Secret gift of pain

in The Ink Well15 days ago

I have always thought that I am a perfect wife for my husband. I never expected the gift that he gave to me.

It was on a Sunday morning, I woke up as usual, preparing for Sunday service after I had finished bathing the kids and cooking lunch. Sunday services usually close late and there is no time to prepare for lunch after all the dancing and jumping and series of meetings after church.

So I prepared lunch ahead of time and went in to wake my husband from bed. He opened his eyes and told me that we were not going to church today and that he had a secret gift for me. Nkechi told her friend Chidera, weeping.

But if it's a gift, why are you crying chidera asked, looking confused.

My friend, you see this kind of gift, don't pray for it to ever come your way Nkechi says, wiping her nose with the back of her hand.

It's that bad. Did he marry another wife, or did he impregnate someone else? Chidera became more curious as to why Nkechi would weep like this and stay away from her house for three days now.

Okay, can you stop weeping and tell me the whole story, chidera said after she must have consoled Nkechi.

Nkechi wipe her tear and continue, when he said that he had a gift, that we should stay back, so we all could receive it. This was our conversation.

Honey, what kind of gift do you have that can't wait till after service I asked him but he just smiled and said

Please prepare jollof rice and fry the chicken I bought and use some and make pepper soup that what he said and turn to sleep.

I wanted to push further but seeing that he wasn't ready to talk, I
just walk away Nkechi shakes her head.

He came down and asked me if I had prepared everything he asked me to prepare, I said yes. He dressed up, picked up his car keys, and drove off without telling me where he was heading; well, I assumed he was heading to pick up the gift.

About 1 hour later, he came back with his sister, his brother, and some of the elders in the family. I was somehow surprised and I welcomed them and asked them to feel at home.

I followed him into the room; I was smiling; so this is the secret gift that you said you had for me. He said no, some people are still coming.

Honey, how many more people are we expecting, Nkechi asked.

Just three more people Mr. Philemon, nkechi's husband said dismissively

Okay, can you just tell me who the remaining people are Nkechi asked?

Patience, you will meet them soon; can I be left alone now, Mr. Philemon said, obviously irritated.

Nkechi left and went back to entertain the guest.

30 minutes later, Mr Philemon came down again and left. At this point, Nkechi was beginning to worry about her husband.

A few minutes later, her husband came in with a lady and two kids. Her husband asked them to sit down, then turned and told Nkechi to set the table for lunch.

After they finished having lunch, everybody went to the living room.

Then Mr Philemon cleared his throat and broke the silence

Nkechi, what I'm about to say is the gift I told you that I have for you, don't feel bad.

Nkechi was looking at everybody confused but kept mute. She said a word of prayer in her heart, let it not be what am thinking.

The lady sitting down here, and these two children are my first wife and kids.

Nkechi burst out laughing; hHoney, if this is a joke, please stop it; it's too expensive,; you would have told me that you wanted to prank me, not a gift. Please tell me who they are. NKechi was laughing seriously, thinking it was a joke.

Mr Philemon continues. Like I said before, she is my first wife, and these are my kids. Nkechi looked at her husband's face to see if it was a joke. She just kept quiet.

Philemon continues talking,; You know I married you because of my mother, now that she is dead. I have gone to marry the woman after my heart. I just wanted to let you know because they will be staying here from now onward.

Nkechi shouted impossible, I will never allow this...

Philemon sister cut her off; you better accept it cause you know he never wanted to marry you, and he has never treated you bad, so allow the woman to stay.

Nkechi could feel a sharp pain in her chest, she just said I need to clear my head; and that's how I drove off to your house.

My dear friend that's my story, nkechi says bitterly

But Nkechi, did you know that your husband never liked you? Chidera questioned.

Yes but he has never treated me badly and have always taken care of my needs, I thought his now in love with me nkechi answered

Hmmm, chimera, breathe out. If I may ask how old are the kids

The boy is 23 years old, and the girl is 21, nkechi says, tears welling up in her eyes again.

Nawoo, my darling friend the only advice I have for you now is that you should go back to your husband's house, she is indeed his first wife, how old is your first child again, 12 years I guess Chidera enquired

Yes, nkechi replied.

Just forgive and go home, you already know what's up before time, what a secret gift, I don't want this type, God please chidera say raising her hands up.

Nkechi later went home and accepted her fate. They all leave in peace.

Hi @coolbabe88. This is an interesting story. We'd like to provide some helpful feedback and some writing resources that we have available for you.

In this story, you start out writing in "first person" point of view. This means the narrator is telling the story. Then you switch to "third person" point of view. This means the story is told from the perspective of a character, as observed by the reader or a narrator.

Here's an example of "first person" point of view:

I was walking down the street one day when I saw a dog that looked lost and hungry."

Here's an example of "third person" point of view:

"Shelly was walking down the street one day when she saw a dog that looked lost and hungry."

When writing a story, the author must pick one point of view and write the story that way. If you mix them up, readers cannot follow the story. We don't understand who is telling the story. It is very confusing.

Another tip is to use quotation marks for all of your dialogue. As it is written, it's impossible for readers to know when the spoken statements begin and end. Here's an article in our catalog of fiction writing tips on how to write dialogue: How to write dialogue in fiction.

And the last tip is that all names should always be written with a capital letter. In your story you sometimes capitalize names and sometimes you don't. These are the kinds of quality details we look for when we curate stories.

We hope these tips are helpful.

What height of betrayal!
Well, the moral here is that we should always be bold enough to walk away when we know that the feelings we have aren't mutual.

It's but I blame her, too. Knowing that a man never wanted to marry you, you still went ahead, what do you expect

Another betrayal story!
But this one was actually her fault.

Serious, we don't take things serious at all. If not why settle for who clearly doesn't want you

Nkechi forgot she was getting married to Mr Philemon and not his mom. Now, the end has played differently from what she expected.

Nice story. I feel a little bit bad for Nkechi though.

Thank you for reading

The end was not what Nkechi expected but sometimes don't always go as planned..

Yes, she taught that her husband will love her still. Thank you for reading

This is why I don't get with a man I'm aware doesn't love me. Men will never compromise on their love and affection I hope women realise this sooner.

Seriously

Yeah it's annoying really
