First and Ten

It was game night last night and with nachos in the belly and glasses of wine in hand, it was first a round of Hues and Cues, which was fun with eight people, and then onto Hitster, a music quiz game. We invited two couples who hadn't met earlier, but we have known each for a very long time, and it was fun just sitting around and shooting the breeze, keeping it casual. They are all interesting people in their own right, but all laid back and easy going too. Also, competitive.

I have never been very competitive.

I don't know why, but I think there are two main groups pf competitive people - those who compete for everything, and those that compete for what they really want. I know a few who are clearly in each category, and the ones that compete for everything, tend to win a lot, but have very little of what they actually want. They have gone for quantity of wins over quality of wins. Those who only compete for what they really want, tend to be very successful in a narrow sense, and pretty relaxed when it comes to other areas of life.

Which are you?

There are also those who aren't competitive at all, but I often get the sense that it is less that they don't care, and more that they care too much about what others think, or of their own failure, that they don't want to take the risk of losing. Choosing not to compete due to fear of loss, tends not to end up getting much of what is wanted either.

Next week is the Superbowl between the Philadelphia Eagles and the KC Chiefs, and I was watching a clip of Jordan Mailata, one of the few Australians in the NFL that aren't a kicker. He is an offensive tackle for Philly, and since the team I support is already out, I am just hoping he makes an impact on the game. Mailata was miked up for the game against Washington (my team) and listening to him trash talk and just chuckle and giggle like a kid the whole game, was uplifting. He genuinely enjoys what he is doing, and he does it well.

I don't think I have ever sounded as happy as that guy.

It is the sound of joy of someone who is competing for something they really want, at the highest level. The pressure is high, it is incredibly physical, the crowds are screaming for and against - and that competitive spirit welcomes it.

I'd like to feel that.

But, I am not really interested in anything enough to want to compete at it in any meaningful way. I am not even interested enough to passively support a team or topic. I don't know why I am so not interested, because so many of my friends seem to always have something that they are into, even if it changes relatively regularly. It is like most people are geared to find something to be a fan of, no matter what it is. Maybe it is because it creates some sense of belonging and meaning?

I think being a "fan" of something helps set up some of that useful competitive spirit, because it creates a position to defend, a position to fight for, something to argue over. It doesn't really matter the subject matter, it creates the conditions of for and against.

It was fun during the music game, as people were getting into it, and there was nostalgia with many songs, and the frustrations of them being familiar, but not being able to grasp the artist, or just missing the title. When playing games like we were last night, I have to feign competitiveness, because it makes the game more interesting for those who are looking to win. For me, it is about creating an atmosphere that is enjoyable, especially since I was hosting.

I don't follow the NFL during the season, but I sometimes watch the Superbowl if it fits in with my schedule, but I don't think it is going to be available in Finland this year, though I will ask around in case I have missed something. I am definitely not going to get another streaming service for it though, and I only have one friend who has access and would be keen to watch, and he is travelling at that time.

I will catch a replay, or the highlights.

Even consumerism is a sport to compete at these days.
I don't need to be first.

I honestly could not care who wins, nor do I watch sports in general.

But I now live in Buffalo Bills territory. When I asked others at the bar I was at last night if the Bills had won the game the previous weekend, I was ridiculed! Berated! Publicly excoriated!

I think being a "fan" of something helps set up some of that useful competitive spirit,

Being a fan of something means caring about that thing. I can certainly see how caring would bolster competitiveness.

it creates a position to defend, a position to fight for, something to argue over

This statement shows me the difference between being a mere fan, and a devotee of a higher order. Fandom is easy to rate on a number line, a spectrum. Other issues, those that go beyone mere fandom, are more complex.

I don't need to be first.

In anything, or just consumerism.

I was ridiculed! Berated! Publicly excoriated!

:D :D

Other issues, those that go beyone mere fandom, are more complex.

I think politics is a spectator sport now, where people choose teams, even if they don't know much about the game, how to play, the rules, or what the objective is.

In anything, or just consumerism.

In anything really. I am trying to think of something where I strive to be first. Might think and get back to you on it.

Oh gosh yes definitely politics. No complexities at all for the fans of that slave system. Good example. Now if you step out of being a fan of one team or the other, the issues become highly complex. The only thing I ever know for sure is that any entity of mainstream information sources is not telling the full truth, or even the half of it.

But back to you, is that blassee-ness since the stroke, or have you always been that way? You can't ever remember being a true fan of something? Nothing comes to my mind for this either, actually. And as far as I know, I have never had a stroke.

Hopefully it isn't going to be much of a game and Philly runs away with it. We will see though. I probably won't watch the whole thing. I usually don't. I only would have if the Lions were in it. I'm glad you had fun playing the games and that everyone gel'ed well.

I only would have if the Lions were in it.

So, you will likely never watch a full game again? ;D

Haha, touche'

I'm not particularly inclined towards any game, but my brother Jhonny, he is capable of spending hours and hours in front of the console when he is free. As for sports, I've always been attracted to gymnastics and chess. At my age, only chess.

Do you find it strange that adults game so much these days?

I'm in the category of those who compete only for what they need. Though I must say that's almost like competing for everything because there's a lot I need in life. I don't always win in each competition but I never fail to learn important lessons from each experience. It beats me to think that there are people in life who don't want to compete for anything at all. What are they living for then? What gives their life purpose?

I don't always win in each competition but I never fail to learn important lessons from each experience.

This is a type of win, right? There are many who don't win, nor learn anything. It is a double failure.

What are they living for then? What gives their life purpose?

This is my question for myself :)

I love to play, but now it's mostly games for money. And I haven’t watched hockey and football on TV for a very long time. It became uninteresting to me.

It became uninteresting to me.

What changed?

I began to spend my time on myself, and not on other people's games.

Maybe this is why I didn't get into it much, other than the big events. every few years.

Some people really want to be competitive in everything. It is not possible to be competitive in everything. It is against human nature. It is difficult to be talented in everything. This is partly due to selfishness.

I wonder if there is a meta analysis that compares competitive people and their levels of skill?

In competition, I like the type that fights until the end. He doesn’t like to lose first before he wants to win. For example, I didn’t like Manchester City’s performance today, not because of the defeat, but because of the surrender.

I'm Australian, so the play til the end is the culture.

Ya I remember watching Adelaide united vs Macarthur win they grab the victory in last 10 minutes from 1-0 to 2-1

I am naturally very competitive. But I don't think that I compete for everything. I think that I tend to pick my battles, but if I get into competition I usually go to the end.

He is an offensive tackle for Philly, and since the team I support is already out

My favorite basketball team still has a slim chance to get in playoffs or at least playin. But they have to play much better than they did recently. This week they will play two games that are pretty much vital. Last game one enemy player scored 8 three pointers. That was insane. Also they have a habit of only playing one half of the game. Which I really don't understand. At times it seems that even if I would replace some player the result would be basically the same. At times it takes a lot of nerves to be a sports fan...but when they play great it is a lot of fun.

Well, if I had to characterize myself about the competitiveness,I think that I'm the type that I'm not competitive in all life "fields"... And even on the ones that I'm or that I try to be, I tend to not express it a lot, to be under the radar...

There are also those who aren't competitive at all, but I often get the sense that it is less that they don't care, and more that they care too much about what others think, or of their own failure, that they don't want to take the risk of losing. Choosing not to compete due to fear of loss, tends not to end up getting much of what is wanted either.

Sorry to disappoint but I am very non-competitive and legitimately do not care in the slightest XD

I don't know if that's a brain glitch as I also do not care in the slightest about a number of things other people almost literally scream at me that I absolutely have to care about because they're terribly important, and I just...don't

It does make having a comp class an interesting experience because I talk it up like it's a lot of fun for the kids (because it's a competition they get nervous and I'm like well I can't even care any less let's just go show off and have fun and bonus if you get a medal ay, the only thing I care about is that they're good enough to pass their badge if that's what I put them in for).

The downside was losing interest in games I previously loved (beat em ups, most board and card games of which we have a fun collection of, I only play tabletop rpg and Minecraft now).

Glad you enjoyed your game night (at least it sounds like you did) even if you had to pretend to be super competitive XD

I have been competitive as I had to. A good sample for it is that children in my country find themselves in an exam competition from early ages till university. They have to because about 2 million student take the university entrance exam every year.

Sounds like u had a blast! :) old friends and also new.. so great! 👊😉😎👌
