Smell of wood

English

Carolina was a housewife, Martin her husband got up very early, before the rays of the sun came out he would go to sell vegetables. They lived in a very humble house, which had two rooms, a bathroom and a small living room, the walls were made of concrete and the floor was rustic. There Antonio was born, the second of two brothers, he was a vigorous boy, with brown skin, almost no hair, he was the joy of the house especially for his brother Alejandro, who was alone and needed a little brother to play with. One sunny morning, Antonio, already three years old, was playing with his older brother at the carts, suddenly Alejandro realized that his little brother had fallen asleep sitting down, he called him and the boy did not answer, he noticed that it was not normal. So he went to the kitchen and told his mother the situation. His mother hurried her walk, went to the bedroom, took her diaper bag and the house keys, with one hand she grabbed Antonio and with the other she took Alejandro by the hand. She locked the house with the keys and ran to the hospital. Tired and exhausted from the road, she arrived at the pediatric emergency room. The child was immediately diagnosed with a convulsive event that resulted in a language delay and a motor disability. Among the medications assigned to the child, they suggested Carolina to take him to occupational and speech therapy. On their way home they meet Martin, Carolina desperately tells her husband everything that had happened. He stroked his wife's hair and took her and the children home. While Antonio was sleeping, Alejandro was playing with his cars, Carolina was cooking dinner, Martin approached her from behind and whispered in her ear: "I must get another job to pay for Antonio's therapies." Carolina turns around and hugs him around the waist and replies: " How are you going to do that? you work so much, how long are you going to rest and what are you going to work on?" He placing his hands on his head tells her: " I am going to talk to Mr. Frances the owner of the carpentry shop to see if there is a possibility to work with him". Carolina, taking him by the hands, replies: "Trust in God that everything will be all right". The next morning Martin went out very early as usual to sell his vegetables. When he arrived at his work station he realized that Mr. Frances was walking towards him, and he said, rubbing his big belly: "sell me a kilo of potatoes and onions." Martin saw the opportune moment while he was dispatching the order and says to him: "Mr. Frances, good morning, I'm glad you came this way. I need your help...". Mr. Frances, grabbing his beard asked him: " tell me how can I help you? Martin, a little nervous, said to him: "At the moment I have a health situation with my youngest son and I need you to give me a job in your carpentry shop, but only for half a day to be able to attend to this business". Mr. Frances thoughtfully replied: "Okay, but you start today from 2:00 pm". Martin, very excited, answered in the affirmative with his head, and when the noon hour arrived, he picked up his business. He arrived home and told Carolina what had happened. He had lunch and left for his new job. As the days went by, Mr. Frances saw how well Martin was doing. They were not able to provide therapy for the child because Martin was not paid much, since there were times when production was low and other times when it was high, but that was enough to bring in another income to the house. When the father arrived home tired Antonio would run to his father's arms, just to delight himself with the smell of wood that was impregnated in his father's clothes. From that moment on, Antonio would wait for his father at noon and then go with him to the carpentry shop. Among the smells of cedro and Scots pine Antonio did his chores and then delighted in making small wooden objects. In spite of his motor condition, he became the best student in his class. He always went to Mr. Frances' carpentry shop to do small wood works that he would later sell. For many years he saved a lot of money, when he came of age he bought tools and machinery, built a carpentry shop in his house to enjoy what he liked to do and to support his parents who were already old.

Olor a madera

Sort:

What a charming story, @lrscarmen. It was wonderful to read how the family came together to help Antonio, and how he was able to overcome his disability and thrive.

One tip: Be sure to break up your stories into paragraphs. It is very challenging to read when it is all one block of words without and breaks.

Hi, @theInkwell, thanks for your suggestions.

Hmmmmm! It is sad that Antonio was going through such health condition but one thing I love is the unity of the family. Antonio who was having some disabilities too had to work towards getting better and even supported his family in the end. Thank God for Mr Frances, he was a blessing in the family.

Wow, it's great to see how Martin's determination to provide for his family led to Antonio's success and independence. This shows the power of hard work and family support. Well done @lrscarmen.
