Weekend Moving

in Weekend Experiences3 years ago

We spent the weekend moving. Moving in I should say. It's been quite a journey. For those not following, we decided to move cross country (or half of it) last month. We moved over 2,000 miles from Colorado to NorthWest Vermont. Pretty far up North, about 20 miles from the Canada border.

Here's some pics of the empty moving boxes.
Have you ever moved long distance? Tell me about your stories.

Exciting times for us, We closed on our house in Colorado the Friday before last, had the movers come in, pack and load Sun/Mon, then started the drive at 21:15 hours Monday night. Traveling with three cats who are not used to travelling was "different". They didn't stop howling the first 3 1/2 hours we drove the first night. The next full 12 hour day of driving and the following days, they were much better, with only a few complaints.

So we then woke up at 04:00 am on Sat, and drove the last four hours to make our 8am closing on the house here in Vermont. We signed papers, then drove 30 minutes to the house to meet the movers at 09:00. All day unloading with the movers on Sat. then all day (14 hours) by ourselves to finish unpacking and moving all the last few piles that they just dumped in the garage because it either lost the markings, or just wasn't room to fit in the designated room until other things unpacked.

I thought we had done a good job cleaning out before the move, but turns out there were still some boxes of "stuff" that we just threw away or took to Goodwill. My wife apparently has a lot of stuff (lol).

Here's a couple pics of "some" of the boxes. We actually used plastic storage bins for the bulk of items, including at least a dozen for my wife's new embroidery business, and all my shooting accessories and ammo. So we are set for storage needs for awhile. Now just finding a place to put it all. We did downsize the house, this one being 1,500 square feet smaller than our last house. While it's well designed for usage, we are finding there is not much storage/closet space. At least not what we are used to. So it seems much will be going to the attic, or part of basement that is unfinished to shelves and storage boxes.

I did do a brief walk of a portion of land yesterday. Found some interesting stuff that I'll post later. Just a hint, the property includes over 30 apple trees, at least one blackberry bush, a garden that is full of pumpkins, tomatoes, squash, and other. I saw my first deer last night eating apples in the field, and some other animal I think maybe a little ground hog.

Enjoy!

Seems like all went well and judging from that picture it looks to be a lovely spot you've moved to. Vermont man, I've heard it's spectacular. All those boxes are going to make a good bonfire...Marshmallows and s'mores?

Have fun settling in Kris, I'll see you around the hive when you're done unpacking and all.

Yes, made it in. Still a lot of unpacking arranging and sorting to do. I haven't even gotten to unpack any of my sporting equipment yet. Probably won't get to that until next weekend. Definitely looks I'll have a good spot for some 150 yard targets, and looking forward to the outdoors and wildlife photos.

You're trying to make me jealous on purpose right? Lol.

Lol, yup. You'll really like the pics I took this am. Won't have time to post until later, but I'll tag you to make the green rise :)

I'll look out for it - Sorry for the late reply.

All my replies are way late recently! Posted just a few min ago. Watcha think, a William Tell shot on that Apple maybe lol?

G-dog heads over there now...

I never moved the house with that long-distance but I understand how difficult every time moving to somewhere. Anyways, the house looks nice and I love the greenery environment surrounding it. :))

Thanks, it was always a dream to live on a large plot of land with some space, and time to enjoy it in the time we have left!

Wow! I'm super impressed with your timeline... that's amazing!

Yes, I've moved long distance. In 2006, I uprooted after 25 years in Central Texas and moved to a small seaside town in Northwest Washington state. Much more leisurely move, though... in some ways.

ABF Freight dumped one of their "U-Pack" 20-foot shipping containers in our driveway in Texas; we took two weeks to pack all our stuff into it. Then a truck came and hauled the trailer to their Tacoma depot where it was "warehoused" for (up to) 60 days while we looked around in a pretty leisurely fashion. We arrived here on September 24th; found our house and were ready to move in November 8th... called ABF and they hauled our trailer out and parked it in our new driveway where we had a week to empty it. It was a lot of work, but pretty low stress, all in all... and about $6,000 cheaper than using movers.

Nice. We considered that route at first, especially since we ended up packing 80% of the items ourselves. We did have quite a few pieces of furniture, piano, and Custom Embroidery machine (which had to be crated) so we ended up need movers for the heavy lifting and special handling of those items anyway. Ended up not being much cost difference for us. I would have liked the more leisurely method, but both of us are a little compulsive about wanting to get the move-in and setup part over with and get settled. Just a portion of the garage and basement left, and it's only Wednesday (4 days in)!

You're there! Let the adventures begin! What a huge amount of work that was for both of you! My longest moves have been 125 miles or less.

Our last one was only 15 miles, and we pretty much moved ourselves except for the piano. This was Waaaayy different!

Dealing with movers can certainly be interesting!
I hope you start feeling moved in and comfortable very soon!

Congratulations @ksteem!! Wow..30 apple trees! I'm looking forward to hearing and seeing more! 💕

It's a dream paradise for me for sure.

Impressive! I now look specifically for storage! I found that the bigger the house, the less staoale.

Thanks, Kris! This aweso.t
