This time both the husband and wife had convinced the children by making big promises that when they would go to the city on weekends, both the children would not insist on going with them,
but rather stay at home and do their studies or watch television without fighting each other.
Both the children agreed to stay at home on the assurance that their father would buy them things of their choice. Sylvia asked her father for a smartwatch and Bob asked for a video game that could be attached to the television.
On weekends, Richard and Julia left for the city in their car at 4 p.m. The distance from their home to the mall was about 30–35 km, and it took them about 30–40 minutes to reach, as there were several stops in between. The road at the place was bad and traffic jams were also found.
That day when both of them had left the house, the weather was very clear, but they were still on the way when suddenly dark clouds covered the sky and the clouds also started thundering, it seemed as if it was going to rain very heavily. Going back after reaching halfway was also impossible, so both of them kept moving forward. And after about 1 hour’s drive entered the mall. Right now it would take them about 2-3 hours to shop and they were not even knowing of the weather inside the mall. because everything was looking normal inside the mall due to the soundproof system fitted in the mall.
On the other hand, both the children were alone at home and only about 20 minutes after their parents left, due to severe weather, the power supply in that area was disrupted due to a storm and heavy rain and only one room bulb was lit on because it was connected to the inverter.
The lights of the rest of the house and the outer part had disappeared, and the atmosphere outside had become very scary due to strong winds blowing and thundering clouds. Both the kids had never stayed home alone before so they were very scared of the environment and feeling alone.
Both sat on the sofa in the same room and Bob closed all the windows and doors of the house from the inside. Just then lightning flashed from the sky in a loud voice and Sylvia saw a long black shadow hovering near the window, she was very scared and screamed out of her mouth.
Both the siblings sat close to each other and just kept staring at the outside window with their scared eyes. It was only a matter of time before a woman started crying loudly from outside, and someone was knocking very loudly at the window.
Both the children had lost their senses due to fear, and Sylvia started crying. Bob took out his mobile phone and called his father, but there was no full signal at that time, so the phone call could not be made. Bob was also very scared but due to taking care of his younger sister, he kept his behaviour a little balanced and he was doing his duty like his elder brother.
It was only 1 hour since their parents left, and 3-4 hours were left for them to come, both the children were not able to understand how to deal with this situation if someone breaks the door and enters the house and what will both of them do?
Then taking courage, Bob went to his room and picked up his cricket bat and kept it with him. The sister asked her outside brother will he kill us? the brother assured his sister that he should not be afraid, whoever comes in from outside, will kill him with this bat.
But inside he was also very scared and was just thinking that somehow this time should pass and nothing bad should happen. Because Bob was still a child and had no experience in handle with such a situation.
There was still someone crying from outside and there was continuous knocking on the window and door, now it was raining torrentially outside and the atmosphere had become even scarier than before. Both the brothers and sisters sat hugging each other and kept remembering their parents and God.
After about 1 hour, the rain stopped, and the sound of crying also stopped, the knocking on the doors and windows also stopped, but there was electricity yet not come back.
The fear of both the children subsided a bit, the sister had fallen asleep while sitting there, and the brother put her to sleep in his lap. By sitting in the same state for 4-5 hours, the brother passed the time with some courage and then when he heard the horn of his father's car, he felt as if he had taken birth again.
Hearing his father's voice at the door, he opened the door and hugged his father tightly and started crying. His mother also hugged him lovingly. Then coming inside, Bob told his whole story.
Both the parents vowed to each other that from now on they will never leave the children alone at home.
When the father came out and checked, he saw that three small kittens were sitting outside in a corner, probably they were born within a few hours back.
Every country and culture has a different idea surrounding the age that children are ready to be left unattended. Regardless of the age that is selected, many of us have a scare when we are alone for the first time. It is very fortunate that Slyvia had Bob to make her feel protected, even if he was secretly afraid himself. Although the kittens explain the crying, we are left wondering who was banging on the windows and door. Perhaps they truly were in danger! How chilling.
Thank you for sharing your story with us, and for your engagement with other members of the community.
@theinkwell All this was written to create some suspense. And sorry to say, in our country children are tempted to leave them alone at home, and their mental state is just like that.
Thank you so much for appreciating my story in such a beautiful way.
Intense experience for Bob and Sylvia! Great to hear that they will never leave the kids alone again.
@kedi Thank you very much for your nice comment.
Very good story. It has a lot of suspense with children alone in houses, in a storm and no light. I loved Bob's bravery. The ending surprised me with the kittens crying, poor things. The person who was banging on the door wanted to help them or wasn't it ?
You left me with a question mark😏

@popurri Perhaps my simple genre is not understood by many readers in other countries, obviously, when I write about the kittens at the end, it should be understood that there was no one at the windows and doors.
In the horror of that night, the cat itself was crying out of labour pain and wanted to come inside the house and was clawing at the doors and windows, it was only her cries that the children assumed like a woman's voice.
thanks for reading and commenting,
Your friend.
Bob was brave in all the circumstances he was able, the ending part was well written and touching, thanks for posting hope to read more of your story..
