time I've ever thrown up on anyone. If it had to be someone, I'm sort of glad it was him:)

Sorry that this blog brought back that memory. I guess because of the break up you found out about the credit card - that is one good thing. Funny that - the small sideways - but not totally obscured photo.

I remember that time - I was not nervous at all. I actually travelled to England to celebrate with family knowing full well that some thought that the planes could grind to a standstill. I just thought I would deal with it if that happened.

Life went on like you said indeed. The only thing that change the following day was your diagnosis.

It was a long time ago and I can really only see the funny side of it now. It's these things that make life interesting, don't you think? if everything went smoothly there'd be nothing memorable at all.
Good to see you around.

I think I ignored all the news on that date, I thought: how silly!
I can hardly remember it if it wasn't for this weekend engagement ....By that time I was more worried about a boyfriend's rants and whining in the corners....

Luckily I didn't keep any of his pictures...I think so, maybe there are some out there, but they're not even worth it.

did you seriously throw up on him because of the stairs ?
That must have been horrible....

I keep photos of all my ex boyfriends and when I'm in bad mood I make little effigies and stick pins in them:) Yes, I seriously threw up all over him and the bed. No wonder he stole my cash:)

Well, I would break them or throw them in the trash... hahaha .... but your idea sounds great to me...😈😈😈😈
Maybe I still have time to get me some little dolls accompanied by some long and pointed pins...😂😂

caddish bounder?

Absolute Cunt more like!

You side stepped that feckless rogue luckily..

Ah Y2K jesus there's a blast from the past!! 🤣🤣

I met him on the street when I returned to Dublin about 10 years ago and ran towards him, my arms open for a hug. I'm the forgiving sort! He sidestepped me and scuttled off down the street like the coward he is.

Yep sounds about right. A prize prick!
