Biden's Big Decision.

in Cent5 months ago

In a stunning turn of events, President Joe Biden has now decided not to run for president in 2024.

Bold as it may be, it's timely for the present condition. Biden framed his decision as one that protected democracy and passed the torch to a new generation. Noble as such a view may be, one cannot help but feel there's a lot more to this.

Surely, this was no easy call that Biden has made. He's been deliberating for weeks under increasing pressure from his own party. That speaks volumes to the Democrats' concerns regarding Biden's prospects for a second term. It's no secret that his age and stamina are already hot topics.

The president's Oval Office address was poignant and reflective on his love for the country, the honor to preside over it, and his identity. What struck me was his not mentioning Trump's name while contrasting himself with the possible opponent. That is smart, not letting this debate reduce to a personal level but bringing the bigger picture into focus.

Biden's nod puts Vice President Kamala Harris in the fray, completely changing the Democratic landscape. Harris has her work cut out. She has been campaigning hard, but the most recent polls show a contest between her and Trump as tight. It will be an uphill task, and I'm wondering how she can distance herself from Biden while riding on the administration's strong achievements.

The timing is impeccable.

With Biden testing positive for Covid-19 last week, this may have been a forced decision. It underlines how quickly the wind blows in politics and shows the importance of succession planning.

It is quite interesting how Biden is trying to carve out his legacy now. On his first term, he boasts of the achievements made by his administration and sets all sorts of ambitious targets for the rest of his tenure: reform in the Supreme Court at home and ending the Gaza conflict and his moonshot on cancer, the long list goes on and on.

I'm really wondering how much he could get done in this remaining time. 🤔

The general public appears evenly divided.

According to a CNN poll, most people are for the completion of Biden's term, though Democrats are torn about whether the next candidate should continue along the path charted by Biden or take the country in an altogether different way. This can be a challenge to Harris as she looks forward to unifying the party.

Trump's reaction to Biden's announcement was all too predictable. He called the speech "barely understandable" and Harris as a "radical liberal." Thus, it set out drop-dead what would prove to be a fiercely contested election season.

Biden was threatened by his people that if he didn't drop out of the race, he'd have a fat, ugly, nasty old witch changing his diapers for the rest of his time. he was so scared he'd rather drop out

😂😂😂 I bet this is exactly what happened
