Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well Prompt #29

Source

Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction contest!

In this post, we'll announce the winners from last week's contest and provide the prompt for the coming week.

Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...

We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.

Important notes:

  • Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
  • We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
  • Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
  • Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
  • We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
  • Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

Honorable Mentions of the Week

@mineopoly
Celebrate Life

You are healthy but none of your swimmers swim straight. They just go any way they want to go. You really have one in one

@minhajulmredol
Eid ul-Fitr Celebration

So the day starts with getting ready with new clothes for going to the Eidgah, a place where everyone meets to say Eid prayers. Before going out, everyone would sit down and have some desserts; the day starts with something sweet, which most commonly includes shemai and ruti (bread).

@funshee
Parent's Sacrifice

My dad used to tell us that he would rather pause the project instead of not sending us to school and that our education is more important than his house project. He will say that education is the only legacy he knows he will leave us with. This alone is used to motivate us to strive and make them proud.

@amiegeoffrey
I celebrated my little wins. Learning a sign language

For every test I pass, I celebrated my little wins. I would write an appreciation letter to myself and remind myself why I started this journey in the first place, I would also share my success story with people who cared to listen even though they felt it was something too small to celebrate.

Third Place: Wins 2 Hive

Our third place winner is @Yuki-nee, with the story:

The Celebration to Remember

Source

Regardless of what happened to her, Mamang refused to blame God or anybody else and sought to live her life to the best of her ability. However, one cannot battle old age, and she became considerably weaker over time. This concerned us considerably, but Mamang remained as cheerful as usual.

Second Place: Wins 3 Hive

Our second place winner is @nancybriti1, with the story:

My father's last birthday

Source

The birthday was a roulette of emotions and feelings: joy, nostalgia, surprises, hope. We went from laughing to crying, from astonishment to triumph and the satisfaction that everything had turned out beautifully and my father was happy with his party.

First Place: Wins 5 Hive

Our first place winner is @Marilour, with the story:

Between threads weaving the tapestry

Source

My tired eyes avidly and greedily roamed the fascinating anatomy of my wristwatch. The cardinal purpose of impatiently visualizing the elongated, pointed pieces, which never ceased in their "Tick tock, tick tock" They desperately sought with impetus and frenzy, to accelerate the time, consuming the remaining minutes, so that my turn would come to an end, as a resident doctor.

This Week's Prompt #29:

Clean

A clean slate, a clean start or a clean house. Cleaning out the old and heralding in the new often creates milestones in life.

This week we ask you to use any of the following words: clean, cleans, cleared or cleaning to tell us a story about your life.

For this topic there are several possible approaches. For example:

  • Write about something that you experienced that cleared the cobwebs from your mind.
  • Perhaps you cleaned out a room and found a box full of old photos and papers that triggered memories from your youth.
  • For some people cleaning is a ritual that helps them focus and relax. Write about a situation where cleaning helped you overcome an obstacle.
  • Maybe you decide to break a bad habit. Tell us about the new you and how you plan to clean up your life.

Tell us about it!

Have fun and good luck! We look forward to reading your stories.
