Mrs. Smith bowed her head while resting on her office table filled with lots of unattended files, she was deeply lost in thought.
She had her eyes fixed on the floor like there was something there and she was still for several minutes.
Knock knock, the door opens.
"Madam! Madam!! Dr. Smith, is anything the problem?"
The nurse stood in front of Dr. Smith, she didn't understand why she wasn't responding. She eventually touched the doctor and she reacted like someone that was electrocuted.
"Hey nurse, what's going on?" Dr. Smith adjusted her glass and she looked around. It was certain that she had lost connection with her environment, she left the spot and sank into her office chair as she sighed heavily.
"I am sorry, I have been feeling very tired lately. I think it is time to go for my annual leave". Dr. Smith smiled as she tried to hide the sadness on her face with an excuse.
The nurse was surprised because she hasn't seen Dr. Smith in such a mood before, she used to be a very lovely and jovial person at work. She is hard working and a lot of patients feel happy when she is the doctor assigned to them.
The nurse replied, "You are due for it ma, it's been 14 months since you took your last leave".
She continued "By the way, Her Excellency is here and she will like to see you. She said she has been calling for some minutes but you aren't picking up".
Dr. Smith checked her phone and was surprised to 16 missed calls. She got out of her chair quickly and went to meet with the minister's wife who was waiting patiently in the reception.
Mrs. Akande stood up and went to hug Dr. Smith as she was approaching her. She held the doctor's hand after the hug and told her she has good news.
They both left for the doctor's office and Mrs. Akande broke the news in the hallway a few steps away from the reception.
"Doctor, I am pregnant" Mrs. Akande broke the news with excitement.
Dr. Smith was stunned for a sec before responding, "wow, that's big news. Congratulations Mr. Akande and you could have just dropped me a message instead of stressing yourself down here".
"I couldn't wait to tell you myself, my husband told me to give you this cheque as a gift for everything you did for us". Mrs. Akande stretched her hand out to give Dr. Smith the cheque but she rejected it.
"I am only doing my job as a staff of this hospital, I am very happy for you ma. You should start your antenatal as soon as possible".
Dr. Smith got back to her office alone, and the minister's wife left immediately after breaking the news about the pregnancy.
She switched on her laptop immediately she got to her desk and sent her leave request to the management which was granted a few hours later.
Dr. Smith left the office earlier than usual, she wasn't happy going on leave because she loved her job but she was somehow losing her mind, and taking some time off should help her get better.
She made a great meal that evening but couldn't eat due to loss of appetite. She was drowned in thought and she could only see the bottle of Hennessey she was sipping from.
Mr. Smith drove in from work and was surprised to see his wife's car.
He was happy and rushed in screaming "honey! honey!!" from the door but he wasn't getting any response. The aroma from the kitchen got his attitude, he rushed in there but didn't find his wife.
He went to the room and found her in tears drinking alcohol. Dr. Smith's mind was too far away that didn't know when he got to her side, he collected the bottle and knelt in front of her.
She turned her face to the other side of the room as she wept bitterly. Mr. Smith sat by her side and patted her, "everything will be fine dear, I promise".
He tried to hug her but she blocked him and stood up from the bed. She went to the wall to get one of their wedding frames and she started pouring out her mind as she was pacing around the room.
"Do you remember that night?"
She asked and he nodded signifying yes.
She continued, "we joked about having three kids, we even listed their names on the wedding night 14 years ago but here we are today without even a child".
Mr. Smith moved closer to her, he tried comforting her but it would take more than the usual words to do so.
"I am down, I ran out of faith and I am feeling exhausted already. As a fertility specialist, people walk into my office with problems and they bring testimonies after a few months but it is not the same for me".
" I have consulted other experts in the field both at home and abroad but still no good news. It looks like I am cursed, you should just get yourself another wife as your family suggested".
Mr. Smith could feel tears running down his face already but his hands were too weak to wipe them.
"It is nobody's fault, we are both clean so let's just keep hoping on God" he managed to say a few words before wiping his tears.
The couples hugged each other and lay on the bed, Dr. Smith told her husband about the leave, and he decided to request his leave as well so that they can go on one of their dream vacations.
They set out of the country after a week of preparation, it was supposed to be a month's vacation but something happened.
They got to the Island and settled in well, the vacation wasn't just for the leave but also their 15th wedding anniversary. Mr. Smith made sure his wife had a great time, he didn't give her the space to be sad, and everything went well.
It was a memorable experience for the couple, they forgot all their problems for that month, and a day to the end of the vacation, Dr. Smith felt feverish while packing.
The fever got bad before evening and they had to visit the hospital.
Several tests were carried out and all results came out fine, the doctor was about to prescribe some drugs when he asked if she was pregnant.
Mr. Smith was quick to answer, he sounded certain that she wasn't pregnant. The doctor requested they check to be sure because of the drugs he wanted to prescribe to Dr. Smith and the result came as a shock.
Dr. Smith was two months pregnant, she didn't believe her ears and all she could ask was how? because she menstruated in the previous month.
She knew it was possible to menstruate in the first month of pregnancy but she wasn't thinking of such.
Dr. Smith was admitted to the hospital which caused a delay in their return to the country, a new chapter of life was opened for the couple as they welcomed their twins 6 months after.
What good news for the Smith family, I love these kinds of stories @george-dee! 😊
Thanks a lot, I glad you love it.
😊
It's a good thing that the family began a new chapter of their live with good news of welcoming their twins. I love the way you resolution of the story. Amazing story indeed.
The twin did change the story because they brought happiness back to the Smith family, barrenness for a long while will definitely shake the family but the couples standing by one another just like the couple in the story can help them overcome challenge.
That's was a great story.
wow, what a happy ending, after along time of waiting, God finally answered gave them a baby, that's lovely.
I always enjoy your story anytime I read it , like this is so interesting....
Thanks buddy, I am glad that their prayers were answered. African in-laws can be very annoying when there is a delay in childbearing, the wife takes most of the hits.
that's just the reality, and it shouldn't be so.
That's right, it shouldn't be so but the world is just so messed up.
Two bundles of joy to help ease the exhaustion of 15 long years.
Your story is filled with hope and happiness.
That's true, 15 years Is not a joke but I have believed that there is a reason for every day we face in life.
Indeed.
Wow! Dr smith and her husband laughed at last. Interesting story
It was a happy ending for the couple, 15 years of bareness must have finished at the birth of the twin.
it turns out that Dr. Smith could not predict her own pregnancy. He's a doctor though. it's a great story and very well written.
Life can be very funny, imagine her not being able to solve her problem while she is helping people with theirs. I am glad she was happy in the end else it would have made her lose interest in her job because of lack of concentration
You really do show exhaustion and depression in this story. Your character portrayal is definite, but not over the top. The resolution is realistic. It is satisfying, not only because we are happy for the doctor, but also because we find it believable.
Great use of the prompt and skill target.

Even as a fertility expert Dr Smith couldn't predict her pregnancy. I am happy to see how you resolved the conflict.
Her infertility was natural, nothing was caused so there was nothing she could do about it. I am happy it ended well for them.
Quite an interesting story dear friend.
It is great to see people behaving miraculous new beginnings.
It was really worth the wait.
Thanks for sharing this with us dear friend.
The joy came in a bundle for the family.
