How much privacy are you willing to sacrifice for security?

Privacy is incredibly important to me.

Over the years, I've brought the subject of privacy vs security up with friends, family, clients, etc.

The answer I usually get seems to be "well, if you're not doing anything wrong, then you have nothing to hide".

I completely disagree with this sentiment. I believe we should at least have the option to maintain a high level of privacy, no matter what. This also assumes that we accept any "risks to security" as a consequence of this.

As a community run on the blockchain, I feel like privacy is pretty important to many of you as well.

Which side do you stand on in this debate?

The common man has been giving the governments of the world since world war two more and more power in exchange for security and protection. I think this is dumb, and we all know how this will end.

I've been concerned lately with how people are demanding others to get locked up from only going outside, even mobs lynching. Its insane the mental weakness some people on our planet have, they are willing to create authoritarian governments out of fear.

This move into the collective consciousness has to end, and the individual has to become the base of society again.

I could not agree more. I feel like this discussion is especially hard to have with people 40 + - i.e., my parents, they don't really place any energy into their digital privacy and how they use the internet, and it's concerning at times.

I've been trying to get my parents to download Signal (encrypted messaging app) forever now with no luck haha...perhaps I should try getting them to use it in conjunction with their existing apps, instead of trying to force the complete replacement of them.

You're right. Many people feel more comfortable in the social networks as Hive based on blockchain than on the traditional ones because the blockchain provides the anonymity you deserve.

Hive on!

Most people have no clue about privacy and what it implies, espcially the importance of it. I think I would sacrifice a lot in order to feel more secure. Cheers bro.

After all the privacy invasions, still governments are asking for more

And I believe that they will continue to, increasingly so. It's rather unfortunate - and with a lot of people not even batting an eye at what's happening, governments will continue to gain more and more control.

Lots of people don’t want to be bothered

It's a fine line, a slippery slope.. 'perfect' security is probably a practical impossibility. The basis of objection to your above quoted statement, as I understand, is similar to arguments about human rights. Do we have universal protection of human rights in this world? Not even close yet it remains a standard ethical and moral imperative to strive for.
Yes, we should have privacy regardless of and unrelated to whether or not we have things we want to hide, however..
It seems a bit like the money game: i.e. that once you go down that road it's never going to be enough and the further you go the more frustrating will be the illusive end point.
Yogis and such mystics often renounce not only material possessions but privacy too. That is an extreme that I wouldn't advocate but it must he recognized that that is the direction where peace lies, not in the striving to achieve it.
Therefore like much else in life one needs enough privacy (high level, perhaps yes) and I would disagree with a cavalier attitude expressed in those you are happy with everything being out there because they fell unashamed (for whatever reason) about it.
