So I was remembering, while reading @simgirl's Advice for new Hivers posts, that there used to be a lot more contests.
I participated in many of them 😅
At the same time, it was generally acknowledged that contests were for 'new' users, a lot of contests were auto generated and boring, and even those with a bit more thought involved were fine for redfish to grow up a bit, but seemed a little tacky for users of a 'certain wallet size' to participate.
I'm an orca now 😮
I had run many contests as well over the crypto winter through my dolphinhood. But the problem with a contest is how to find a way that the contestants 'add value'. That's the only way this works. That's why @theycallmedan's call to action posts work so well, and he can reward with his upvote all those who do the call to action.
I think a lot about @papa-pepper's Selfie Contest, which changed our lives at the time and further solidified the importance of crypto in our lives. I think I might run a modified version of this, but next spring/summer. For now, its actual winter and I'm pretty busy.
I have a few simple ideas for the first several weeks - the general structure will be like this:
CONTEST STRUCTURE
Rules - Do what I tell you to do. Do it big and boldly!
Post comment on HIVE with proof that you did it.
Don't cheat.
All selection criteria are determined by me, @ecoinstant.
Prizes
For now I am offering my humble upvotes plus up to 10 HIVE SBI units for participating winners. HIVE SBI, you may remember, has been one of my secret sauce to vote success. Amount of HIVE SBI received may have something to do with how well you did what I told you to do.
This week's Task - Identify value adding tasks
This week the task is an essay contest. Not because I want your answers to be super long, please, be as short and succinct as you can. But I want to hear from you are good, fun and value-adding tasks that could be required in a contest in order to win a prize.
Possible criteria for tasks:
Improves some Key Performance Indicator
Has some level of skill
Easy to do, hard to master
Creates value for the HIVE blockchain
Creates value for @ecoinstant
I know this is a bit meta, but come on everyone, let's figure out the best ways to earn and grow together. The HIVE SBI earned on your account will continue to gather rshares to vote on your posts for the life of your account.
Since these are value-adding tasks, accounts of any size can feel free to participate.
Let the games begin!
One of the tasks you ask people to do should be to participate in Punday Monday!!! <3
And you should come by and participate, too!!!!
Punday Monday hasn't gone stale yet! This is great news!
Every week since the beginning! (I think. I may have missed a week some years ago. But I'm not sure)
It's so nice that I inspired you to do more contests! I did notice that @snook included tagging others in posts to continue the chain of posts. Do people still do that? Maybe a criteria would be to tag a # of newbs in the post, and then comment on the newbs post so they know where to find the contest :D
Rope 'em in! Interesting idea!
proof of delegation to white listed projects like @monstercurator and @leo.voter.
This incentives people to earn(at least temporarily) from projects that benefit the whole chain.
So here is an idea for a curation contest:
Start with a prompt topic, ideally of the elastic kind, which could be interpreted in various ways, such as Life finds a way or Caring for your best friend. Then have contestants search recent Hive posts (that can still receive votes) that could fit into this topic (somehow). Have them upvote and comment on that post, and link it into your contest, while explaining the reason why they picked that particular post. Not sure about how scoring and winners would be worked out, but it seems to me that by sharing content, you'd ultimately give their authors more exposure, creating overall value.
Hey buddy, it's great to see you putting even more thoughts, energy and resources into that direction. Have you noticed the Travel Contest I run at @travelcontest ?
The idea is simple - with each edition I give a different theme, then the rewards are in form of beneficiaries and HBI shares. Only few of them contests so far, less than a dozen editions, but I see a new group of active and thinking people is forming around this activity.
Of course, my idea is to turn this into something huge and attract more people on HIVE too with it.
I'm still thinking and changing/tuning it up, it's a big amount of time and the contest is not self-sustaining yet. Moreover, as HBIs are paid in Hive this currently is a bit harder too.
Sorry man, maybe it's just me, but I'm not completely sure about what you are telling us exactly. Do we have to make a comment, write an essay, or just come up with some ideas for adding value? Is there a deadline for this contest?
😅
Yes, you should leave a comment discussing an activity for a contest, and why its a good idea.
I hope to make it weekly, but the true deadline is 'before my next post about this topic'.
Oh, I see. This is not the actual contest yet, just a brainstorm for it. Okay, let me suggest an idea on the top of the thread.
it wasn't just you. I am his Mom and had no idea what he was asking for LOLL
THANK YOU for asking the question!!
Oh I'm glad to hear! :-) But it's okay, just demonstrates how much clarity a bit of communication can bring.
Exactly!!
I have two contests going right now.
My Hive Story
and create your monster challenge
The create your fairy challenge was a huge hit last week and 17 posts were made filling Hive with laughter. Check #snookschallenge1 tag for all the posts.
any challenge helps Hive and you and all of us because we stayed for the fun and interactiveness we found here. The more comfortable you are here the more you learn and write but we all need to start somewhere.
You are great!
@ecosaint
As we are approaching Christmas and some might be struggling then others. How about rewarding users who share their homemade or DIY gifts?
This is a great idea!
Contests on Hive are really cool! When I started I remember participating in some and they did help me to boost my engagement and to meet people! And you can win some prizes too and it's great!
It made me feel so good to participate that I came up with a contest of my own, a graffiti lettering contest where I give out a word and people have to draw it in the way they prefer, I let the participants and hive members vote and the vibes I am getting from the contest are awesome, so many happy people and so many great feedbacks that make me so happy! Feels so good when you can drop someone a prize, even if is small! :)
Not really On Topic about your task here but just wanted to share this with you after reading your post!
In my case, letting the people vote, I do not really have criteria to follow, but when I do vote I always give priority to this 4:
As I previously mention maybe I am a bit OT, not sure, but this are my insights :)
PS: I'm new on Hive and still at a noob-ish level 😅
I didn't post any link to my contest because I do not want this comment to look like I am shilling my contest but if anyone is interested can ask me a link in a comment :)
Peace!
link it!!
If you insist 😁 https://ecency.com/hive-184784/@trippymane/graffiti-lettering-contest-9-xmas
We're at the #9 edition currently, thanks a lot for your interest and you're welcome to participate if fancy 😎
I think that a HBI reward is the most awesome prize. When I first started Steemit, I entered several SBI contests. I didn't realize just how powerful those rewards were until returning after an extended break form Hive to realize that I had built up a decent amount of votes from HBI after the fork and continue to get votes from contests I won years ago!
I also hope to host a contest or two once I get reacclimated to the platform and all of the changes.
I am a wholehearted believer in the power of having an attitude of gratitude and I try to always be aware of how truly blessed I am. I think it helps with everything from self esteem to finding true contentment regardless of ebbs and flows of life. I'd love to see a contest that incorporated this a bit with a few other elements. Maybe something like a weekly contest that requires a post about one thing you are grateful for and as additional elements what you feel you are really good or successful at and finally one thing you feel that makes you truly unique. I attended a resiliency training that required this from every one each morning of the class and it is lifechanging how maintaining an attitude of gratitude can be.
Of course, if this is an idea that you don't act on, I'm probably going to steal it back! lolololol
Contests are great.
I remember when I first joined STEEM I participated in a weekly sandwich making contest that had good votes.
The more contests on HIVE the better.
